New Beginnings It s a new year already! My Grandparents were right time does go a lot faster when you get older. The new year brings lots of opportunities at New Hempstead Presbyterian Church. A daylong Session retreat is scheduled for January 28, at Stony Point Conference Center. The Annual Congregational Meeting is Sunday Feb 3. This is an opportunity to look back on the last year in gratitude to God for all God has done in, for, and through this congregation in the last year, and to look ahead to where God is leading us in 2006. An Inquirer s class (for folks new to our congregation and folks who want to learn more about Presbyterians and our Church in particular) will begin in early February. A confirmation class will meet throughout Lent. We will have an Ash Wednesday worship service in the sanctuary (at 8 PM) to begin our Lenten observances. In addition, I will be hosting a chick-flick Friday at the Manse on the evening of Friday, Feb. 3. Women and men who can cope with a woman-oriented movie are invited to attend for fun, fellowship, and probably some chocolate! (Film to be determined later). Of course, the Bible Study group continues to meet on Monday nights at 8 PM in the Colonial Room. Come and join us for lively discussions on the book of Genesis. Undoubtedly, there will be many more chances for deepening our faith and strengthening our relationship with God and one another in the coming year. I m looking forward to it, and I hope you are too. Blessings to you all, January / February 2006 Carriage Stone - 2 - Vol. 18, No. 1

Thanksgiving Baskets Once again, the Thanksgiving Basket project was a big success. There was a large turnout to assemble the baskets over ninety in all with plenty of fellowshipping as well. We can be sure that they made the Thanksgiving holiday brighter for the recipients. It is worth noting that when the church first began assembling these baskets, twentysome years ago, it was considered a success when about a dozen baskets were assembled. Through the continued dedication of the Deacons and the generosity of our church, the project has continued to grow and serve ever more families. Thank you for your support. Annual Meeting The annual meeting of the congregation will be held after Worship on Sunday, February 5, in the Sanctuary. Reports from all church committees and boards will be available for review prior to the meeting. Also, church finances for 2005 and the budget outlook for 2006 will be presented. All members are encouraged to attend. Bible Study Opportunities Is one of your New Year s resolutions to learn more of the Word of God? There are two weekly Bible Studies in the church: Sunday mornings, Ed Garcia teaches a Bible Study group at 9:30 AM in the Colonial Room. The curriculum used highlights important themes in the Bible. Monday evenings, the Pastor leads a Bible Study group at 8 PM in the Colonial Room. Presently, the group is studying the book of Genesis. Anyone is welcome to join any week. Chick Flick Friday Join Lori at The Manse for "Chick Flick Friday" February 3 at 7:30 PM. Both women and men are welcome for fellowship, fun, and a womanoriented film. Women s Breakfast The monthly women s breakfast will resume on Saturday, February 4 at 8:30 AM, weather permitting. We meet at the Rockland Diner; 29 Third Street; New City. The phone number there is 708 0191. Boy Scout Sunday Scouts and leaders from Boy Scout Troop 11 will help lead the service on Sunday, February 12. Our congregation has sponsored the troop since the 1920 s. January / February 2006 Carriage Stone - 3 - Vol. 18, No. 1

Per Capita: What is it? Why Should Our Church Pay it? From Mark Zacheis Our church is a member congregation of the Presbyterian Church (USA) and thus has a relationship with every other Presbyterian Church in the denomination, as well as the governing bodies: Presbytery, Synod and General Assembly. The name Presbyterian is from the Greek Presbyter, which refers to an Elder or Overseer in the church. Each church is a member of a Presbytery and sends two representatives one minister and one Elder to Presbytery meetings. These representatives have a voice and vote in the business of the Presbytery. Presbyteries are groups of churches, Synods are groups of Presbyteries and the General Assembly is the national group of Synods. Our Per Capita funds are split into three parts and used by the Hudson River Presbytery, the Synod of the Northeast, and General Assembly to pay their operational costs and the costs of their ongoing programs. Presbytery has expenses similar to our own church salaries, rent, utilities, office expenses and mission. Some of the work that our Presbytery does includes nurturing members preparing for ordination as ministers, guiding churches as they go through the mission study and pastor search process, providing advice on financial matters and hearing and deciding disciplinary or remedial cases. The Presbytery sponsors Christian Education workshops and retreats, organizes Youth Ministry conferences and opportunities, advocates for rural and migrant farm workers and offers camps and retreat and conference facilities at Holmes and Stony Point. Our church will be paying Per Capita this year in the amount of $19.77 per active church member, a total of about $2,000. Please consider including an additional gift of $19.77 for each active member of your family in the collection. Use the blue envelope in your box or mark your check Per Capita. Ash Wednesday The Ash Wednesday service will be at 8 PM on March 1. How Do You Want to be Remembered? Will Our Church be Part of Your Legacy? From Tim Maroney Perhaps you have been supporting New Hempstead Presbyterian Church through your weekly offering and outright gifts for many years. But have you considered putting the church in your estate plans to help ensure its future beyond your lifetime? Beginning in January, the Stewardship Committee will host a series of programs provided by financial experts to talk about planned giving. Planned giving entails thoughtfully selecting a way to make a charitable gift that is also favorable to you and your family. Many planned gifts are designated through a bequest or will, but there are many ways to make a planned gift that provide a tax benefit immediately for the donor. For example, you can purchase a life insurance policy that names New Hempstead Presbyterian Church as the beneficiary of the proceeds upon your death. During the life of the policy, the premium payments may be tax deductible. In such a case, the church receives a sizable gift from you in the future that comes at very little cost to you during your lifetime. Whether or not you decide to include NHPC in your estate plans, please plan to attend one of the planned giving sessions in 2006. You will find them informative and helpful. Guest Choir Director / Organist Kryste Andrews is our new guest Choir Director/ Organist. Colorado is Kryste s home state where she sang as a young girl with her musical family at church and social gatherings and later with choral groups in high school and college. Her church musician skills have allowed her to sing, play the organ and direct choirs for various New Jersey congregations for the last fifteen years. Kryste has a son, Edmond Johnsen, we lives in Colorado and attends Colorado State University as a Physics Major. on the chart to that effect and include your phone number and they will contact you.
