COLLINGSWOOD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH SERVICE FOR THE LORD S DAY September 225, 2013 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time ASSEMBLE IN GOD S NAME Silent Prayer When days come and fears prowl the shadows of our days, you whisper, 'Peace! Be still!' to our hammering hearts, so we know that you are always with us. We open our hearts to you, dearest Friend of life. Amen. Welcome and Announcements We welcome you in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ! Please sign the guest book in the narthex so we can send you a welcome packet. Gathering of Prayer Concerns and Joys Please raise your hand to share your joys or concerns to be included in the prayers of the people this day. You may also write your concern on the pink sheets and hand to the Pastor. Please mail a prayer card from the narthex to your loved one. (*Please stand for items marked with an asterisk.)

Call to Worship Leader: We gather in this place to worship our God: People: Calm Presence in our times of confusion, Comforter in our nights of struggle. Leader: We gather with fellow pilgrims, as we seek to follow Jesus: People: Brother to those swamped by fears, Friend to all overwhelmed by loss. Leader: We are brought together by the Spirit who lives in the depths of our souls: People: the Serenity who travels with us on this up-and-down journey we call life. *Hymn - Holy, Holy, Holy PH #138 *Prayer of Confession (unison) Leader: We let fears control us, we let doubt become the way of life for us. If we but look, we will see our lives, and our world, cradled in God's loving hands. Let us confess our lack of faith, even as we trust the One who has promised to listen to our words, as well as our hearts. Join me as we confess together, saying, All: Fears can be such giants in our lives, God of Grace. Each day, our fears, our doubts, our worries wash over us, until we come to believe that you do not care for us. There seems to be so much wrong in the world, we are convinced that there is nothing good we can do. The storms of sin and temptation batter at us, and we cower, unable to find the faith to withstand them. Silent prayers may be offered Forgive us. God of Hope. Remind us that if we but open our hearts, you will heal us. If we but listen to your words, we will hear peace and joy. If we but open our lives to you, we can go forth to serve our sisters and brothers, even as we have been served by our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

*Words of Assurance Leader: With calming words, with a peaceful Spirit, with overflowing love and hope, our God forgives us and fills us with faith. People: Our God affirms us for who we are - those whose brokenness is made whole, whose sin is forgiven, whose lives overflow with faith. Thanks be to God! Amen. Response - Kyrie STF #2275 Kyrie, Kyrie, eleison Kyrie, Kyrie, eleison Christe, Christe, eleison Christe, Christe, eleison Kyrie, Kyrie, eleison Kyrie, Kyrie, eleison *Sharing of the Peace Leader: The peace of Christ be with you. People: And also with you. PROCLAIM GOD S WORD Children s Sermon (Children should follow Mrs. Kolecki out after the Children s Sermon.) Anthem - We Have Gathered - by Stan Pethel Old Testament Lesson: Job 38:1-15 (p.474) Psalm 34:1-10 (responsive) Leader: I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth. People: My soul makes its boast in the Lord; let the humble hear and be glad. (continues on next page)

Leader: O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together. People: I sought the Lord, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears. Leader: Look to him, and be radiant; so your * faces shall never be ashamed. People: This poor soul cried, and was heard by the Lord, and was saved from every trouble. Leader: The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them. People: O taste and see that the Lord is good; happy are those who take refuge in him. Leader: O fear the Lord, you his holy ones, for those who fear him have no want. People: The young lions suffer want and hunger, but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing. *Hymn - In the Day of Need PH #169 Gospel Lesson: Mark 4:35-41 (p.914) Sermon: Living In Fear or Living In Faith? The Rev. Dr. Katherine G. Killebrew RESPONSE TO THE WORD *Affirmation of Faith - United Church of Christ We believe it is a matter of faith to stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves. We believe it is a matter of faith to recognize equally and love all members of God s human family whatever their race, creed, color, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, physical or mental capacity.

We believe God s creation is good, beautiful, and sacred and therefore to condemn any portion of God s creation is to condemn a portion of God. This is sin. We believe Jesus Christ came to us to free all people from sin and to make disciples- people willing to live Christ s discipline of love and justice for all. We believe The Holy Spirit is that power within us that gives us courage and stamina to face the truth and to live it, even to die for it, as Jesus did. We believe in the resurrection, the victory over death, the truth that is life for all in Jesus name. Glory be to the God, One in Three: Creator, Savior and Holy Power of Love. Amen Offering We who burn incense to the idols of our common life are called instead to offer sacrifices of self and the fruit of our labor on the altar of the one true God. Give thanks to God whose steadfast love endures forever. Give practical expression of your gratitude to the One who satisfies your hunger and thirst every day. Musical Offering - Come, Dearest Lord - Henry K. Oliver *Doxology - PH#592 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. *Prayer of Dedication

Prayers of the People Leader: The Lord be with you People: And also with you. Leader: Let us pray. Prayers of Praise, Thanksgiving, and Intercession... All: Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. GO IN GOD S NAME *Hymn How Firm a Foundation PH #361 (verse 1-3, 5) *Benediction *Choral Response *Postlude Go Forward and Serve! Be a part of God s work through CPC! Please join us in the Dining Room for coffee and fellowship time.
