FIRST CONGREGATIONAL UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST DOWNERS GROVE, IL THE PILGRIM Issue 8 September 2011 Sunday, September 11 Fall Festival ~ Chocolate Sunday II We are excited to begin another fall season with Sunday School and Spiritual Formation for all ages! We have plans for spiritual nurture with worship and music, education and mission, all beginning on Sunday, September 11, now known as Chocolate Sunday. We will gather for worship at 9:30 am, when we will also commemorate the 10th anniversary of the tragedy of September 11, 2001. The children will begin their Sunday School rotation model curriculum following the Conversation with the Children, with the theme Occupations in Bible Times. Following worship we will gather for a salad bar Church Garage Sale Saturday, September 24, 8:00 a.m. 3:00 p.m. It s time to round up all that extra stuff you have cluttering up your home! We will be happy to take your donations of household items, furniture, electronics, toys, games, sporting goods, baby items, books, music/ videos, tools, collectibles, holiday & craft items, etc. (No clothing, please and everything must be in good, working condition.) If you must have items stored until the week of the sale or need to have your items picked up, contact Gail Clark at 630-881-3362 or email gclark214@comcast.net. You may drop off donations on Tuesday, Sept. 20 from 1:00 to 8:00 pm, and on Wednesday and Thursday (Sept. 21 and 22) from 3:00 to 8:00 pm at the west entrance of the church, where volunteers will assist you at the curb. As always, we need many volunteers the week of the sale to help with receiving, pick-up, sorting, displaying, pricing, cashiering, bagging, security, and more. We will have sign-up sheets available in Fellowship Hall on Sundays beginning August 29. Please take a shift or two. It s a great fundraising and fellowship opportunity, with refreshments! Plus, if you volunteer, you can get first crack at all the bargains by shopping at the workers presale from 4:00-7:00 pm on Friday, Sept. 23! Our church members presale will take place afterward from 7:00-9:00 pm. (We will be following the practice of other churches in the area and there will be a 20% markup for all presales.) Finally, be sure to spread the word to your friends, neighbors, and co-workers about all the great bargains we will have on Saturday from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm! Thank You! P AGE 2 THE PILGRIM Worship in September I have always been fond of circles. From the earliest of time a circle has symbolized that which is without end, representing eternity. Having no beginning and no end, like time, the circle returns to itself, like life. The Circle is an unbroken line which has no beginning, no end and no direction and because of these attributes it represents a completeness which encompasses all space and time. In that sense the circle depicts Eternity and Divinity for it is also a symbol of perfection, completeness, wholeness and unity. In the circle, the beginning and the end are one. In every end is a new beginning, in every beginning an end, and the cycle continues. This cycle is always about saying goodbye and hello, always letting go and embracing and moving on. Therefore the circle is a wonderful symbol as we think of our interim time together which will come to an end perhaps this winter sometime. Yet the end of the interim will bring the beginning of settled ministry, the period will become a comma, the postlude the prelude. During the fall I will be preaching using the symbol of the circle. Revelations does speak of God as the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end in whom all life is held and all existence finds time and eternity. God is the all encompassing circle, infinity, in whom all ends and beginnings take their place. And life s journey is circular as in the context of eons and the universe every birth and every death runs into each other. So join us this fall and enjoy the circle of friendship of FCC! MISSION 25 years of Serving the Homeless at Our Church P AGE 5 October is the month First Congregational is responsible for food and volunteers for PADS Monday nights through Tuesday mornings. We have made some changes this year. One important change is all food must be ready to serve as there will be no cook on site. I have added two casserole nights for which I will provide the easy recipe and pan. I will need one person to be in charge of the 6:00-9:00 pm shift, and one person to be in charge of dishwashing. This is a time when you can make a homeless person s day better. You can sign up during coffee hour beginning September 11 or complete and turn in this form, or call Char Wild at 630-985-4416 or charwild@comast.net. I will do the shopping if you wish to just donate money. All volunteers must be 18 or older. P AGE 6 Adult Spiritual Formation Sunday, September 25 IL Social Security Offset Law for Seniors Illinois is one of only two states that still reduce unemployment payments to seniors just because they are old enough to receive Social Security. The offset law is age discrimination, pure and simple. Bills to repeal the Social Security offset law have been introduced in Illinois for ten years but were stymied by the Agreed Bill Process. For more details, see http://changeforsocialjustice.blogspot.com/. We need to repeal the Social Security offset law with HB 96 and SB 144 to get through the negotiations this time. They deserve to be heard at this period in time. The "Boomers" are retiring AND unexpectedly losing their jobs. We continue to create poverty among the working class in this country. Meets Wednesdays, beginning October 5 Join us for a viewing of the movie Fireproof starring Kirk Cameron to learn what it takes to never leave your partner in marriage when times get tough. Beginning on Wednesday, October 5 at 7:00 pm, we will begin our second marriage enrichment Bible study for this year. This eight session study course will focus on the 2008 movie Fireproof which is based on the book The Love Dare. Thanks, Jim & Jenni Hallman jjh93@comcast.net We Need an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) As we evaluate safety issues in our church, we find a real need for an AED device. Statistics show that more than 200,000 Americans die of sudden cardiac arrest every year. Up to 50,000 of these deaths could have been prevented if someone had initiated the Cardiac Chain of Survival, and an automated external defibrillator (AED) had been available for immediate use at the time of the emergency. As some of you know, we once had and AED, but unfortunately the manufacturer of that device went out of business and the device was not able to be serviced. A new AED from Philips, a leader in AED technology, will cost $1,200. Therefore, we are asking for donations to purchase a new AED. We are hoping to collect enough to be able to purchase the device this fall. If you feel you can support this effort, please send a check to the church office with AED noted in the memo line. The funeral service was held on August 13 at Modell funeral home in Darien. The Rev. Nayiri Karjian officiated. We keep Nancy s family in prayer and wish them God s comfort and peace. A special note of thanks to the kind generosity of our congregation! The Ministry of Christian Mission raised over $1,000 to help those devastated by the tornado disasters in Missouri and Alabama. We continue to be amazed by the unselfish giving of FCC in times of need. Through our Joplin Relief Emergency Cleanup Buckets program and our annual ice cream Sundaes on Sundays program, we were able to contribute $1,040 to Church World Service. Needed supplies will be sent to those stricken areas to help in the clean up efforts. A special thanks to Cathy Herman for organizing the Sundays on Sundaes program that was, once again, a big favorite! Thank You! One man gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty. A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed. I SSUE 8 Ministry Coordination Board Notes August 17, 2011 P AGE 9 Peggy Gutzke called the meeting to order and opened with check in and sharing. Visitor Linda Schranz discussed emergency preparedness planning for the church and purchase of an AED. CE and WASL are working together to update emergency procedures, including emergency evacuation, tornado cover and basic first aid. On October 23 rd a Safety Sunday is planned and on October 23 a fire drill. Building & Grounds Vince reporting replacement windows for the education building have been ordered. They should be installed in September. Three quotes have been received for the front stairs, also to happen in the fall. Christian Education Laurie Olsen Jan Barker is our Acting Director of Children s Ministries. She is excited and bringing a new energy. Sunday School will begin on September 11 with a Fall Festival and Chocolate Sunday II. A parent and teacher meeting is scheduled to discuss plans for the fall. A Confirmation orientation meeting is also scheduled. The youth position is still being discussed and interviews are taking place. Upcoming dates: Haunted house 10/28 & 29, Christmas Pageant 12/11. The youth need more outreach, service projects, retreats. Christian Mission Dan Swick $1040 was raised for Alabama relief from Mission Buckets and Sundaes on Sunday. The Guatemalan family will be moving into a less expensive apartment sponsored by the Bridge Communities. Plans for Crop Walk in the fall and Gay Pride Parade 2012 are underway. Christian Witness Steve Johnson still in need of additional members. Discussion followed about the positives and negatives of combining Christian Witness with Christian Mission since they complement one another. Working as a group would result in using resources more wisely. Spiritual Formation sessions are scheduled on unemployment and social security, about the federal budget with a focus on military spending, a display Family Shelter Service will be at FCC in the Fall. Replacement of the outside Peace Pole is in being discussed. Congregational Care Cathy Sanders Flu shots are scheduled for October 2 nd. School supplies for Walk-in-Ministry are coming in. Summer Sunday school youth have been making cards for the homebound which are well received. Endowment and Cabinet Vince Walsh-Rock looking at the moderator succession and considering a 3 year cycle with a vice moderator, moderator and past moderator positions in order to support and share wisdom. 5 previous moderators were consulted. Discussion followed. The search committee continues its demanding task. They deserve expressions of support and thanks. Evangelism Brett Johnson the 4 th of July parade was a great success and will be repeated. The 50 plus members recognition was also very well received and they are considering whether to repeat it and how often. They are considering moving the location of the name tags. Members are asked to use twitter.com to announce events. Family Life Pam Wiemerslage the 50 th anniversary celebration is scheduled for October 8 th. The program is down a few in number with 42 registered this year. Both the 3-year and all day kindergarten programs could use a few more children. Finance & Budget Larry Bryant Expenses are running as projected but income is behind. The current budget deficit is $40,000. Ideas were discussed to address this situation. The committee begins the budget process for 2012 this week. Lay delegate Brett Johnson he distributed a list of topics for the upcoming workshops during Fox Valley Association Fall meeting on September 24 th unfortunately the same day as the Church Garage sale. Personnel Peggy reporting Each member of the committee is a liaison with a staff member. Annual Evaluations are taking place. Job description for full time Minister of Music and Media is being formulated. WASL Bill Kundert they are looking at revision of the sanctuary sound system and are in discussion with Dana Kirkegaard. A proposal will be coming. Jim Molina and friends painted and carpeted the stairwell leading to the choir loft. Thoughts from Rev. Nayiri: Charmaine Schieler will be retiring from PADS this fall. A 3 people PADS team is formed: Bill Aldrich, Ranna LaVoir and Tom Williams. The stewardship committee will start work soon. Nayiri will be on vacation from 8/23 to 9/1. Jan Barker is on top of the set up for Sunday School. September 11 is Fall Festival also a remembrance of the 10 th year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Upcoming dates: 11/23 - joint Thanksgiving eve service with St. John s. 11/13 - Joint choir festival at the Methodist church, 12/24 3 services at 4:30, 7:30 and 11:00. Next MCB meeting will be September 14 th at 6:30 pm in room 503.
