SAINTS OF THE WEEK ST. PETER DAMIAN February 21, 2016 INTERNAL CONFLICT A man s main enemy is himself. Almost every culture and people in history have a saying that amounts to this idea. A man who is not free to act without being hindered by his desires will never really achieve anything great. As Christians, however, we are called to greatness. God has given us power to move mountains. To get there we have to be masters of ourselves. Joshua had a similar problem at Jericho. He was committed to an external struggle with the city. When the angel of the Lord came he told him how 3rd Sunday of Lent Pastoral associate job opening at Mother of God (Continued on page 2) 25585 Berg Road, Southfield, MI 48034 Tel: 248-356-0565 Fax: 248-356-5235 Hours: M-F 8am-4pm

KNOW YOUR FAITH (Continued from page 1) he could break the walls of Jericho. This story provides an interesting lesson. Israel, and namely Joshua, were a people who had conquered their demons by obedience to God. Joshua showed as much when he immediately fell down before the angel to pay him homage. Because that was the case he could even ask God to bring down the walls of the city of Jericho and it would be done for him. St. Paul has a very similar message in his letter to the Romans. He points out that the Spirit dwells in him but his flesh battles with the Spirit. He says he can want to do the good but his flesh wants something else. I do what I do not want to do and I don t do what I want to do. That is a powerful thought. As humans it is not enough to want to do something. We must actually do it. Many people who do horrible things never think of themselves as evil because they think they have good intentions or good desires. We evaluate ourselves by our intentions and others by their actions. If we wish to become saints we must subdue our desires. What is sanctifying grace? Sanctifying grace is God s gift to a person which allows them to enter into Heaven. No one enters heaven without sanctifying grace. It is also necessary to have sanctifying grace to enter into the spiritual life. Sanctify means to make holy and grace is a gift from God that is freely given. How do I receive sanctifying grace? God offers the gift freely through the sacraments. Sanctifying grace is first received at baptism. When we repent and confess our sins we receive sanctifying grace again if we have lost it. How do I lose sanctifying grace? It is important to remember that sanctifying grace is received by saying yes to God. Whether it is in baptism with our parents acting on our behalf or when we go to confession and repent. Mortal sins which are acts of rebellion against God kill off our sanctifying grace. These are sins such as murder, abortion, viewing pornography intentionally, slander, unwillingness to forgive, failing to attend Mass for a poor reason, theft, and others. These are acts which a person must go against what they know is right to perform. They are a rejection of God and kill off sanctifying grace. I thought Jesus died for us and all we need to do is believe! Jesus says Not everyone who says to me Lord, Lord will enter into heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father. James tell us You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone. These works are not good deeds but doing the will of the Father, which is to be baptized and to repent of our sins. Peter says Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. But I was baptized, does the Bible say I can lose my salvation? The bible mentions one sin specifically which is unforgivable, namely blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. Jesus does not say anyone who is baptized cannot commit this sin. Now what is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit? It is rejecting the gift of salvation by refusing to repent and turn to God. St. Paul believed he could lose his salvation. He wrote No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize. 2

PARISH SCHEDULE SCRIPTURE OF THE WEEK Blessed is anyone who endures temptation. Such a one has stood the test and will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him. No one, when tempted, should say, I am being tempted by God ; for God cannot be tempted by evil and he himself tempts no one. But one is tempted by one s own desire, being lured and enticed by it; then, when that desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin, and that sin, when it is fully grown, gives birth to death. Do not be deceived, my beloved. PRAYER OF THE WEEK James 1:12-16 O Christ Jesus, when all is darkness and we feel our weakness and helplessness, give us the sense of Your presence, Your love, and Your strength. THE CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH 946 After confessing "the holy catholic Church," the Apostles' Creed adds "the communion of saints." In a certain sense this article is a further explanation of the preceding: "What is the Church if not the assembly of all the saints?" The communion of saints is the Church. 947 "Since all the faithful form one body, the good of each is communicated to the others.... We must therefore believe that there exists a communion of goods in the Church. But the most important member is Christ, since he is the head.... Therefore, the riches of Christ are communicated to all the members, through the sacraments." "As this Church is governed by one and the same Spirit, all the goods she has received necessarily become a common fund." 948 The term "communion of saints" therefore has two closely linked meanings: communion in holy things (sancta)" and "among holy persons (sancti)." Sancta sanctis! ("God's holy gifts for God's holy people") is proclaimed by the celebrant in most Eastern liturgies during the elevation of the holy Gifts before the distribution of communion. The faithful (sancti) are fed by Christ's holy body and blood (sancta) to grow in the communion of the Holy Spirit (koinonia) and to communicate it to the world. I. COMMUNION IN SPIRITUAL GOODS 949 In the primitive community of Jerusalem, the disciples "devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of the bread and the prayers." Communion in the faith. The faith of the faithful is the faith of the Church, received from the apostles. Faith is a treasure of life which is enriched b y being shared. 950 Communion of the sacraments. "The fruit of all the sacraments belongs to all the faithful. All the sacraments are sacred links uniting the faithful with one another and binding them to Jesus Christ, and above all Baptism, the gate by which we enter into the Church. The communion of saints must be understood as the communion of the sacraments.... The name 'communion' can be applied to all of them, for they unite us to God.... But this name is better suited to the Eucharist than to any other, because it is primarily the Eucharist that brings this communion about." 951 Communion of charisms. Within the communion of the Church, the Holy Spirit "distributes special graces among the faithful of every rank" for the building up of the Church. Now, "to each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good." 952 "They had everything in common." "Everything the true Christian has is to be regarded as a good possessed in common with everyone else. All Christians should be ready and eager to come to the help of the needy... and of their neighbors in want." A Christian is a steward of the Lord's goods. 953 Communion in charity. In the sanctorum communio, "None of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself." "If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together. Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it." "Charity does not insist on its own way." In this solidarity with all men, living or dead, which is founded on the communion of saints, the least of our acts done in charity redounds to the profit of all. Every sin harms this communion. II. THE COMMUNION OF THE CHURCH OF HEAVEN AND EARTH 954 The three states of the Church. "When the Lord comes in glory, and all his angels with him, death will be no more and all things will be subject to him. But at the present time some of his disciples are pilgrims on earth. Others have died and are being purified, while still others are in glory, contemplating 'in full light, God himself triune and one, exactly as he is"': All of us, however, in varying degrees and in different ways share in the same charity towards God and our neighbors, and we all sing the one hymn of glory to our God. All, indeed, who are of Christ and who have his Spirit form one Church and in Christ cleave together. 955 "So it is that the union of the wayfarers with the brethren who sleep in the peace of Christ is in no way interrupted, but on the contrary, according to the constant faith of the Church, this union is reinforced by an exchange of spiritual goods." 4
