Also, thanks to Parishioners and Community members for their charity in our Tootsie Roll drive. We will be presenting a check for $950 to the Grays Harbor Hawks, Special Olympics team on Thursday, March 7th at the Knights Family Night monthly event. On March 17th, St. Patrick's Day, the Knights will be preparing breakfast after Mass at St. Joseph's. There could also be singing of traditional Irish music. St. Joseph's Altar Society will meet on Tuesday, March 12, 2019, at 7 p.m. in the basement of St. Joseph's. Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend. At this meeting we will plan for Deacon Tom's 30th anniversary celebration and the soup suppers during Lent. The Saint John s Altar Society will hold their meeting on March 14th at 12:00 noon in the Church Hall. Please plan on attending. All are welcome! STRENGTHENING THE CHURCH AT HOME Home Missions is the name for dioceses and parishes in the United States, including its territories and former territories, which cannot provide basic pastoral services to Catholics without outside help. Basic pastoral services include Mass and sacraments, religious education, and ministry training for priests, deacons, religious sisters and lay people. For many decades, the Church in the United States has sent missionaries overseas to serve the people of Latin America, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. The home missions are dioceses and parishes here in the United States that need the same kind of support. These home mission territories include over 40 percent of the dioceses in the United States which are unable, due to fragile financial situations, tough terrain, and/or too few Catholics, to provide even the most basic opportunities for learning about and deepening the Faith. Next weekend (March 9 and 10) there will be a second collection for Catholic Home Missions. Your support of the Catholic Home Missions can lift up the lives and faith of our brothers and sisters across the country including here in our state. Please be generous. The small nail attached to the two prayers is a reminder of the sacrifice our Lord Jesus made for us as well as the strip of purple across the nail; to signify our penitent behavior. The two prayers are to be said at night before going to bed. The Act of Contrition should be said after carefully reflecting on your day and asking the Lord to forgive any short comings you may have went through. The Our Father is to remind you that God is everything, he wants us to come to Him in everything through prayer and he wants us to be reminded that we have to forgive each other for our faults and failings. So enjoy this little gift and have a happy Lent. If you did not get this gift let one of the Youth know and we will make you one. Look for the white basked inthe back of the church. Rev. John McLauglin, Rest in Peace Fr. John McLaughlin died the morning of March 5, 2019. His family will certainly appreciate your prayers. Candidate for Baptism This year at St. Joseph Parish we have one person being Baptized into the Faith. Congratulations Dakota Usher. Today there will be the Rite of Acceptance here at the Parish level. On March 13 at St. Joseph in Chehalis there will be the Rite of Elect at the Archdiocese level. During Lent on March 17, 24 and 31 there will be the Scrutinies. The First Scrutiny is: Christ as Living Water; the Second Scrutiny: Christ as the Light of the World; the Third Scrutiny: Christ as the Resurrection and the Life. On the Easter Vigil Dakota will receive the Sacrament of Baptism, then along with his classmates, they will receive the Sacraments of Holy Communion and Confirmation with Fr. Parochial Administrator s Column Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, We began the penitential but joyous season of Lent with Ash Wednesday on March 6 th. Lent is the time of spiritual preparation prior to the Feast of the Resurrection of Jesus at Easter. On the opening day of Lent, we received ashes on our foreheads in the shape of a cross. Ashes are a sign of sorrow, penance, contrition, and humility. Each year, the ashes of Ash Wednesday remind us of our human frailty; they are a remembrance of our mortality, and point to the fact that we are made of dust and we will return to dust. The ashes of Ash Wednesday remind us also of the eternity of the soul. As you know, we lavish so much attention upon our body. One day our body will turn to dust, but the soul that we often ignore will live forever. When we accept ashes on our foreheads, we show that we are ready to change our ways in order to become closer to God. Our Lenten journey will last forty days, not counting the Sundays. In other words, the Sundays of Lent are certainly part of the Time of Lent, but they are not prescribed days of fast and abstinence. If you recall, the number forty shows up very often in the Bible. Noah was on the ark during forty days of rain. Moses prayed on a mountain for forty days before receiving the Law. The Hebrews left Egypt and spent forty days in the desert. Elijah walked through the wilderness for forty days. Jesus fasted for forty days in the desert. These periods are always times of special testing or preparation. Put simply, the forty days of Lent correspond to the forty days that Jesus spent in the wilderness to fast, pray, and endure the temptations of the devil, all in preparation for his public ministry which would culminate in His death on the cross. The season of Lent is a good time for us to examine our Christian life through the traditional practices of Lent: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Lent is a good time to deepen our prayer life. Our prayer has to be an act of faith. We pray for something and then place the outcome in God s hands, trusting God to care for us, believing that God may answer our prayer in ways unimagined. Faith-filled prayer also tells us that our prayer may not seem to be answered at all, but we leave that matter, too, with God.

A prayerful disposition is very important. When things go well, it is easy to forget about God. Let me share with you this reflection from Father John G. Hillier in keeping with prayer. -Some people just use God as they would use a 24/7 ATM. They just slide in the card, press the right numbers, and out comes the money. Then they just walk away without even a thank you and without giving the money machine another thought until next time they need it - Do we ever approach prayer that way? The disposition that lies behind this narrow concept of prayer is that prayer is only for asking. Is that all we have to say to God? Where is the prayer in our life that praises God, thanks God, adores God, acknowledges God s presence, expresses sorrow for sins? During this Lenten season, read the Lord s Prayer as Jesus presents it to us in Mt 6:9-13. Prayer is an essential element of our spiritual. It is not something to be engaged in just when we are worried or when we have reached the end of our resources. Saint Paul implores us to pray without ceasing (1Thes 5:17). Before any major decision, Jesus prayed. Before choosing the Twelve apostles, he spent the night in prayer to God (Lk 6: 12). Before the Holy Spirit descended on him at the Jordan, Luke declares that Jesus had been baptized and was praying (Lk 3:21). Also, Jesus is engaged in prayer before Peter s confession (Lk 9:18), at the transfiguration (Lk 9:28), when he teaches his disciples to pray (Lk 11:1), during the Last Supper (Lk 22:32), on the Mount of Olives (Lk 22:41) and on the cross (Lk 23:46). As followers of Jesus, we should learn how to pray from our Master. Before any significant action in our lives, we should engage in prayer. As for fasting, when we deny ourselves food that we normally enjoy and do so intentionally, we strengthen our will. As Bishop Richard J. Sklba puts it the basic purpose of any fast is to say no to ourselves for the sake of personal discipline. But there are many things from which we might fast. For this Lenten season, we can fast from gossip, mean judgments, angry retort, violence in thoughts, words, and actions; self-centeredness, isolation from the needy of our Parish or Mission, too much entertainment and other distractions that don t give us enough time for the works of the Lord. This list is not exhaustive. Almsgiving refers to the material generosity to the less fortunate. It reminds us that we have a moral responsibility to fulfill toward our brothers and sisters. It is one concrete measure of our commitment to Christ and his Church. The true test of our concern for the poor and people in need is found in the memos in our checkbooks. The checks we write

tell the real story of our priorities. During Lent, the church calls on us to be generous as God is generous to us. Almsgiving challenges to respond to the needs of the less fortunate and to see Christ in our brothers and sisters. On the first day of Lent, we heard Jesus speak to us through Matthew of praying, fasting, and almsgiving being done in secret. When prayer, fasting, and almsgiving are turned into secret deeds, they eliminate the motivation of being publicly seen. Also, when they are done in secret, they eliminate judgment. If they cannot be seen, then no one can judge who is engaged in these deeds and who is not. The righteous don t display their good deeds. Lent is also a good time to remember the importance of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. This sacrament is a pathway to spiritual responsibility and growth. There will be a Lenten Reconciliation Service at Saint Joseph in Elma on April 10 th at 6:00PM. No evening Mass that day. Several priests will be available for confessions. As we journey through Lent, let us search our hearts and ask God to remove from our lives anything that complicates our relationship with Him and with our brothers and sisters. Blessings on your Lenten journey! Father Charles Banduku Lenten Fast and Abstinence Guidelines Fasting, almsgiving, and prayer are the three traditional disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and of preparation for Baptism or of renewal of Baptism at Easter. Good Friday is a day of fast and abstinence. Fridays of Lent are also days of abstinence. Fasting is to be observed by all 18 years of age and older, who have not yet celebrated their 60th birthday. On a fast day one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one's needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and juices, are allowed. Abstinence is observed by all 14 years of age and older. On days of abstinence no meat is allowed. Note that when health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. When in doubt concerning fast and abstinence, the parish priest should be consulted.
