THE CHALLENGER LOVE.PRAY.SERVE. Glyndon United Methodist Church 410-833-2033 4713 Butler Road, PO Box 84 www.glyndonumchurch.org Glyndon, MD 21071 glyndonumch@aol.com Grace and peace to you in Jesus name! Over these last weeks of Lent, we have examined our story as we have been participating in the God Story. Lent is a time of reflection, of acknowledging our separation from God and recognizing the need for repentance. As we enter into Holy Week with palms waving, we end the week hiding in fear. Even as we share the darkest of days, we know that this is not the end. Just as the butterfly emerges from its cocoon, we see the living Christ emerge from the tomb, prepared to surprise us once more. The Easter story is our story. From a place of darkness and hiding we too emerge, celebrating the victory that is ours through the risen Christ. Holy Week is a difficult time for us as we experience the emotional journey of Jesus and his disciples. We identify with them, we become part of the story and the waiting begins. What we thought was lost is not and simply hearing the words of Scripture, our hearts are filled with gratitude for the One who has saved us once more. In the life of the church we live with transitions all around us. As we move from liturgical season to season, we live with change. I appreciate the kind words I have received from many here at Glyndon UMC as I begin the process of transitioning to the Smithville UMC in Dunkirk, Maryland. May God continue to bless you as you welcome Pastor Dawn Stewart on July 1. Missions Mission Team Meeting Are you interested in learning more about missions opportunities at Glyndon UMC? All are welcome to attend the Missions Committee Meetings that are held the first Monday of every other month. Imagine No Malaria is the United Methodist church-wide effort to overcome malaria in Africa and eliminate deaths caused by this preventable disease a goal world leaders hope to accomplish by 2015. Malaria is preventable, but infects nearly 500 million people each year and kills more than one million of those who become infected. Ninety percent of deaths caused by malaria occur in Africa where the disease is a leading killer of children. Every 60 seconds a child dies from malaria. Children who are able to survive the disease are faced with physical and mental impairments, such as poor growth and development. Moreover, every day 25 million pregnant African women risk severe illness and harm to their unborn children from a malaria infection. Malaria contributes to low birth weight among newborn infants, one of the leading risk factors for infant mortality. Our efforts may have started with sending nets, but they do not stop there. In addition to preventing maaria with bed nets, eliminating deaths caused by this disease will require educating communities and health care workers, developing health care infrastructure and making advancements in health care communications. Imagine No Malaria will create a stronger and more broad-based community health infrastructure to help The United Methodist Church in the fight against diseases of poverty. Nothing But Nets remains a key component of the campaign against malaria. In January 2007, the Gates Foundation provided a challenge grant to the Nothing But Nets malaria prevention campaign to match contributions up to $3 million a goal that was reached in August due in part to a groundswell of support from United Methodist churches across the U.S. According to the organization s website, the foundation has committed more than $6 billion in global health grants. ~ 2 ~

Confirmation CONFIRMATION It s time for Confirmation 2015! Our theme is Credo: Know your story, confirm your faith, live your commitment. Confirmation is a time for us to explore our faith and to make a decision to profess of our faith publically. In this way we affirm the commitment others made on our behalf at our baptism. Our meetings will be on Sunday evenings from 6:00 7:30 pm: March 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, April 12 and 26. We will not meet on Easter Sunday, April 5. The Service of Confirmation will be held on May 3, 2015 at the 11:00 service. We will work together to design the service for the day. Other activities include visiting St. Luke s UMC during worship a service project, and visiting one of the historic churches. The class will also participate in the Holy Thursday worship service. We invite the GUMC family to keep our youth in prayer as they explore their faith. Please continue to keep our Confirmation Class in your prayers! Pastor Dawn Stewart graduated from Wesley Theological Seminary in May 2013 and is excited to begin her first appointment in pastoral ministry at Glyndon UMC on July 1. Her husband, Kevin Hulsing, will be joining her. She has two grown children, Katie, 27 and David, 23, who live in Arlington, VA and Lothian, MD. Pastor Dawn retired from the United States Air Force in 2006 as a Lieutenant Colonel. She will be moving from Waldorf, MD where she works part-time at Good Shepherd UMC as the Minister of Worship and Creative Community. Pastor Dawn s passions are shaping creative, transformative worship experiences, leading dialogue groups that specifically seek to reach out to those who have felt hurt by or disconnected from the church, and building authentic Christian community where people of diverse backgrounds feel welcomed and equipped to love and serve their neighbors. Her gifts for ministry include creative worship leadership, bridge building, and spiritual leadership. She looks forward to journeying with you in faith and being the body of Christ in the Glyndon area. ~ 8 ~
