January 2019 Kinsmen Connection If you feel lonely, you re not alone. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved. Acts 2: 46-47 I go to worship when I m on vacation. I m not sharing this to show how righteous I am but I share this because I do value regular worship. The early church, as described in Acts, continued to meet together in the temple courts with the whole assembly of worshippers in Jerusalem. But the early church coupled their gathering in the temple with gathering in another space as well. The early Christians gathered together as a family to break bread, to share things in common and to experience the power of God s Word to transform their lives. When I worship on vacation, I usually do not know the names or recognize the faces of my fellow worshippers. And while we may know the faces and names of those in our worshipping community, you can be or even feel anonymous in worship. You can worship regularly and still feel alone. A feeling of loneliness is becoming more and more pervasive in our society. While social media enables us to make and enhance real life connections, social media usage can also contribute to our feeling of loneliness. Who would have thought that constantly comparing our lives to the lives of others in our feeds would contribute to our feeling of inadequacy or loneliness? Pastor s word God did not create us to be alone. God did not create us for independence but for interdependence. God wants us to have a space where we can care for one another, be accountable to one another and encourage one another. This is what we mean when we use the phrase experience family at Kinsmen. We know family can be a word the conjures up all sorts of positive and negative images. But what we mean by experience family is we want our members to be connected to a space where they can experience what God wants us to experience, a family united by the love of Jesus. I encourage you to join a group this January where you can experience family at Kinsmen. You can join a small group, Bible study, or women s circle that follows the sermon series or utilizes other material. You can join a common interest group that gathers around a common interest or common cause. You can join a ministry team that cares for one another as they serve others. Kinsmen is not a large congregation but it is large enough that you can feel alone. We don t want you to feel alone. We want you to experience what it means to be a part of God s family and have sisters and brothers in Christ who are devoted to one another. Look for more information about the January Group Launch in the Nathex/Lobby and at www.kinsmenlutheran.org In Christ, Mark England Happy New Year and Thank You! Thank you for the Pastor and Staff Christmas gifts! The Kinsmen Pastors & Staff 2
