Ken Sloane asked this crucial question at the recent Stewardship Summit. Vital congregations develop disciples who are generous givers. Creating a culture of generosity means shifting the church s focus in six ways. SHIFTING THE FOCUS From Seasonal to Continual. Since Jesus talked so much about money and possessions, what if churches gave people the opportunity to have conversations about money when we were not asking for money? From Scarcity to Abundance. What if we shifted the focus from talking about what we don t have to celebrating all that God has given us? From Got to to Gratitude. Giving is more than an obligation. Giving is a natural expression of gratitude for God s grace in our lives. From Purse to Purpose. People want to matter. Focus on how we give people purpose in their lives through the church s mission. From Numbers to Narrative. Shift our stewardship reporting to telling stories of people helped, and people making a difference, because of our generosity. From Mortar to Mission. Move your church s focus from maintaining a building to growing in Mission. Every step we take in these shifts of focus help move us to the tipping point to being generous disciples. Joe

The Waccamaw Indian People invite you to attend their 22 nd Annual Arts and Crafts Festival and Pauwau on November 1 st and 2 nd, 2014 on their tribal grounds at 591 Bluewater Rd, Aynor, SC. Gates open at 11am both days and Grand Entry on the 1 st is at 1pm and 6pm and at 2pm on the 2 nd. The Grand Entry is actually the start of the Pauwau. Just prior to the Grand Entry, the Grass Dancers are called to Dance the Grass Down. We use the ancient method to prepare the arena for the actual entry of the visiting dignitaries, veterans, tribal officials, and others who hold positions of honor. These honorees are followed by a long line of dancers who practice and represent all of the dance styles from many tribes in the country. After the procession stops, we honor our country with a Flag Song, our veterans with a Veterans Dance, and we have a word of thanks to the Creator for giving us this day and each other. After the Grand Entry we will have the Friendship Dance. The dancers form a long line while holding hands. Lead dancers lead the dance through various movements and tie the line of dancers into various knots and formations inside the dance arena. Everyone is invited to participate. After the Friendship Dance, the master of ceremonies will call for dancers to dance the various styles of dance and the dancers will twirl, dip and repeat movements that their ancestors did before them. There will be 20+ Native American vendors selling their arts and crafts and several food vendors. Admission: $6.00 for Adults, $3.00 for seniors and children 7-14, children 6 and under are free. Page 7 What is an Emmaus Walk and a Chrysalis Flight? It is a... A Journey with Christ While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and walked with them. - Luke 24:15 The walk to Emmaus is an experience of Christian spiritual renewal and formation that begins with a three-day short course in Christianity. It is an opportunity to meet Jesus Christ in a new way as God s grace and love is revealed to you through other believers. The Walk to Emmaus experience begins with the prayerful discernment and invitation from a sponsor. After one accepts this invitation they complete an application. The Emmaus leaders prayerfully consider each applicant and in God s time, the person is invited to attend a three-day experience of New Testament Christianity as a lifestyle. Following the three-day experience, participants are joined in small groups to support each other in their ongoing walk with Christ. Through the formational process of accountable discipleship in small groups and participation in the Emmaus community, each participant s individual gifts and servant-leadership skills are developed for use in the local church and its mission. Participants are encouraged to find ways to live out their individual call to discipleship in their home, church, and community. The objective of Emmaus is to inspire, challenge, and equip the local church members for Christian action in their homes, churches, communities and places of work. Emmaus lifts up a way for our grace-filled lives to be lived and shared with others. Want to learn more? Talk with your minister, or with someone in your church who has taken the Walk to Emmaus, or contact the District Office today!

Page 17 2014 Summit on Black Church October 2-4, 2014 Ministry with the Poor Register for the Summit on the Black Church The Summit on the Black Church is a conference gathering of African American clergy and laity held every other year for the purpose of celebrating the presence and ministry of the African American congregations in the SC and providing resourcing and training that would further strengthen, equip, and empower local congregations to make disciples for Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. This will be our third summit. The gathering features keynote worship addresses, several plenaries, a banquet, and practical workshops for clergy and laity focusing on leading effective ministry in the local church. The 2014 Summit will focus on Ministry with the Poor. The goal of this conference is to equip and empower congregations to impact the variables that cause poverty in their local context. In particular, this conference will focus in on children in poverty (Pan Methodist Campaign on Children and Poverty), Homelessness, and HIV & AIDS. Our energies will center on how congregations can directly impact their communities and the variable related to poverty. The dates for this event are October 2-4, 2014 The Keynote speaker for this event is Bishop Gregory V. Palmer, Resident Bishop of the West Ohio Annual Conference.
