C a m e r o n t a r y August 2017 Years ago I had a dream in which I saw everything as if through a piece of glass that had been broken and the pieces put back together in the wrong places but with the view was what it would have been originally. Everything in my line of sight was out of place and with jagged edges, like Picasso s Crying Woman, only more disjointed. In this dream, everywhere I went things were all out of place until I walked into a sanctuary. In the sanctuary everything was normal. When I left, everything was disjointed once again. In high school I was a musician for a musical my mom directed. The show was written expressly for church youth groups, so cast, crew, and most of the musicians were youth. I was running a little late for one of the first performances so I went crashing through the swinging doors and made the hard left turn with guitar case swinging wide to my right to keep me balanced as I made the turn. As soon as I made that turn I felt at peace and at home. Though the dream and the hard turn happened years apart, I hold them in the same place in my memory because of their similar location and emotional tone. More than once I have not really wanted to be a part of worship for a variety of reasons. Every time I attend despite my misgivings I come out of the experience having gotten something more than usual out of it. I have been various degrees of battered and broken, until I take my place in the chancel and hear those familiar words, Welcome to Faith. My wounds and bruises are still there, however for a moment even the deepest wounds are held in the hand of God and the gathered Body of Christ. In each of the above it is not simply the room, the sanctuary, that gives me a sense of peace and clarity. A sanctuary, empty except for God and me, does not give nearly as much comfort as a sanctuary populated with people of God in an attitude of worship. It is when we are gathered as the worshipping community that I feel the grace and peace of God touching my soul for the time we are together. Not everyone knows or remembers that my membership is elsewhere. I am a member of the annual conference, what some people call the congregation of the clergy. I have the same sense of peace when I gather with the congregation I serve and when I gather with the congregation of which I am a member. Any time I am a part of the Body of Christ gathered for worship is a deep and profound experience for me. When I am in a worship gathering made of people I know and love, who know and love me, the depth and profundity of the experience increases exponentially. It can be hard to remember that each of us is part of the United Methodist Church. We are not confined to our location on 16 th Street, we are a part of a worldwide denomination that touches lives in places and in ways we can only imagine. Oh, and we touch lives in ways that folks around the globe can t imagine as well. We are more than a series of congregations dotting the landscape across cities, towns, and country settings. We are a denomination with a rich history of worship and service in the name of Christ in places all over the world. Even those who are not members of the congregation but who participate in the ministries of Faith are a part of that rich denominational history. When we gather for worship we remind ourselves that we are part of something bigger than a group of individuals. Better yet we remember that our congregation is part of something bigger than a group of individual congregations. At our best we remember that our denomination is part of the Body of Christ made up of all who hear the Apostle Paul say, Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. (1 Corinthians 12:27)... I am a part of the Body of Christ gathered for worship... Grace and Peace, Cameron
