Characters God Adam: The first human, father of mankind, the Chosen servant of God, and one of the caretakers of the Garden of Eden. Eve: The first woman and mother of mankind. She was created with Adam and tends to the Garden of Eden with him. Angel Gabriel: One of the archangels of heaven who acts as a guardian at the Garden of Eden. Intellect, Decency, and Devotion: The three traits Angel Gabriel offered to Adam. Satan: The head of the rebellious angels of God who has fallen from heaven. He is the originator of sin who drives Adam and Eve to go against God s word.
Summary We begin the story with Adam and Eve, already married, and are given the garden that God had prepared for them. God tells Adam to live in the garden freely, enjoy its food, its clothing, and its comfort. But, there was one tree Adam and EVe were advised not to go near nor eat from, and if they did they would become among the wrong doers. God also warns Adam and EVe of Satan, describes him as an enemy. Gabriel comes to Adam, he offers hi three traits: intellect, decency, and devotion. He then asks him to choose between them. Adam chooses intellect.
Summary cont... Adam makes a staff for himself from a boxthorn tree. Satan comes to them, disguised ofcourse. He whispers in adams ear, O Adam! Shall I lead you to a tree that will give you immortality and a dominion that shall never perish. Adam was the curious about the tree this man spoke of, he then realizes it s the tree God told them to stay away from so he declines. Satan doesn t give up yet, he then swears to them that he is one of their well-wishers convincing them to eat from the tree. Adam and Eve automatically feel a sense of shame and guilt knowing that they have disobeyed god. God then addresses them all at once, sending them to earth
SUmmary cont... Before being sent down Adam speaks to God, asking him if God meant for him to make this mistake, God then replies the mistake is your own, I advised you not to make it. Adam and Eve then pleaded to God to forgive them, their entreat even made the angels cry. Adam and Eve were then sent down, apart from each-other. THey believed that GOd did this for a reason so they stayed apart at night and during the day they would be with one another. On Earth they would learn to fend for themselves, finding their own food and water. They would then cry, and when questioned by God as to you they were crying because God was pleased with them, they replied that it was because of their mistake.
Summary cont... God then spoke to angel Gabriel, telling him, "I am God, the All-Beneficent, the Ever-Merciful. And I wish to show mercy to Adam and Eve, for they have beseeched me. Take down to them a pavilion from paradise and bring them together inside of it." THe angles then descended and surrounded Adam and Eve bringing them together, but he did not give them everything like before, he gave them the needs to provide for themselves. And they lived on Earth.
Symbols Heaven: Represents paradise after death, and Adam and Eve s garden was a taste of what it would look like. Hell: Sinners, people who are not obedient to God go to hell to be punished. Forbidden Tree: This tree unlike the others represents God s creation of everything that attributes to living, including fruits and wheats Satan: His deception and manipulation represents sin, and the driving force behind committing sin.
Themes The Importance of Obedience to God: Adam and Eve are the first humans to disobey God and Satan is the first of all God s creations to disobey. Contrary to their actions, it is important to obey God because by obeying God, a person is placed in paradise in the after life. Good Vs. Evil: God and angels represent good while Satan and his followers represent Evil Forgiveness: I shall, and if you do perpetrate evil, repent to me, and I shall accept your repentance, for I am the Clement, the Ever-Merciful. " (page 49) As God addresses Adam he says that if evil ever does get to you just ask for my forgiveness and you shall have it. Loss of innocence: When Adam and Eve disobeyed God they were no longer innocent
