ABSTRACT Septian Raditya Prasetyo. C1307062. 2015. An Analysis of the Implicatures in A Selected Special Edition of Oprah Winfrey Show: The Biggest Interview with Justin Bieber (Pragmatic Approach). Thesis: English Department, Faculty Of Cultural Sciences, Sebelas Maret University, Surakarta. This research was conducted to map the types of implicature in the talk show the selected edition of Oprah Winfrey Show: The Biggest Interview with Justin Bieber. It was also done to unfold the intended meaning or message of every single utterance that contains implicature in the talk show. In addition this research was to determine if the implicatures found in the talk show were used effectively in the conversation. This research is a descriptive qualitative research that takes purposive sampling technique. The data of this research were taken from the dialogue containing utterance of implicature in the talk show entitled Oprah Winfrey Show: The Biggest Interview with Justin Bieber. They were classified by using Horn s notion of implicature and Searle s theory of speech acts. The findings of the research show that there are four major types of implicature found in the talk show. They are Assertives, Directives, Commissives and Expressives. Each of them consists of more concrete types of implicature or speech act. Assertive type found in the talk show consists of asserting, stating and claiming implicature. Directive type comprises of questioning and requesting implicature. Commissive type consists of offering and refusing implicature. Expressive type is manifested in the form of praising implicature. The study concludes that stating Assertive implicatures is the type of implicature that is found the most in the talk. It is due to its nature in the conversation which functions as the manifestation of the exchange of information. Next, the study also unfolds that all utterances that contain implicature that are found in the talk show fulfill the two criteria to be categorized for being effective in the usage in the conversation. First, they serve the purpose of the use of the implicature. Secnd, they are well understood by the partner of the conversation, which is deemed by the response of the partner of conversation.
