Pastor Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God, our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. Our help is in the name of the Lord. Congr. (sing) Who made heaven and earth Pastor I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord. Congr. (sing) And Thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Pastor Almighty God, our Maker and Redeemer, we poor sinners confess unto You that we are by nature sinful and unclean and that we have sinned against You by thought, word, and deed. Wherefore we flee for refuge to Your infinite mercy, seeking and imploring Your grace for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ. ALL O most merciful God, who hast given Thine only-begotten Son to die for us, have mercy upon us and for His sake grant us remission of all our sins; and by Thy Holy Spirit increase in us true knowledge of Thee and of Thy will and true obedience to Thy Word, to the end that by Thy grace we may come to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Pastor Almighty God, our heavenly Father, has had mercy upon us and has given His only Son to die for us and for His sake forgives us all our sins. To those who believe in His name He gives power to become the sons of God and has promised them His Holy Spirit. He who believes and is baptized shall be saved. Grant this, Lord, unto us all. Congr. (sing) Amen. (congregation is seated) THE INTROIT Having received the Lord s forgiveness, we are glad to enter into His courts with praise and thanksgiving. This entrance is made in the Introit with the Lord s own Word, often from the Psalms. P: All the earth shall worship You: C: And shall sing to You, O God. P: They shall sing to Your name: C: Oh You who are the Most High. P: Make a joyful noise to God, all you lands: C: Sing forth the honor of His name, make His praise glorious. THE SALUTATION (Greeting) PASTOR The Lord be with you. CONGR. (sing) And with thy spirit. THE COLLECT FOR THE DAY The main thoughts for the day are collected together in this prayer. PASTOR Let us pray. CONGR. (sing) Amen. THE BIBLE LESSONS God speaks to us. The Old Testament Reading: Isaiah 42:1-7 "Behold! My Servant whom I uphold, My Elect One in whom My soul delights! I have put My Spirit upon Him; He will bring forth justice to the Gentiles. 2 He will not cry out, nor raise His voice, Nor cause His voice to be heard in the street. 3 A bruised reed He will not break, And smoking flax He will not quench; He will bring forth justice for truth. 4 He will not fail nor be discouraged, Till He has established justice in the earth; And the coastlands shall wait for His law." 5 Thus says God the LORD, Who created the heavens and stretched them out, Who spread forth the earth and that which comes from it, Who gives breath to the people on it, And spirit to those who walk on it: 6 "I, the LORD, have called You in righteousness, And will hold Your hand; I will keep You and give You as a covenant to the people, As a light to the Gentiles, 7 To open blind eyes, To bring out prisoners from the prison, Those who sit in darkness from the prison house. PASTOR Here ends the Old Testament Reading. We continue with the responsive reading of: THE GRADUAL The Gradual is a Bridge of praise that links the Old Testament with the New Testament. P: Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel, Who only does wondrous things! C: And blessed be His glorious name forever! P: The mountains will bring peace to Your people, C: And the hills righteousness. Hallelujah! Hallelujah! P: Make a joyful shout to the LORD, all you lands! C: Serve the LORD with gladness! Hallelujah! CONGR. (sing) Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! PASTOR The New Testament Reading comes from Acts chapter 10, beginning there in the 34 th verse.

CONGR. (sing) Glory be to Thee, O Lord! New Testament Reading Acts 10:34-38 Then Peter opened his mouth and said: "In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality. 35 "But in every nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him. 36 "The word which God sent to the children of Israel, preaching peace through Jesus Christ; He is Lord of all; 37 "that word you know, which was proclaimed throughout all Judea, and began from Galilee after the baptism which John preached: 38 "how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him. PASTOR: CONGR: (sing) This ends the New Testament Reading Praise be to Thee, O Christ! THE APOSTLES CREED We boldly confess what we believe. (Hymnal, page 12) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of Heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, Born of the Virgin Mary; Suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; The Holy Christian Church, the communion of saints; The forgiveness of sins; The resurrection of the body; And the life everlasting. Amen. Hymn 131 THE SERMON Luke 3:15-17, 21, 22 Now as the people were in expectation, and all reasoned in their hearts about John, whether he was the Christ or not, 16 John answered, saying to all, "I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 "His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather the wheat into His barn; but the chaff He will burn with unquenchable fire." 21 When all the people were baptized, it came to pass that Jesus also was baptized; and while He prayed, the heaven was opened. 22 And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, "You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased." Theme: THE HEAVENS OPENED AT JESUS BAPTISM I. They opened on the Son in prayer II. They opened for the descending Spirit III. They were open as the Father spoke THE OFFERTORY In this prayer we OFFER God our hearts, asking Him for that best of all gifts, the Holy Spirit. (Hymnal, pages 12-13) (sing) Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from Thy presence, and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation; and uphold me with Thy free spirit. Amen. THE OFFERING OF THANKFUL HEARTS In tangible evidence of our gratitude, we offer the Lord the gift of our money, remembering that He has first given to us that we might have to give to Him. While the ushers present our offerings at the Lord s Altar, we stand and sing the offering hymn 438:4-5: We Lord would lay at Thy behest The costliest offerings on Thy shrine But when we give, and give our best, We give Thee only what is Thine. O Father, whence all blessings come; O Son, Dispenser of God's store; O Spirit, bear our offerings home: Lord, make them Thine forevermore. PRAYERS - (Pastor) THE LORD S PRAYER - (All) Our Father Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever, Amen. Hymn 775 Congregation stands for: PASTOR: THE BENEDICTION The blessing given by God for the blessing of His people (Numbers 6:24-26). The LORD bless you and keep you. The LORD make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you. The LORD lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace. CONGR. (sing) Amen, Amen, Amen. My Servant whom I uphold, My Elect One in whom My soul delights! I have put My Spirit upon Him; He will bring forth justice to the Gentiles." Isaiah 42:1 (a letter from Tom Naumann) January 8, 2012 2012 CLC MISSION HELPER TRIP TO EAST AFRICA Dear Members of St. John's and Peace Lutheran Churches, I have really enjoyed my short stays here in Clarkston over the last year and a half and I really appreciate the hospitality with which you all have welcomed my family. Clarkston/Orofino is a great place to call home! I am thankful to the LORD for leading me along the path to become a pastor of the CLC. I am currently 20 years old and in the second half of my junior year of pre-theological studies at Immanuel Lutheran College in Eau Claire, WI. This summer I am blessed with the opportunity to travel to East Africa to the countries of Kenya and Tanzania in order to evangelize among our CLC sister congregations in those countries. I am very excited about the chance to serve the Lord on this trip! Members of the Mission Helper Team and I will be working with the pastors of the Kenya-CLC and the Tanzania-CLC to conduct one-day child evangelism programs. Many of the children whom we will be preaching the Gospel to have never heard about their Savior Jesus and the salvation that is theirs through Him. I would ask you to please keep me and all the mission helpers in your prayers. Above all, pray for the Word to take root and bear fruit in the hearts and lives of all those who hear it. I am also asking you to consider helping me with the cost of this trip. The cost for each volunteer is estimated to be around $3,000. This includes airfare, food, lodging, travel costs, and the costs of the vaccinations that are recommended for travel to a developing nation. If you are able to contribute to the cost of this trip, I would greatly appreciate it. Please make out all donation checks to your local congregation and place it in an envelope marked: Tom Naumann Mission Helper Trip. The Lord in His Word has given us all the great commission to go and make disciples of all nations. I am thankful that the Lord is giving me this opportunity to spread of the Gospel in East Africa with the message that Jesus Christ came to die for the sins of all! I humbly invite you to share with me in this trip whether you are able to support me financially and/or with your prayers. Joining you in His Service, Tom Naumann Old Testament Reading for this 1 st Sunday after Epiphany

The OT Reading comes to us from Isaiah 42:1-7. Here our gracious God describes the work that His Annointed One, our Savior came to do for us. We read went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him. Isaiah 42:1-7 "Behold! My Servant whom I uphold, My Elect One in whom My soul delights! New Testament Reading: In these verses the Apostle Peter s words to a man named Cornelius proclaims the good news of peace through Jesus Christ whom God anointed with the Holy Spirit and with power right after Jesus baptism. We read... Acts 10:34-38 Then Peter opened his mouth and said: "In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality. 35 "But in every nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him. 36 "The word which God sent to the children of Israel, preaching peace through Jesus Christ; He is Lord of all; 37 "that word you know, which was proclaimed throughout all Judea, and began from Galilee after the baptism which John preached: 38 "how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who
