Cadral of Holy Cross Boston, Massachusetts Celebration of Chrism Mass Tuesday of Holy Week March 31, 2015 His Eminence Seán Patrick Cardinal O Malley, OFM Cap. Archbishop of Boston Celebrant All Christians are anointed because all are filled with Spirit s gifts for building up of church and church s service to world. In every local church one Christian presides in love and orchestrates church s ministry: this is bishop, or chief pastor. It is not surprising, refore, that most ancient liturgical witnesses designate bishop as consecrator of sacramental oils. Although priests once blessed oils of catechumens and sick and may do so in some circumstances, only bishop may consecrate chrism with which baptized are sealed at confirmation and ordination. This rite is one of last rites of preparation before Triduum begins. Before local church baptizes, it prepares chrism which will be used in Vigil. This celebration has always retained a special character of collegiality. Even in centuries when eucharistic concelebration had disappeared from church s life, ritual for blessing and consecration of oils retained strong elements which reminded all that ministry in church is never work of an individual but of a community of ministers of different gifts and responsibilities. The present celebration of rite has been restored as a full concelebration of bishop with his clergy and with full participation of laity.

Collect The Liturgy of Word First Reading Isaiah 61: 1-3, 6, 8-9 Read by Sr. Nieves Salinas, PDDM The Spirit of Lord GOD is upon me, because LORD has anointed me; He has sent me to bring glad tidings to lowly, to heal brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to captives and release to prisoners, To announce a year of favor from LORD and a day of vindication by our God, to comfort all who mourn; To place on those who mourn in Zion a diadem instead of ashes, To give m oil of gladness in place of mourning, a glorious mantle instead of a listless spirit. You yourselves shall be named priests of LORD, ministers of our God shall you be called. I will give m ir recompense faithfully, a lasting covenant I will make with m. Their descendants shall be renowned among nations, and ir offspring among peoples; All who see m shall acknowledge m as a race LORD has blessed.

Abbott Gospel Homily Luke 4: 16-21 His Eminence Seán Patrick Cardinal O Malley, OFM Cap. Archbishop of Boston Renewal of Priestly Promises Priests: Priests: Priests: Beloved sons, on anniversary of that day when Christ our Lord conferred his priesthood on his Apostles and on us, are you resolved to renew, in presence of your Bishop and God s holy people, promises you once made? I am. Are you resolved to be more united with Lord Jesus and more closely conformed to him, denying yourselves and confirming those promises about sacred duties towards Christ s Church which, prompted by love of him, you willingly and oyfully pledged on day of your priestly ordination? I am. Are you resolved to be faithful stewards of mysteries of God in Holy Eucharist and or liturgical rites and to discharge faithfully sacred office of teaching, following Christ Head and Shepherd, not seeking any gain, but moved only by zeal for souls? I am.

Then Cardinal addresses people: People: People: People: All: As for you, dearest sons and daughters, pray for your Priests, that Lord may pour out his gifts abundantly upon m, and keep m faithful as ministers of Christ, High Priest, so that y may lead you to him, who is source of salvation. Christ, hear us. Christ, graciously hear us. Pray for priests who have died since last we celebrated Chrism Mass: (Names of deceased)...and for all our deceased brors and sisters, that irs might be unending oy of life in God s presence. Christ, hear us. Christ, graciously hear us. And pray also for me, that I may be faithful to apostolic office entrusted to me in my lowliness and that in your midst I may be made day by day a living and more perfect image of Christ, Priest, Good Shepherd, Teacher and Servant of all. Christ, hear us. Christ, graciously hear us. May Lord keep us all in his charity and lead all of us, shepherds and flock, to eternal life. Amen. Rite of Consecration of Chrism Let us pray that God our almighty Far will bless this oil so that all who are anointed with it may be inwardly transformed and come to share in eternal salvation. God our maker, source of all growth in holiness, accept oyful thanks and praise we offer in name of your Church. In beginning, at your command, earth produced fruit-bearing trees. From fruit of olive tree you have provided us with oil for holy Chrism. The prophet David sang of life and oy that oil would bring us in sacraments of your love. After avenging flood, dove returning to Noah with an olive branch announced your gift of peace. This was a sign of a greater gift to come. Now waters of Baptism wash away sins of men, and by anointing with olive oil, you make us radiant with your oy. At your command, Aaron was washed with water, and your servant Moses, his bror, anointed him priest. This too foreshadowed greater things to come. After your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, asked John for Baptism in waters of Jordan, he sent Spirit upon him in form of a dove and by witness of your own voice you declared him to be your only, well-beloved Son. In this you clearly fulfilled prophecy of David, that Christ would be anointed with oil of gladness beyond his fellow men.

All concelebrants extend ir right hands toward Chrism, without saying anything, until end of prayer. And so, Far, we ask you to bless + this oil you have created. Fill it with power of your Holy Spirit through Christ your Son. It is from him that Chrism takes its name and with Chrism you have anointed for yourself Priests and kings, Prophets and Martyrs. Make this Chrism a sign of life and salvation for those who are to be born again in waters of Baptism. Wash away evil y have inherited from sinful Adam, and when y are anointed with this holy oil make m temples of your glory, radiant with goodness of life, that has its source in you. Through this sign of chrism grant m royal, priestly, and prophetic honor, and clo m with incorruption. Let this be indeed Chrism of salvation for those who will be born again of water and Holy Spirit. May y come to share eternal life in glory of your Kingdom. Through Christ our Lord. & b ΠA - men, a - - - men. Choral Anm Greater Love Hath No Man Many waters cannot quench love, neir can floods drown it. Love is strong as death. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on tree, That we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness. Ye are washed, ye are sanctified, ye are ustified in name of Lord Jesus. Ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation; That ye should show forth praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light. I beseech you brethren, by mercies of God, that you present your bodies, a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. Ireland Eucharistic Prayer

Guidelines for Reception of Communion For Catholics As Catholics, we fully participate in celebration of Eucharist when we receive Holy Communion. We are encouraged to receive Communion devoutly and frequently. In order to be properly disposed to receive Communion, participants should not be conscious of grave sin and normally should have fasted for one hour. A person who is conscious of grave sin is not to receive Body and Blood of Lord without prior sacramental confession except for a grave reason where re is no opportunity for confession. In this case, person is to be mindful of obligation to make an act of perfect contrition, including intention of confessing as soon as possible (canon 916). A frequent reception of Sacrament of Penance is encouraged for all. For our fellow Christians We welcome our fellow Christians to this celebration of Eucharist as our brors and sisters. We pray that our common baptism and action of Holy Spirit in this Eucharist will draw us closer to one anor and begin to dispel sad divisions which separate us. We pray that se will lessen and finally disappear, in keeping with Christ s prayer for us that y may all be one (Jn 17:21). Because Catholics believe that celebration of Eucharist is a sign of reality of oneness of faith, life, and worship, members of those churches with whom we are not yet fully united are ordinarily not admitted to Holy Communion. Eucharistic sharing in exceptional circumstances by or Christians requires permission according to directives of diocesan bishop and provisions of canon law (canon 844 4). Members of Orthodox Churches, Assyrian Church of East, and Polish National Catholic Church are urged to respect discipline of ir own Churches. According to Roman Catholic discipline, Code of Canon Law does not obect to reception of communion by Christians of se Churches (canon 844 3). For those not receiving Holy Communion All who are not receiving Holy Communion are encouraged to express in ir hearts a prayerful desire for unity with Lord Jesus and with one anor. For non-christians We also welcome to this celebration those who do not share our faith in Jesus Christ. While we cannot admit m to Holy Communion, we ask m to offer ir prayers for peace and unity of human family.
