The Power of a Focused Life Choosing to Invest in Broken People 1 Corinthians 7: 1-25 (located on page 1146 in the Bible located in the seat back pocket) Message Notes Rarely does anyone set out to drift away from their marriage. Drifting never happens intentionally. It always happens unintentionally. In the ocean we take our eyes off the focal point, we stop paddling, and we simply float off course in the current because we are no longer thinking about trying to stay where we are. Drifting in life happens much the same way it does in the ocean. We take our eyes off our values, we stop putting effort to our marriages, and we get sucked up into the current of busyness and distraction. Before you know it you are no longer accomplishing what we were formerly focused on. @timjohnsonkbj @newcovlincoln New Covenant Community Church September 11, 2016 1
Next Steps If you have found yourself experiencing marriage drift here are three questions to help you get back to where you need to be. 1. Ask the why question! Why has your marriage drifted? 2. Ask the what question! Once you know why, you can determine what you need to be doing to get back on course the what question will help you determine your priorities. 3. Ask the how question! You are now able to decide how you will do it. A plan to accomplish your priorities will help you get your marriage back on track. Adapted from http://disciplemakingleaders.com/mission-drift/ For accountability purposes, make contact with a mature follower of Jesus whom you respect and talk about your commitment to stop drifting. Here is a suggested plan from Michael Hyatt: michaelhyatt.com/how-to-become-your-spouses-best-friend.html 1. Make a list of what you would want in a best-friend. If you were going to advertise on Craig s List for a best friend, what would the ad look like? Perhaps it might look like this: Wanted: Best Friend Prospective candidates will: Make me feel good about being me. Affirm my best qualities (especially when I am feeling insecure) Call out the best in me, and hold me accountable to the best version of myself. Listen without judging or trying to fix me. Give me the benefit of the doubt. Extend grace to me when I am grumpy or having a bad day. Remember my birthday, favorite foods, music, and art. Know my story and love me regardless. Spend time with me, just because they enjoy my company. Speak well of me when I am not present. Serve me with a joyful spirit and without complaining. Speak the truth to me when no one else will. Never shame me, diminish me, or make me feel small. Become excited about what I am excited about. Celebrate my wins! 2. Now become that person for your spouse. That s right. Turn the table. Make this a list of the kind of friend you will become. I can promise you this: anyone who does half of these kinds of things will have more friends than he or she knows what to do with. But what if you focused this effort on your spouse? Think of the possibilities. 3. Keep sowing the seeds, until the relationship blossoms. How long will it take to create this kind of relationship? It all depends on where you are starting. For some it might be several months. For others, it might take years. Friendships are like gardens; they must be cultivated. The key is to be consistent and persistent without expectations. This is really nothing more than the application of the Golden Rule to marriage: Do to others what you would want them to do to you (Luke 6:31). New Covenant Community Church September 11, 2016
