Knightly News Volume 20 Issue 4 April 2019 Contact the Editor: gnelson8156@gmail.com www.kofc8156.org Inside this issue: Insurance Agent Birthdays Scholarships Wives Dinner Knight & Family 2 3 Grand Knight s Report Greetings Brothers, Next Business Meeting April 3 2019 Mass at 6:30pm Meeting 7:00pm Meet in the New PAC Rooms 212-213 Chancellor s Corner Budget Time 4 Culture of Life 5 Officers & Calendar of Events 6 Now that Lent is here, I hope all of us has had a chance to take the time necessary to think about our lives, how they relate to our loved ones, and the rest of the world. The Catholic church has always been a great promoter of humility and the dignity of every human. What this means to me is that not one of us is any better than the other - we are all equal when it comes to the love of our Creator. I firmly believe we all have something to contribute to this world, or we wouldn t be here. The harder part is trying to figure out how we can contribute. So if you haven t had the time to think about this - take some time during Lent and do it. You might not come up with the answer, but you should be a little closer. World Marriage Day 7 There are many activities coming up in the next few months. First and foremost, we ll be voting on some old business regarding Fr. Ray s 25th Anniversary - please try to make the business meeting on Wednesday April 3rd - if you can. We ll also be holding our Council Budget Planning meeting for the next fraternal year in April. If you have charities you think would welcome help from the Knights, please attend this meeting and make your case. In May we ll have the Ladies Appreciation Dinner - all Knights (past on and present) are welcome to attend - stay tuned for more info. And if you have some ideas on activities you think would be fun, please contact me and let me know. It s sometimes tough for the officers to know what some of the less active members would like to be involved with. One other very important item - if you ve thought about being an officer, and have made your third degree, please don t hesitate to talk to one of the current officers to ask questions and learn more. A council our size needs many people to run successfully - and the more we have that do their share, the more effective the council can be. Easter April 21 And most importantly - I wish all of you and your families a Happy and Blessed Easter! Peace to all, Glenn

A few things to consider as we head into tax time: Contribution deadlines: The deadline to contribute to your IRA for the 2018 tax year is April 15, 2019. You can make deposits any time between now and then. Contribute early and often: The earlier in the year you contribute to your IRA, the longer your money has to grow tax-deferred. After you contribute the maximum for 2018, consider making deposits now for the 2019 tax year. You can make lump sum contributions or establish a plan to make systematic payments throughout the year. Maximum contributions: The maximum limit for the 2018 tax year is $5,000, or $5,500 if you are aged 50 or above. Traditional or Roth: We can help you determine which is right for you. The primary strength of a Roth IRA is that all interest, growth and qualified withdrawals are tax-free. Think about combining a Roth IRA with your 401(k) to maximize you monthly after-tax retirement income. The Order is also able to rollover/transfer old 401(k) s, IRA s, Roth IRA s to a guaranteed Knights of Columbus plan. Competitive Rates: By making your IRA deposits through the Knights of Columbus Annuity plans, you not only get great rates, you get the personal service and financial expertise of a Brother Knight-backed by the strength of more than a century of the Order s solid financial excellence. Call me to learn how the Knights of Columbus can help you build a secure future from your income protection needs all the way through to your retirement. I can help you put a plan in place that will meet your needs, goals and budget. That s what we re here for: the Knights of Columbus protecting families for generations. Knight & Family of the Month Knight: Steve Meyers This month s Knight of the month is no stranger to the anyone who has ever been to a bbq, volunteered with Habitat for Humanity or attended a Mission to Mexico weekend. Steve Myers has been chosen as this month s Knight of the Month due to his dedication to our council and his involvement with Mission to Mexico. Although he moved to Round Rock a few years ago, it doesn t keep him from attending our monthly business meetings and our monthly bbq s. In his spare time, Steve also attends the Methodist Mens group functions in Round Rock and his wife, Ann, keeps him busy with her remodeling company. Steve and Ann have been a huge supporter of our Blue Jeans and Boots Gala since its inception. When not busy doing remodeling or attending Mission to Mexico trips, they enjoy traveling and living life to its fullest. If you happen to see Steve at a meeting or event, please be sure to congratulate him on being chosen as Knight of the Month. Family: Johnny & Heidi Langan Congratulations to our Knights Family of the Month - Johnny and Heidi Langan. They have both been prolific volunteers for many of the activities and ministries at St. Catherine s. Heidi has led the Children s Choir for over 25 years, she s a member of the Prayer Shawl ministry, and she teaches music for AISD elementary students - not to mention volunteering with Texas Professional Educators as President for AISD and Region 13 and a member of the Saturday Choir. Johnny - also a member of the Saturday Choir, acts as Ministry Leader for Mass Coordinators, along with volunteering for Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (at Mass), Ushers, Team member for Altar Servers, Ministry database manager and scheduler, RCIA team member, Environment team member, Funeral Mass team member, member of the Parish Council, Knights Scholarship team lead, and also finds time to be on the Golf committee and Financial Secretary for the KoC Council 8156! Johnny and Heidi both demonstrate care and dedication for all the people they come in contact and are deserving of this award. When you see them around St. Catherine s, be sure to thank them for their service to the parish and community and congratulate them on being named family of the month!

Volume 20 Issue 4 Page 4 Chancellors Corner Greg Nelson Contact the Chancellor to let the council know about prayer requests for yourself or family members. Let your Knights Family Pray with and for you. Email: gnelson8156@outlook.com This Month we have added: Melanie Fannin MTM Board member from Steve Myers John Pembe RIP Ahern s Son Jerry III Ray Wilson s Son in Law Larry Odom s Uncle RIP Glenn Dobmeier Darcy, Robert Bradfute s Sister in Law Budget Meeting - Represent Your Charity Yes, it is that time of the year again, time to start budget meetings for next fraternal year. I have scheduled the meetings to be held on Sunday, April 7 th, 14 th and 28 th (if needed). The format will be the same as the last several years. We have certain expenses each year that we budget, items like per capitas, bbq expenses, fund raising expenses, etc. While we try to keep this to a minimum, we must set aside some money for these items. We also budget for our charities also. If you have a charity you would like to support, it is imperative that you attend these meetings to make your request. While we don t have the exact figures yet, I suspect we will have a little less to budget this year due to our income being down as of today. Meetings will start at 7 PM each of the first two Sundays. If we need the third Sunday, April 28 th, that meeting will also be at 7 PM. We have not needed the third meeting the last few years, so be sure to show up for the first two to have an impact on our budget. If you have any questions, please let me know. Thank you Eddie Maurek 512/965-2137 emazu5@gmail.com

Page 5 Knightly News Culture of Life Criston Klotz TO CLAIM THE RIGHT TO ABORTION, INFANTICIDE, AND EUTHANASIA, AND TO RECOGNIZE THAT RIGHT IN LAW, MEANS TO ATTRIBUTE TO HUMAN FREEDOM A PERVERSE AND EVIL SIGNIFICANCE: THAT OF AN ABSOLUTE POWER OVER OTHERS AND AGAINST OTHERS. (St. John Paul II, Evangelium Vitae) NATIONAL NEWS Yesterday, [Sean Carney, President/CEO 40 Days for Life] joined the Glenn Beck Radio Program to discuss both the Unplanned film AND YOUR prayer, witness, and sacrifice in front of abortion businesses. Tune in to [his] conversation [with Glenn Beck] by clicking the image or visiting: https://youtu.be/y4mpvwxmelo [They] discussed how Unplanned is a true story of God responding to the prayers of ordinary people in extraordinary ways. Do you trust Him to work miracles in your community? Democratic Party and its presidential hopefuls have made it clear how they stand on abortion and the value of the life of a baby. Infanticide has now been widely accepted by them as the new rights of women to control their bodies. For example, Beto O Rourke says he would allow INFANTICIDE because he thinks women should make their own decisions about their own bodies. We are now talking about the right of a baby born alive to be given the medical care necessary for him or her (or them) to live. Or, you have Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez telling us that Americans need to stop reproducing to save the planet. 40 DAYS FOR LIFE BRINGS 2 CHRONICLES 7:14 INTO 21ST CENTURY FOCUS. AS ONE HUMAN RACE, WE BECOME UNITED IN PRAYER. GLORY TO GOD! Dr. Alveda King, Niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. AUSTIN NEWS. Central Texas Coalition for Life began its sidewalk prayer program on March 6, 2019. Come out and join us as a part of your Lenten preparation. All you do is stand on the sidewalk and pray and provide a witness to God and His people that you stand for Life. We also pray for the women, the fathers and the other people impacted by an abortion whether it is surgical or drug-induced. Find the movie, Unplanned, showing at several theaters here in Austin and go see it. From the writers/co-producers of God's Not Dead, comes a film that speaks to one of the most polarizing topics of our day. Unplanned brings an eyeopening look inside the abortion industry from a woman who was once its most passionate advocates, Abby Johnson. After reading Abby Johnson's best-selling book of the same title, the producers were moved to bring this inspiring true story to the big screen, giving voice to a woman who has been on both sides of the abortion conversation. Unplanned is the most important movie you'll ever see on the most controversial issue of our time. No one will leave this film unmoved by Abby's journey. Watch the official trailer for Unplanned here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gblwpkbc3ww. 40 DAYS FOR LIFE IS A TESTIMONY TO THE POWER OF PRAYER AND WHAT CAN HAPPEN WHEN WE'RE CONSUMED BY A MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION, NAMELY THAT LIFE IS SACRED AND EVERY BABY AT EVERY STAGE OF DEVELOPMENT DESERVES TO BE PROTECTED UNDER LAW. GOD IS ON THE MOVE AMIDST THE DARKNESS. Jim Daly, Focus on the Family
