The Epistle Newsletter of St. Paul s Church A Parish in e Diocese of San Joaquin The Anglican Church in Nor America September, 2013 Patriot Day Observance Wednesday, September 11 In December of 2001, en-president George Bush signed into law a joint resolution of Congress, officially designating September 11 as Patriot Day, wi e intention of it being a day of remembrance for e 2,997 victims of e attacks at occurred on September 11, 2001. Since at time, observances have grown to include anksgiving for e efforts of ose who work to prevent similar attacks in e future. St. Paul s Patriot Day observance will be ree-fold, and parishioners are invited and encouraged to participate in any or all of e events, as listed below: Holy Communion A service of Holy Communion in remembrance of ose who died and in anksgiving for ose who serve, will be held in e Church at 5:30 PM. Pot-luck Supper A pot-luck supper will be held in Rivera Hall at 6:15 PM. Parishioners are invited to bring a salad, a main course, or a dessert. Beverages will be provided by e church. Video Presentation Engineering Ground Zero will be shown in Rivera Hall. This video first aired on e 10 anniversary of e September 11 attacks. It is e story of rebuilding e World Trade Center and e National September 11 Memorial and Museum. Child care and activities for children and you will be provided during bo e communion service and e after-dinner video presentation. Legal Fund Drive During September, e parish will undertake a drive to raise money for e Legal Fund for e purpose of allowing e parish to continue e efforts to secure St. Paul s property for e use of e congregation s worship, ministries and programs. Additional information will be mailed later in September. In addition, question and answer forums will be held at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, September 18, and at 9:30 AM on Sunday, September 22. Friendship and Fellowship Event Saturday, September 14 St. Paul s is having an informal gaering for adults Saturday, September 14, beginning at 6:30 pm. The gaering will be at e home of Richard and Pam James, 6529 W. Harter Avenue, Visalia.. This gaering is for long-time members and newcomers alike. And visitors and guests are welcome, too! September, 2013 Page 3 Anglican Church Women Board Meeting The September meeting of e ACW Board will be at 10:00 AM on Monday, September 9. The meeting is open to all women of e parish. Guild Meeting St. Anne s Guild meets monly for devotions and fellowship, and is open to all women of e parish. The next meeting of e guild will be at 11:45 on Monday, September 16, in e Guild Room. Maggie King is e leader of e guild, and she may be contacted at 688-9588 for more information. Monly Luncheons Most mons of e year, e ACW hosts a luncheon in Rivera Hall on e first Monday of e mon. The next luncheon will be at 11:45 on Monday, October 7. Cost is $10. These luncheons are a great way for everyone to become acquainted wi oer members of e congregation, so all women are encouraged to participate. Men are welcome, too! Honored Women s Luncheon The annual Diocesan Honored Women Luncheon will be hosted by e ACW of St. Columba Church, Fresno. The luncheon will be held on Saturday, October 12, from 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM at Tachi Palace Event Center in Lemoore. Daughters of e Holy Cross The Daughters of e Holy Cross will meet in e Guild Room at 10:00, Thursday, September 12. The Daughters are women who have committed eir lives to e work and service of e Lord Jesus rough prayer, service, study and evangelism. They normally meet on e second Thursday of each mon at 10:00, in e Guild Room. Any woman who is interested in joining is dedicated group is welcome at any meeting, where questions will be gladly answered. Questions can also be addressed to Betty Blackmon. Leadership in e Diocese of San Joaquin The Annual Convention for e Diocese of San Joaquin will be held Friday, November 8 and Saturday, November 9, at St. James Caedral in Fresno. During e convention, delegates from e missions and parishes of e diocese will elect people to fill positions on e boards and committees listed below. Anyone interested in being nominated, or desiring to nominate someone else, is asked to speak wi Fr. James. Page 4 ] September, 2013 YOUTH MINISTRIES Trip to Magic Mountain You Group Retreat All junior and senior high school students are invited to participate in Magic Mountain s Christian Family Night wi e you group from St. Paul s Church. The Well Nor is a Christian retreat for junior and senior high school students offered by e Anglican Diocese of San Joaquin. The purpose is to share e good news of Jesus wi students, bo in e church and outside of it, and to encourage a life of discipleship. The group will leave e church s east parking lot at 4:00 PM on Friday, September 13, returning at e very early hours of e morning on Saturday, September 14. Parents can pick eir children up at 9:00 on Saturday morning. Cost is only $32, but students should bring extra money for food, drinks and souvenirs. Also needed are warmer night cloes, and a sleeping bag and pillow for staying overnight at e church. And bring a friend! Money and permission slips are due by Sunday, September 8. Additional information is available from Fr. Paul Gibbons at 732-4821. The retreat begins at 6:00 PM, Friday, October 25, at St. Luke s Anglican Church, Merced. Registration forms are located on e welcome table at e entrance to church and in e church office. Cost is $40. All paperwork must be turned in by Sunday, October 13. Questions may be addressed to Fr. Movie nights are back! Everyone is invited to see Ratatouille at St. Paul s Church on Friday, September 20, at 7:00 PM. The movie will be shown on a large screen in e courtyard so bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on. Popcorn will be provided. This is a totally free night for everyone, so parishioners are encouraged to bring eir whole family and friends. September, 2013 Page 5 Sunday School Classes Begin September 8 Children s Classes Sunday School classes begin on Sunday, September 8. Classes are held each week from 9:30 to 10:15. Grades 1-5 Classes for children in grades 1-5 will be held in e Children s Chapel. Middle School Classes for students in grades 6-8 will be held in Fr. Paul Gibbons office. High School Students in grades 9-12 are invited to be a part of e adult class at meets in Rivera Hall from 9:30 to 10:15. Adult Education An adult forum is held each Sunday morning in Rivera Hall, from 9:30 to 10:15. The schedule is as follows: Sunday, September 8 Ministry Fair (see related article on page 6 in is edition of The Epistle.) Sunday, September 15 Video presentation about e Sequoia Deanery s recently completed medical mission to Peru. Sunday, September 22 Question and answer forum related to e Legal Fund Drive (see related article on front page in is edition of The Epistle.) Sunday, September 29 Fr. James will begin a study of St. Paul s Second Letter to e Corinians. Education The task of e modern educator is not to cut down jungles but to irrigate deserts. C.S. Lewis, The Abolition of Man Wonderful Wednesday Resumes September 11 Evening Holy Communion Beginning Wednesday, September 11, an evening Communion service will be held each Wednesday at 5:30. The service on September 11 will be held in e church, but in following weeks e service will be in Rivera Hall. These services feature contemporary music and a dialogue-style homily. Alough child care is provided, children of all ages are always welcome. Dinner Prepared by Heaven s Kitchen Alough ere will be a pot-luck supper on September 11, on following Wednesdays dinner will be prepared and served by e volunteers of Heaven s Kitchen, led by Manny Lucero. Wednesday dinners are at 6:15. In addition to great food, ere is always engaging conversation and honest-to-goodness fun. There is no charge for dinner, alough donation baskets are passed each week, and parishioners are urged to be generous! Classes and Activities Beginning, September 11, each Wednesday evening at 7:00, ere are classes and programs for all ages. The adult program is as follows: Wednesday, September 11 Video presentation on e 9/11 Memorial at Ground Zero in New York City. Wednesday, September 18 Question and answer forum on e Legal Fund Drive Wednesday, September 25 Fr. James will begin a series of Bible studies focused on e Old Testament Psalms. Sunday, September 8 is an opportunity for parishioners to get answers and learn how to be more involved in service to e church family. The church is having a Ministry Fair in Rivera Hall, wi informational displays from all of e various groups wiin e church, such as e choirs, acolytes, women s groups, foyer groups, Bible study groups, community service committee and oer committees of e church. The fair will be held after bo services, and will include e Sunday school time, as well. Additional information is available by contacting eier Wendy Johns or Betty Blackmon. Relay for Life St. Paul s Church will be involved in Relay for Life to honor cancer survivors, and to help raise money for e American Cancer Society. Team members are needed to collect donations and to sign up to walk for one-hour segments. This year s event will begin at 9:00 AM on Saturday, September 21, and will end at 9:00 AM on Sunday, September 22. The event is being held at Recreation Park, nor Jacob and Center Avenue in Visalia.
