Mallow Union Newsletter St. James' Mallow, St. Mary's Doneraile, St. Mary's Castletownroche October 2011 Rector: Canon Eithne Lynch 022/21473 or 086/2535002 Email: eithnel@eircom.net Website: www.mallow.cork.anglican.org Lay Readers: Olive Buckley 022/24165 Avril Gubbins 022/24267 Confirmation Service By the time you will be reading this we will be just after having our Confirmation Service in Doneraile. This year we have eight candidates Emmanuel Adebisi, Brid Brennan, Sarah Deane, Lucas Jansen, Williams Olawumi, Michael O'Reilly, Angel Sebury and Rachel Wharton. We continue to hold them in our prayers. Sheep s Head Hike Thanks to all who sponsored me on the Sheep s Head Hike. I have sent away 465.00 for Christian Aid. Diana Vegetable Sale Thanks to all who came and bought vegetables at John and Jean Gardiner s on Saturday the 10 th September and stayed for a cup of tea and cake. Over 1,000.00 was raised for Parish Funds. Concert in St. James Again Cor Mhagh Ealla gaves us a wonderful Concert in St. James on the 24 th September. Unfortunately the crowd was small. 500.00 was made on the night for St. James Maintenance Funds. St. James Church Roof As most of you are aware the work on the roof of the church is underway and it would be good if the money from the raffle tickets for the roof repair was returned. So please sell the tickets and return the money as soon as possible.

Harvest Services The first of our Harvest Services was in Castletownroche last Sunday the 25 th September where the speaker was the Revd Denis McCarthy. The collection went for Bishops Appeal and Parish Funds. Then Doneraile is on the 9 th October and the speaker will be the Revd. Elizabeth Hewitt Adair Medothist minister (Collection for Concern and Protest Aid) And Mallow is on the 16 th October speaker Revd. Brian O Rourke (Collection Vincent de Paul). All services are at 3pm. John Reid, Concern: We were privileged at Morning Prayer in Doneraile recently to hear John Reid speaking of his life work. John, who is a brother of Katherine Harold-Barry, is a Project Manager with Concern in North Korea. John started his working life as a Farm Manager, but soon became disillusioned by the huge food surplus in the E.U. of the eighties. As a committed Christian, he felt called to use his expertise to produce food in almost impossible circumstances and where it was greatly needed. He eventually worked with Concern in Afghanistan and Liberia, and is now in North Korea where they battle against extremes of climate, famine, barren terrain, shortage of services and a great lack of personal freedom. John compared Communist North Korea with neighbouring Christian South Korea where there is plenty. He firmly believes that the difference is caused by Christianity being forbidden in the North where Christians live under great threat of imprisonment or even death. Part of the Doneraile Harvest Thanksgiving collection has been allocated to Concern/ Project North Korea. Saturday Bible Club If you are between the age of 4 and 12 and are free on a Saturday morning please come along to Bible Club in St. James Hall Mallow at 11.30am. We are starting back on Saturday 8 th October at 11.30am to 12.45pm. There is a small charge of 1 per child or 2 per family to cover the cost of books and crisps/drink etc. All parents are welcome to join us for a cup of tea/coffee after bible

club. For further information please contact the Rector or Diana Buckley. Mothers Union and Friends Some of our members went to the Festival Service in Castlemartyr Church on Tuesday the 13 th September at 8pm thanks to all involved in arranging this lovely service. Travelling Supper Our next event is our travelling Supper on Saturday the 8 th October starting between 7pm and 8pm. For your starter you come to Mark and Diana Buckley's then you will be given directions to either Thomas and Ann Ladd s or Vivian Wharton s or Canon Eithne and Richard Lynch for your main course. Then for dessert we all meet in St. James Hall, Mallow. Tickets are 15.00 for adults or 10.00 for children. You do not have to be part of the Mothers Union to come to this it is a parish social event. Proceeds are for Mothers Union overseas funds and parish funds. Please book your tickets from Vivian Wharton (086)3900734 or Diana Buckley (086) 1547810 or any other MU member before 2 nd or 3 rd October so that the food can be organised. Bye Buy Childhood Patsy Devoy from Carrigrohane Parish is coming to talk to us on Bye Buy Childhood on Tuesday 18 th October at 8pm in St. James Hall Mallow. Childhood is now treated as a marketing opportunity. But we believe that children should be valued as children, not consumers. How can we challenge this commercialisation of childhood? Mothers' Union has launched a campaign to address this issue. This meeting is open to everyone in the parish so please come along to see what Patsy has to say. Congratulations To Aoife Ladd on winning the Community Involvement Award in The FBD Young Farmer of the Year Awards.

To Patricia Olawumi on opening her new hair dressing supplies shop in Mallow. To Agnieszka and Liam Forde who got married in Poland in August. This was a very emotional time for them as Agnieszka s father was very ill and died three days after the wedding. We pray for her and the rest of the family at this very difficult time. To Karen and Chris Southgate of Kanturk on the safe arrival of their baby girl, Emily Dorothea. To John Coulter on celebrating his 70 th birthday. To celebrate he had a Holy Communion Service in St. James Church Mallow followed by refreshments. Instead of presents he asked for any donations to be given to St. James Maintenance Fund. Thanks to John for arranging this. Adair School Bus As some of you are aware some of the parishioners in Castletownroche are fighting for their school bus to the Adair School in Fermoy to be reinstated. This year our school bus service was withdrawn. Despite having the required 10 eligible children who meet the distance criteria of being 3.2 kms from the school, our school was refused transport because Bus Éireann said that the children did not come from a distinct locality. The unjust nature of this decision infuriates us, and it is a source of great hardship to the committed parents who bring their children great distances to Adair School. At present, we are fighting for the reinstatement of our bus and we badly need your support. Without the bus service our enrolment will suffer and this will inevitably lead to the closure of the school in the future. On Wednesday the 5 th October we will hold an open meeting at Fermoy Adair School to plan a huge protest demonstration for the following week on Monday 10 th Ocober at 11am outside Christ Church, Fermoy. Please come and lend us your support. We will need people to shout, chant, wave banners and hoot horns on the day, but we also need people who will advertise the event and encourage their friends and neighbours to join us, to show that the wider community is interested in the survival of our little community.

John writes: It was wonderful to see a full church on the 17 th September to celebrate with me my 70 th birthday. I just want to thank you all friends and relatives for your support. People were very generous the collection came to over 4000 it was great in these difficult times. Unfortunately it is all spent on work that had to be carried out at St. James, so parishioners we are not out of the woods yet, the fundraising will still have to go on. Alot of money is needed to repair the roof over the church door it is in a very dangerous state and will have to be done. Our Rector Canon Eithne is trying very hard to get a grant I am very grateful to her, we as a Union will have to help each other to maintain our three churchs. None of us like selling tickets but we have to try, if we can't we will have to come up with other ideas of fundraising the roof has to be repaired. I want to say this if we are running concerts in the churchs the parishioners must be seen there it was a bit disappointing at the concert on the 24 th September after Chor Mhagh Ealla Choir offering me a free concert and also gave a donation on the 17 th to the Church. We have to be seen if we want our Church. Thanking you again for your support so far. Yours sincerely, John Coulter
