Do you feel powerless over the stories you see over and over in the media? Reflect on these thoughts. I am not powerless over my own thoughts. I am not powerless over my own heart. I am not powerless over my own feelings. I am not powerless over the pride I take in my prejudice. I am not powerless over the bigotry hidden in my biased opinions. I am not powerless over my own words and deeds. I am not powerless over what I imagine I d like to say or do to my enemies in the local wars being waged in my family, my neighborhood, my workplace. I am not powerless over my capacity to ignore others in need. I am not powerless over my freedom to forgive those who have hurt me. I am not powerless over letting go whatever it might be that keeps me from loving God with all my heart and loving my neighbor as myself. The command to love God and our neighbor is neither mysterious nor remote - it is near. We have only to carry it out right where we are. Jesus taught us Do unto others as you would have them do unto you WEEKLY REFLECTIONS ON THE GOLDEN RULE Be tolerant of others opinions as you would have them be tolerant of yours Forgive others as you would have them forgive you Be kind to others as you have them be kind to you

SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Summertime Reflections on Prayer WHAT IS PRAYER? The raising of one s mind and heart to God in thanksgiving and in praise of His glory. It can also include the requesting of good things from God. It is an act by which one enters into awareness of a loving communion with God. Prayer is the response of faith to the free promise of salvation and also a response of love to the thirst of the only Son of God. - - US Catholic Catechism for Adults - - THE IMPACT OF PRAYER Prayer is the lifeblood of an intimate relationship with the Father. But believers often have questions about its power and effectiveness. Don t hesitate to take your queries to the Lord, dig into Scripture for answers, and seek the counsel of a trusted spiritual mentor. Prayer is too important to neglect. Do you understand what an awesome privilege it is to kneel before the all-powerful Father and know that He listens and will respond? God loves to be good to His children and answer their prayers. Praying is opening the door to the Lord, so that He can do something. If we close the door, God can do nothing! - - Pope Francis - - CHANGING PEOPLE BY PRAYER Prayer is meant to grow us. Every divine encounter holds the possibility or transforming us. Genuine prayer is risky. It changes us. The changes within us are not just for our self. When we leave our place of prayer, the Spirit sends us forth to live as persons of great love. Our heart knows - has faith - that Someone greater than ourselves sends us onward Sometimes our prayers are filled more with doubt than with confidence. We know that for God to answer our requests, our prayers must be in line with His will. However, wondering if we are praying according to His will can trip us up, and faced with the uncertainty, we will occasionally fall silent. God s will is for each of us to have a healthy relationship with Him through His Son Jesus Christ. That means knowing the Father with increasing intimacy and progressively becoming more and more like Jesus. By focusing our prayers on having this type of relationship with the Lord, it becomes easier to know what to pray. Simply find a scripture that tells you something about God s character, and pray that for others and for yourself. The results are: You can pray with confidence because God wants His children to be like Jesus Christ. You can pray expectantly because you know He will work out His will in our lives. You can cooperate with the Holy Spirit while He works to develop the same quality in you. Prayer is not a game of I Spy, where we have to guess when to talk to the Lord or about what. Scripture is full of God s attributes and His desires for our lives. Pick one and start praying. Then watch what God does in response. Prayer gains access to the proud spirit, to the hardened heart, to the unbelieving mind; there are no walls too high or thick for Him to breach. So pray God s will and watch lives change - especially your own. We have included some coloring graphics for those of you who would like to try praying in color. Summer is a great time to experiment with this form of meditative prayer.

JULY 24, 2016 Church Stewardship Our stewardship commitment to support the work of the parish and its ministries shows our appreciation to God for the gifts we have been provided and our willingness to share those gifts. Let us remember the elderly and the sick who in the summer months are often more alone and can be in difficulty. FOR THE RIDE HOME SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Reading I : Genesis 18:20-32 Reading II : Colossians 2:12-14 Gospel : Luke 11:1-13 Question for Children: Prayer is talking with God and listening to God in our hearts.
