Jesus Appeared to the Disciples

BIBLE STUDY In preparation for the Passover feast, Jesus made His triumphal entry to Jerusalem. Jesus went to the temple there. Herod the Great completely rebuilt the temple in 20 18 B.C. as part of his architectural projects. The temple was surrounded by walls and gates, with specific places for Gentiles, women, and men to worship God and offer sacrifices. The temple was a symbol of God s presence among His people. When Jesus entered the Court of the Gentiles, He was furious to see people buying and selling in the temple. Animal sacrifices were required for participation in the temple. For many worshipers traveling from all over the Roman Empire to take part in Passover, it was easier to purchase unblemished animals for sacrificing in the Court of the Gentiles. There, they also exchanged foreign currency for the temple taxes and offerings. So why was Jesus angry at the people? The merchants buying and selling in the temple were treating the temple as a market or bazaar, not like the house of prayer for all nations that God had intended for it to be. (See Isa. 56:7.) The money changers prices were so exorbitant, they were practically robbing the people. (Mark 11:17) On top of that, people were using the temple courts as a shortcut to get to their businesses. The Gentiles who wished to worship God in peace were surrounded by greed and extortion. Jesus threw out the merchants and money changers. He was committed to honoring God and did not believe the temple should be used as a marketplace. The chief priests and the scribes saw what happened, and they wanted to destroy Jesus. (Luke 19:47) These events led up to Jesus death and resurrection, and now we do not need to go to a temple to meet with God. Jesus came as God s presence among us (John 1:14) and to be the final sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins. We gather with the church to worship Him together. SUGGESTED THEME DECORATING IDEAS: Place a few props in the large group area that would be used if a family were preparing to move, such as cardboard boxes, tape rolls, bubble wrap, and packing paper. Simulate packing up the room. Stack empty cardboard boxes at the front of the room. Position a dolly or hand truck to one side. Stack rolls of tape, packing paper, and other moving supplies on a table. Each session, pack away more things in the room. Consider projecting the theme background slide. 1 // SESSION 2 // CYCLE 1 3-5 YEAR OLDS

Leader carries a broom and dustpan, a feather duster, and other cleaning supplies. He or she intermittently cleans various parts of the room.] Leader Ah, much better! [Set down supplies and address the kids.] Welcome back! And if you re new here, welcome! I m so glad you came. I was just cleaning up a bit. You might remember that I m in charge of getting this room ready to move, which is appropriate because I ve been reading a lot lately about some big moves Jesus was making! [Hold up your Bible.] Jesus actually moved around a lot. It seems like He was always traveling from one place to the next. I wonder if He ever had to dust anything like I do. [Pause thoughtfully.] Anyway, Jesus did do some major cleaning, in a sense. That s what we will hear about today. WATCH THE BIBLE STORY (10 MINUTES) Say The Bible is God s Word. God s Word is true. Today s Bible story is in two of the Gospels: Matthew and Mark. The Gospels tell about Jesus life on earth. Show the video or tell the Bible story using the provided storytelling tips. Use the bolded version of the Bible story for young preschoolers. 2 // SESSION 2 // CYCLE 1 3-5 YEAR OLDS OPTIONAL BIBLE STORY SCRIPT Jesus Cleansed the Temple Matthew 21:12-17; Mark 11:15-19 It was time for the Jewish people to celebrate Passover. Jesus, His friends, and many other people went to the city of Jerusalem. Jesus and His disciples went to the temple. The temple was supposed to be a place where people went to worship God, but Jesus saw people doing things they were not supposed to do. Some people were buying and selling animals. Other people were trading money. The temple was not a store! Jesus also saw people carrying things through the temple to get from one side of the city to the other. This was not what God wanted the temple to be used for. How could people pray and worship God with all that noise? Jesus was right to be angry. He turned over the tables and knocked over the chairs of the people who were selling animals and trading money. He told all of those people to leave. The Scriptures say, My house will be called a house of prayer for everyone. But you are making it a place for thieves! He said.

Every day, Jesus went to the temple to teach people about God. People who were blind came to Jesus, and He healed them. People who could not walk came to Jesus, and He healed them too. People were amazed at the things Jesus said and did. Children began shouting in the temple, Hosanna to the Son of David! The word hosanna means Save now! The religious leaders did not like what was happening. They did not like Jesus, and they did not like how everyone else liked Him. The religious leaders wanted to kill Jesus. Do You hear what these children are saying? they asked Jesus. Yes, Jesus said. Have you never read the Scripture that says, You have prepared praise from the mouths of children and babies? Then Jesus left and went to the city of Bethany to spend the night. Timeline Poster Main Point Slide Christ Connection: Jesus made the people in the temple leave. He was right to be angry. The people were keeping others from praying and worshiping God. Jesus came to earth to die on the cross to take away people s sin so they could be friends with God. TALK ABOUT THE BIBLE STORY (1 MINUTE) Big Picture question slides Say The temple was a place to worship God, but Jesus saw people doing things there that kept people from worshiping. Jesus stopped people from misusing the temple. Jesus used the temple in the right way by healing people and teaching them about God. Have the kids answer with either a thumbs up or thumbs down for each question. Point to the Bible story picture as you ask the following review questions: 1. People were using the temple to buy and sell animals, trade money, and using it as a short cut. Was this the right way (thumbs up) or the wrong way (thumbs down) to use the temple? 2. Did this make Jesus happy (up) or angry (down)? 3. What did Jesus do each day in the temple while he was there? Buy animals (up) or teach about God and heal people (down)? 4. Who was shouting, Hosanna to the Son of David! about Jesus? Children (up) or religious leaders (down)? BIG PICTURE QUESTION (1 MINUTE) Say Jesus came to earth to die on the cross to take away people s sin so they could be friends with God. At church, we celebrate a special meal to remember what Jesus did. Our big picture question is about that meal. Why do believers share the Lord s Supper? Believers share the Lord s Supper to remember Jesus Key passage Key Passage song The Spirirt of the Lord song KEY PASSAGE (5 MINUTES) Open your Bible to Luke 4:18. Read the key passage aloud several times. Sing together the key passage song. Say Our key passage tells us that Jesus came to preach the good news. Jesus used the temple in the right way by teaching people the good news about God. Jesus came to earth to make people right with God. PRAYER (2 MINUTES) Invite kids to pray before dismissing to small groups. DISMISS TO SMALL GROUP 3 // SESSION 2 // CYCLE 1 3-5 YEAR OLDS

Welcome children and set out a few favorite theme-related toys, such as puzzles and blocks. Activity Page pencils or markers ACTIVITY PAGE (10 MINUTES) Guide preschoolers to circle the nine images in the picture that do not belong. Say There are many things that do not belong in this picture. Do you know what else does not belong? All the people cutting through, counting money, and buying and selling things! People were treating God s temple like a market instead of the house of prayer God wanted it to be. Listen to hear how Jesus responded to what He saw. 10 minutes after the start of service Break into groups of 10 or less children for Small groups toy cash registers play money plastic animals Cash Register printable (optional) ACTIVITY (10 MINUTES) Play out buying and selling Set out play money and toy cash registers or assemble the Cash Register printable. Guide preschoolers to play out buying and selling. Consider making plastic animals available for preschoolers to play out buying and selling. Say Some people were buying and selling animals in the temple. Other people were trading money. The temple was not a store! The temple was supposed to be a place where people went to worship God, but Jesus saw people doing things they were not supposed to do. 4 // SESSION 2 // CYCLE 1 3-5 YEAR OLDS

SNACK TIME Gather preschoolers for snack time. Thank God for the snack. Remind preschoolers that people were using the temple in a way it was not meant to be used. Jesus stopped people from misusing the temple. The people were keeping others from praying and worshiping God. TRANSITION When a child finishes his snack, guide him to throw away any trash. He may select a book or puzzle to examine, play quietly with toys, or color the Journal coloring page. crayons Journal Page JOURNAL PAGE AND PRAYER Offer the journal page and invite preschoolers to draw a picture of themselves praying. Remind preschoolers that the temple was supposed to be a place for people to pray and worship. Pray for the children. Say God, thank You for sending Jesus to earth to die on the cross to take away people s sin so they could be friends with You. Give us hearts to worship You and Your Son. Amen. While preschoolers might not be ready to respond to the gospel, use this guide to help little minds begin to grasp big truths about Jesus and the kingdom of God. GOD IS KING. Ask: Who is in charge at home? Who is in charge over the whole world? Explain that God made everything! He is King over everything, and He is in charge. WE SINNED. Ask: Have you ever done something wrong? Tell preschoolers that everyone sins, or disobeys God. Our sin makes God sad. GOD SENT JESUS. Explain that God must punish sin. He loves us and He sent His Son, Jesus, to earth. Jesus came to take away the punishment for sin. JESUS LOVES. Ask: Do you like presents? Explain that Jesus gives us the best present. He never did anything wrong, but He was punished in our place. Jesus wants to take away our sin because He loves us. Pray that God will save your preschoolers. As you faithfully teach the Bible, you are planting gospel seeds in children s hearts. Ask God to grow the preschoolers into children who love and trust in Jesus. THE GOSPEL: GOD S PLAN FOR ME Use Scripture and the guide provided in the classroom to explain to boys and girls how to become a Christian. Assign individuals to meet with kids who have more questions. If this is not possible, encourage boys and girls to ask their parents, leader, or other Christian adults any questions they may have about becoming a Christian.
