Andrew s homilies this past year. Setting aside time each day to nourish our relationship with the living and true God is foundational to our continued conversion. Prayer and the Christian life go hand in hand. Like many, I battle distractions and sometimes prayer feels arduous. There are many examples of the Saints that teach us how vital persistence is even when we aren t feeling it. In an effort to overcome this, sometimes we need to mix things up. Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual songs can be great tools. The Psalms are an essential part of the prayer of the Church. These songs were prayed by and fulfilled by Jesus Christ. They express the universal themes of our longing and desire for God. They express our trust in the Lord s desire for only our good. Is it any wonder that composers throughout the ages have looked to the Psalms for inspiration? Praying with music can be as simple as having our favorite Christian music playing in the background while we do the dishes. A lyric might catch us and elevate our heart and mind to God (the essence of prayer). We can also be more deliberate than this and bring music into our time set apart for prayer. Print or write out the lyrics to your favorite hymn or contemporary Christian songs. If you can t think of one start with Amazing Grace. Find a quiet place to slowly read the lyrics. What words or phrases stand out for you? Close your eyes and speak these words aloud or in your heart. Turn on a recording of the song. Allow the music and words to wash over you. If it is a worship song, open your hands as you open your heart. If it is a lament, let your pain be released to the Father that loves you and knows your suffering. Let your heart, mind, and soul love and be loved by God. Amen. Scott Thomas Amazing Grace Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, That saved a wretch like me... I once was lost but now am found, Was blind, but now, I see. T was Grace that taught...my heart to fear. And Grace, my fears relieved. How precious did that Grace appear...the hour I first believed. Through many dangers, toils and snares...we have already come. T'was Grace that brought us safe thus far...and Grace will lead us home. The Lord has promised good to me...his word my hope secures. He will my shield and portion be...as long as life endures. When we've been here ten thousand years...bright shining as the sun. We've no less days to sing God's praise...then when we've first begun. Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, That saved a wretch like me... I once was lost but now am found, Was blind, but now, I see. John Newton

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, I will praise you, Lord, with all my heart; I will declare all your wondrous deeds. I will delight and rejoice in you; I will sing hymns to your name, Most High. Psalm 9:2-3 Indeed my soul is filled with joy and gratefulness to our loving God for the many blessings God has given to my ministry and to the people I am called to serve. I am also thankful to all who prayed for me and for all 58 candidates--now Cursillistas, who attended the Cursillo weekend at St. Francis Retreat Center last week. It was amazing to see the work of God through those who served the weekend as well as those who attended. All in all, it was a very fruitful and gracious weekend. Please be reminded that our English Speaking Cursillo weekend for Men will be held this October 6-9 and the Women s is October 20-23. I highly encourage men and women from our parish to heed this gracious opportunity to renew and immerse in God s love and grace. I am also very grateful to God and to our Holy Family Community for the over flowing and generous support of our 5 projects. As of now, we have received $210,298.73. This is truly a sign of grace through our community s generosity, which will allow us to follow through on all five projects accordingly. Words can t convey enough of my appreciation. In short, thank you very much to everyone who contributed through prayers and monetary gifts. Upon completion of the five projects, any surplus will be used to beautify our Murphy Meadow s ground and open it up to make it much more welcoming. From the bottom of my heart, I would like to utter the following words, which St. Paul put so beautifully, You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God. This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God. 2 Cor 9:11-12 May God continue to bless our wonderful community, especially enlighten our mind and hearts in loving Him all the more. You re all-too aware of the upcoming elections but, like most people, are overwhelmed by the number of propositions, some of which contradict each other. The Voter Registration booth will have information about CA Catholic Council of Bishops webpages where you can find many of the propositions, plus what they re about AND how their passage would fit into Catholic teachings. The booth will also have voter registration forms, in case you haven t registered or need to change your name, address, or political party. You DO want to vote, of course, because it s our Catholic duty to see that just, fair laws get enacted. There, too, you ll find a list of books and films available from our Lending Library on a variety of faith-inaction topics. And details about how you can use your social media to be part of the #End45 campaign. There will be a box there for you to contribute an item for our annual Survival Sacks for the Homeless (http:// holyfamilysanjose.org/survival-sacksfor-homeless tells you what we still need.) Holy Family Finance Advisory Council A big thank you to Diane Giannini for her 10 years as a Finance Advisory Council member, and most recently as Chair. She has faithfully responded to her call. Diane s term is up and she will be stepping down. Our parish is in debt to Diane for all of her sacrifices and gracious dedication. May God continue to bless her. Alan Russ has agreed to lead the Council as Chairperson. His term will be through July 2018. Thank you, Allen, for taking on this responsibility. Questions? Please contact the Faith Formation office As its first goal, faith formation helps adults "to acquire an attitude of conversion to the Lord."This attitude fosters a baptismal spirituality for adults. It leads them to recognize and repent of sin in their hearts and lives, to seek reconciliation through the sacraments, and to embrace the invitation and challenge of an ever-deepening faith in Jesus. It means putting on the mind of Christ, trusting in the Father's love, obeying God's will, seeking holiness of life, and growing in love for others. Deepening personal prayer is a significant means toward growth in holiness in daily life. --- United States Conference of Catholic Bishops
