1 KINGS SOLOMON TO CIVIL WAR First Kings continues the story of Israel s monarchy, tracing the reign of Solomon, the division of the kingdom, as well as the lives of prophets and kings from both the northern and southern kingdoms.

1 KINGS - SOLOMON TO CIVIL WAR During the United Kingdom period, David and Solomon penned their most exquisite spiritual poetry, including portions of Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Song of Solomon. Under their influence, the twelve tribes grew into a single powerful nation that flourished in many ways: Military Economy Boundaries

WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT SOLOMON? Second child born to David and Bathsheba. Was named king of Israel when David passed away. Built the temple that David always wanted to build. Was known as the wisest man in the world at the time. Had 700 wives, 300 mistresses, some of whom were foreign women.

KEY VERSE 1 KINGS 11:1-4 King Solomon, however, loved many foreign women besides Pharaoh s daughter Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians and Hittites. They were from nations about which the LORD had told the Israelites, You must not intermarry with them, because they will surely turn your hearts after their gods. Nevertheless, Solomon held fast to them in love. He had seven hundred wives of royal birth and three hundred concubines, and his wives led him astray. As Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods, and his heart was not fully devoted to the LORD his God, as the heart of David his father had been.

STRUCTURE AND FLOW 1 KINGS SOLOMON IN SPLENDOR CH. 1-10 Ch. 1-4 Crowned and married Ch. 5-8 Temple erected Ch. 9-10 Warning from God

KEY VERSE 1 KINGS 9:6-7 But if you or your descendants turn away from me and do not observe the commands and decrees I have given you and go off to serve other gods and worship them, then I will cut off Israel from the land I have given them and will reject this temple I have consecrated for my Name. Israel will then become a byword and an object of ridicule among all peoples.

STRUCTURE AND FLOW 1 KINGS SOLOMON IN SPLENDOR CH. 1-10 A KINGDOM DIVIDED CH. 12-22 Ch. 1-4 Crowned and married Ch. 5-8 Temple erected Ch. 12-14 Rehoboam and Jeroboam Ch. 9-10 Warning from God

REHOBOAM AND JEROBOAM Rehoboam and Jeroboam were both kings reigning in Israel s divided kingdom. Rehoboam was one of Solomon s sons and king of Judah in the south. Jeroboam was one of Solomon s former officials, an Ephraimite, and king of Israel in the north.

STRUCTURE AND FLOW 1 KINGS SOLOMON IN SPLENDOR CH. 1-10 A KINGDOM DIVIDED CH. 12-22 Ch. 1-4 Crowned and married Ch. 5-8 Temple erected Ch. 9-10 Warning from God Ch. 12-14 Rehoboam and Jeroboam Ch. 15-16 Civil war

KEY TERMS ISRAEL AND JUDAH Israel In the divided kingdom Israel refers to the northern kingdom. Judah In the divided kingdom Judah refers to the southern kingdom.

KEY VERSES 1 KINGS 15:9-10, 15:25-26 In the twentieth year of Jeroboam king of Israel, Asa became king of Judah, and he reigned in Jerusalem forty-one years. His grandmother s name was Maakah daughter of Abishalom. Nadab son of Jeroboam became king of Israel in the second year of Asa king of Judah, and he reigned over Israel two years. He did evil in the eyes of the LORD, following the ways of his father and committing the same sin his father had caused Israel to commit.

STRUCTURE AND FLOW 1 KINGS SOLOMON IN SPLENDOR CH. 1-10 A KINGDOM DIVIDED CH. 12-22 Ch. 1-4 Crowned and married Ch. 5-8 Temple erected Ch. 9-10 Warning from God Ch. 12-14 Rehoboam and Jeroboam Ch. 15-16 Civil war Ch. 17-22 Ahab and Elijah

AHAB THE KING AND ELIJAH THE PROPHET Ahab was the eighth king of Israel and married the Sidonian named Jezebel.

KEY VERSE 1 KINGS 16:33 Ahab did more to provoke the Lord, the God of Israel, to anger than all the kings of Israel who were before him.

AHAB THE KING AND ELIJAH THE PROPHET Ahab was the eighth king of Israel and married the Sidonian named Jezebel. During the reign of Ahab and Queen Jezebel, at the height of Baal worship in Israel, God directly confronted the paganism through his prophet Elijah.

PERSONAL APPLICATION - SOLOMON We are most vulnerable to temptation when we least expect it Solomon fell at the height of his success. And so can we. Past spiritual and material achievements do not guarantee future faithfulness. We must constantly depend on God s guidance.

PERSONAL APPLICATION - ELIJAH God always has the right person to match the hour there will always be Ahab s. But God always has an Elijah. No matter how great the wickedness of this world, God will not allow his righteousness to be snuffed out.
