For in Scripture it says: See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trust in him will never be put to shame. 1Peter 2:6 a monthly publication of Windsor Spring Baptist Church Reaching Others Our Goal September 2010 Volume: 33 Issues: 9
From the Pastor How many people do you know who used to go to church, but just don t anymore? If you are like most people, we all know someone who used to go to church but we have not seen them in a service in a long time. According to the book American Church in Crisis by David T. Olson, Most Americans have been to church, and yet only 20 percent are regular attendees. Dr. Gary L. McIntosh from the Talbot School of Theology at Biola University estimates more than 76 million people have attended church at least once in their lifetime. Clearly, most people who do not currently attend church did attend at one time. Many of these people might be willing to try church again, given the right opportunity. In fact, research shows that 82% of unchurched people are open to attending a church if invited by a friend, and yet only 2% of churchgoers invited someone to church in the past year. That is why Windsor Spring is participating in Back to Church Sunday on September 12 th. Back to Church Sunday provides the perfect opportunity for people to rediscover church and for those in church to take the opportunity to invite them. The campaign is based on a simple idea: if you ask un-churched people to come with you to church, most likely they'll say yes. Statistics show that most people who don t or no longer attend church simply haven t made time for it as Mark Batterson puts it, Many de-churched people are a simple re-invitation away! Back to Church Sunday is designed to be that opportunity. It is a special service dedicated to people who do not regularly attend church, a time when those who have left the church are encouraged to return and give it another try. We are going to be sending out postcards to the community to encourage people to give church another try. So here s how you can be involved: 1. Begin praying now for the person you would like to invite to come to Back to Church Sunday, on September 12 th. 2. Take a risk and ask that person to come to church with you. 3. Be willing to show up early on Back to Church Sunday to help with the special refreshments that we will have for our guests. A sign-up sheet will be in the foyer of the sanctuary beside the water fountain. Let s work together and reach South Augusta for Christ, but it all starts with a simple invitation to come to church. I want to leave you with the words of the Apostle Paul. for, Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news! Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ. Romans 10:13-15 (NIV) Sing to the LORD, all the earth; proclaim his salvation day after day. Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples. (1 Chronicle 16:23-24). I love this time of year, don t you hear it it s the sound of Christmas. Well, maybe not for you but for the music ministry, Christmas is definitely the sound we hear. God Coming Down is our musical for this year and it s traditional mixed with contemporary. The traditional Carols that are so loved are interspersed with the new sounds of today leaving you plenty of opportunities to sing along. But I have an even better option! Why not just join us to sing the entire piece getting first hand knowledge of the songs before they are done in December. It gives you an opportunity to connect with the sounds of Christmas while Connecting with God Himself, WORSHIP! Four months in advance! It doesn t get much better, a chance to use your gifts for the Glory of God while having an opportunity to fellowship with other like minded believers. It becomes a family of its own. So maybe you ve been looking for a place to get connected, a small group that you can get to know personally. Look no further than the choir! I promise you times of laughter, tears, and an indescribable joy as we minister to one another and to our congregation. No advance musical training is required. All that is needed is a servant s heart and an open mind. See you Sunday at 4PM! Teresa Oh and don t forget WAM for the kids. They too, will hear the sounds of Christmas early as they work on their own musical for presentation the first week of December. I will sing to the LORD, for he has been good to me.
