Christmas is different than any other holiday in that it is centered around giving. Retail stores can expect as much as 30% of their annual sales to take place between Thanksgiving and Christmas. I heard an amazing story about giving today on the radio. The news was centered on the passing of our 41st President, George H.W. Bush. They were talking about his character and how he was so sensitive to the needs of others. They told the story of when he was in office as our president, instead of flying to his home and family in Texas for Christmas, he chose to stay at the White House. His reason? This allowed his staff to enjoy the holiday with their families instead of fulfilling their duties to travel with him. The greatest gifts are those that come out of our sacrifice and not out of our abundance. The fact that he made such a sacrifice is even more remarkable considering he held the highest office in our land! In my short time as the Transitional Pastor I have learned that our church family is a very generous group of people! First came the unsolicited donations that provided journals for our church family in September. Then in October, we received donations that provided for our new church sign. On Sunday, December 2, the 49 Giving Tree Ornaments (providing Christmas for a child) were gone so quickly that many of you were disappointed! Even today I received a call from someone who wanted to sponsor 10 children! The response has been so strong that next year we will look to expand our Giving Tree Ornaments, perhaps even doubling our efforts! Gift giving all started with God s gift to mankind in the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. At the very heart of Christianity is love. And love is best displayed through giving. We can give through our prayers, our time, our talents and our finances. I love the fact that our church not only gives at Christmas but consistently throughout the year. One way we do that is through supporting missions. This year we will once again be receiving a Christ Birthday Offering. It is our desire to receive the funds needed for the many missions we support throughout the year as well as provide some of the funding to send out mission teams in 2019. In case you weren t aware we support several missions including: Children of Promise, Heart to Hondurus, Church of God Ministries, Florida Church of God Ministries, La Monta de Luz, Mission Aviation Fellowship, and Willing Servant Ministries. We will be receiving our Christ Birthday offering on Sunday, December 23rd but you can give online or any other Sunday as well. Just be sure to earmark it for the Christ Birthday Offering. I encourage you to consider the offering/gift you will make that is above and beyond your tithe. How exciting to think that the gifts we bring to our Christ Birthday offering will support our ministries throughout 2019 both here and across the world. Merry Christmas, Pastor Gary Garmon Transitional Pastor
