Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Hainesport, New Jersey Page 3-565 Message from the Padre L ast Sunday's Gospel was about the Prodigal Son who demanded his share of his father's wealth and then went out and squandered it all. This weekend we have the parable of the Dishonest Steward, or sometimes called the parable of the Unrighteous Steward, who embellished the accounts of his master's books in order to win friends. M y dear friends, people have always been puzzled over the parable of the unjust steward. It seems like Jesus is endorsing cheating or dishonesty or commending the dishonest steward for his unrighteousness! But clearly, Jesus is not commending cheating or dishonesty... but he is giving us an example of the wicked steward s zealous foresight or his PRUDENCE in the midst of a crisis. That is to say that Jesus admired his clever thinking of coming up with a solution and taking advantage on the spur of the moment to do something instead of nothing. The Catechism of the Catholic Church defines Prudence as: "A virtue that disposes practical reason to discern our true good in every life and to choose the right means of achieving it." In short, "The prudent man looks ahead where he is going." Just like the unrighteous man...he has a foresight he is clever, knowing, shrewd and prudent. This seems to me, the point of today s parable and why Jesus was commending this dishonest man to our attention. Jesus is telling us that we can learn from him, not in copying his immoral ways, but in applying the same amount of cleverness and using it to a higher purpose in planning for our life. J esus said in our Gospel this weekend that, No servant can serve two masters. He will either hate one or love the other... you cannot serve both God and mammon. Mammon stands for material wealth or possessions that we value more than God. Yes, in today s world, we can be ruled by many different things the love of money, the power of position, the glamour of beauty and prestige, and lure of addictions. We should always remember that there is one and only one God who has the power to set us free from the slavery of sin. Yes, Jesus last words are very demanding: You cannot serve both God and mammon...and the decision is left to us. Fr. Twenty Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Am 8: 4-7, 1 Tm 2: 1-8 Lk 16: 1-13 What an indictment in the first reading of those who are wealthy and use that wealth to take advantage of the poor! But then along comes Jesus, who points out that wealth can be used for good ends as well. Jesus says that we cannot pretend that we don t live in the world with others, so we need to find ways to advance the reign of God using the tools at our disposal. As we listen to today s sacred scriptures, what word do you hear God saying to you about your possessions here and now and how God wants you to use them?
