EPIPHANY JANUARY 6, 2019 TODAY'S WORSHIP Divine Service I LSB pages 151-166 L = Liturgist * = Stand C = Congregation PRELUDE 8:00 & 10:30 Bells of Peace In The Bleak Midwinter We Three Kings CRANHAM arr: Cynthia Dobriski WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS *OPENING HYMN The Old Year Now Hath Passed Away TLH 125 1. The old year now hath passed away; We thank Thee, O our God, today That Thou hast kept us through the year When danger and distress were near. 2. We pray Thee, O eternal Son, Who with the Father reign st as One, To guard and rule Thy Christendom Through all the ages yet to come. 3. Take not Thy saving Word away, Our souls true comfort, staff, and stay. Abide with us and keep us free From errors, foll wing only Thee. 4. Oh, help us to forsake all sin, A new and holier course begin! Mark not what once was done amiss; A happier, better year be this. *INVOCATION AND GENERAL CONFESSION L: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. L: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C: But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. L: Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C: Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. *THE ABSOLUTION *THE KYRIE L: In peace let us pray to the Lord. C: Lord, have mercy. L: For the peace from above and for our salvation let us pray to the Lord. C: Lord, have mercy. L: For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all let us pray to the Lord. C: Lord, have mercy.

L: For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise let us pray to the Lord. C: Lord, have mercy. L: Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord. *THE COLLECT OF THE DAY L: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. L: Let us pray. THE OLD TESTAMENT READING for the Epiphany of our Lord is from Isaiah 60:1-6, pages 619-620: (5:00, 8:00 & 10:30) 1 Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD has risen upon you. 2 For behold, darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the LORD will arise upon you, and his glory will be seen upon you. 3 And nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising. 4 Lift up your eyes all around, and see; they all gather together, they come to you; your sons shall come from afar, and your daughters shall be carried on the hip. 5 Then you shall see and be radiant; your heart shall thrill and exult, because the abundance of the sea shall be turned to you, the wealth of the nations shall come to you. 6 A multitude of camels shall cover you, the young camels of Midian and Ephah; all those from Sheba shall come. They shall bring gold and frankincense, and shall bring good news, the praises of the LORD. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. THE EPISTLE READING is from Ephesians 3:6-12, page 977: 6 This mystery is that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel. 7 Of this gospel I was made a minister according to the gift of God's grace, which was given me by the working of his power. 8 To me, though I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given, to reach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, 9 and to bring to light for everyone what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things, 10 so that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. 11 This was according to the eternal purpose that he has realized in Christ Jesus our Lord, 12 in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through our faith in him. L: This is the Word of the Lord. *ALLELUIA AND VERSE C: Alleluia Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Alleluia, alleluia. *THE HOLY GOSPEL - according to St. Matthew, the second chapter, verses 1-12, pages 807-808: C: Glory to you, O Lord. 1 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, 2 saying, Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him. 3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; 4 and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. 5 They told him, In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet: 6 And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel. 7 Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared. 8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him. 9 After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11 And going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. 12 And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.

L: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. *THE CREED (Luther s Explanation of the 3rd Article) I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him but the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith. In the same way He calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian church on earth, and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one true faith. In this Christian church He daily and richly forgives all my sins and the sins of all believers. On the Last Day He will raise me and all the dead, and give eternal life to me and all believers in Christ. This is most certainly true. Amen. SERMON HYMN Father, Let Me Dedicate TLH 118 1. Father, let me dedicate All this year to Thee, In whatever earthly state Thou wilt have me be. Not from sorrow, pain, or care Freedom dare I claim; This alone shall be my prayer: Glorify Thy name. 2. Can a child presume to choose Where or how to live? Can a father s love refuse All the best to give? More Thou givest every day Than the best can claim Nor withholdest aught that may Glorify Thy name. 3. If in mercy Thou wilt spare Joys that yet are mine: If on life, serene and fair, Brighter rays may shine, Let my glad heart while it sings, Thee in all proclaim And, whate er the future brings, Glorify Thy name. THE SERMON Adoration of the Magi (Matthew 2:11-12) THE OFFERING - During the offering all worshipers are asked to fill out the blue or ivory cards found in the pew rack.
