CALAMUS LUTHERAN PARISH Our Savior's Lutheran Church 8:00 a.m. Faith Lutheran Church 10:30 a.m. Third Sunday of Advent December 11, 2016 Welcome in Jesus name. Please consider using the prelude as a time for meditation and silent prayer. This is the ideal time for quiet preparation, as we come to worship God. Holy Communion is celebrated today. All who are baptized into Christ Jesus are invited forward to receive Holy Communion. Those not communing may come forward to receive a blessing. Prelude Ringing of the Bell Welcome and Announcements HOLY COMMUNION Evangelical Lutheran Worship, Setting 10, page 203 (* Please stand if you are able) (At Faith) CHOIR: "We Are Waiting" by Albrecht and Wesley and "Prepare Ye the Way" by Page and Shafferman *ADVENT LITANY P: Darkness and sin surround us on all sides. C: Prepare our dark hearts for the coming of the Christ child, who brings the light of eternal life and the forgiveness of sins. (To the tune of "Oh, Come, Oh, Come, Emmanuel") My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus' blood and righteousness; no merit of my own I claim but wholly lean on Jesus' name. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to you, O Israel. P: The Lord my God lights up my darkness. C: To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul. O my God, in you I trust. 1

When darkness veils his lovely face, I rest on his unchanging grace; in every high and stormy gale, my anchor holds within the veil. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to you, O Israel. P: Once you walked in darkness, but now you walk in the light of Jesus Christ. C: Enlighten the eyes of our hearts, that we may know the hope to which we are called and the riches of our glorious inheritance. When he shall come with trumpet sound, oh, may I then in him be found, clothed in his righteousness alone, redeemed to stand before the throne! Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to you, O Israel. P: The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light; and they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them has the light shined. (Isaiah 9:2) C: Amen *PRAYER OF THE DAY P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Stir up the wills of all who look to you, Lord God, and strengthen our faith in your coming, that, transformed by grace, we may walk in your way; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen (At Our Savior's) CHOIR: "We Are Waiting" by Albrecht and Wesley and "Prepare Ye the Way" by Page and Shafferman WORD First Reading: Isaiah 35:1 10 L: A reading from Isaiah. The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad, the desert shall rejoice and blossom; 2

like the crocus it shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice with joy and singing. The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it, the majesty of Carmel and Sharon. They shall see the glory of the LORD, the majesty of our God. Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees. Say to those who are of a fearful heart, "Be strong, do not fear! Here is your God. He will come with vengeance, with terrible recompense. He will come and save you." Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; then the lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongue of the speechless sing for joy. For waters shall break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert; the burning sand shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water; the haunt of jackals shall become a swamp, the grass shall become reeds and rushes. A highway shall be there, and it shall be called the Holy Way; the unclean shall not travel on it, but it shall be for God's people; no traveler, not even fools, shall go astray. No lion shall be there, nor shall any ravenous beast come up on it; they shall not be found there, but the redeemed shall walk there. And the ransomed of the LORD shall return, and come to Zion with singing; everlasting joy shall be upon their heads; they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away. L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. 3

Psalm 146:5 10 Happy are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD their God, who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them; who keeps faith forever; who executes justice for the oppressed; who gives food to the hungry. The LORD sets the prisoners free; the LORD opens the eyes of the blind. The LORD lifts up those who are bowed down; the LORD loves the righteous. The LORD watches over the strangers; he upholds the orphan and the widow, but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin. The LORD will reign forever, your God, O Zion, for all generations. Praise the LORD! Second Reading: James 5:7 10 L: A reading from James. Be patient, therefore, beloved, until the coming of the Lord. The farmer waits for the precious crop from the earth, being patient with it until it receives the early and the late rains. You also must be patient. Strengthen your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is near. Beloved, do not grumble against one another, so that you may not be judged. See, the Judge is standing at the doors! As an example of suffering and patience, beloved, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. L: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. * GOSPEL ACCLAMATION: Light One Candle to Watch for Messiah (The tune is found in ELW Hymn 240. During the singing, the acolyte will light three candles of the Advent wreath.) Light three candles to watch for Messiah: let the light banish darkness. Lift your heads and lift high the gate-way for the King of glory. 4

*P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew the eleventh chapter. C: Glory to you, O Lord. Gospel: 11:2 11 When John heard in prison what the Messiah was doing, he sent word by his disciples and said to him, "Are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?" Jesus answered them, "Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have good news brought to them. And blessed is anyone who takes no offense at me." As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: "What did you go out into the wilderness to look at? A reed shaken by the wind? What then did you go out to see? Someone dressed in soft robes? Look, those who wear soft robes are in royal palaces. What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is the one about whom it is written, 'See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.' Truly I tell you, among those born of women no one has arisen greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. P: The Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. CHILDREN'S SERMON Pastor William Runaas, Jr. Noisy Offering SERMON Pastor William Runaas, Jr. Silence for reflection "For unto us a child is born unto us a son is given, and the government shall be upon his shoulders; and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, the Mighty God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace." - Isaiah 9:6 *HYMN OF THE DAY: "Hark the Glad Sound" Hymn 239 5

*CONFESSION OF FAITH P: Using the words of the Nicene Creed let us confess our holy faith: We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again from the dead, in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION (Each petition ends with P: Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer.) *PEACE P: The peace of Christ be with you always. C: And also with you. 6

MEAL OFFERING PRESENTATION OF THE GIFTS *OFFERTORY PRAYER P: Let us pray. C: Savior of the nations, come. Make your home here in us. Feed us with your love, that our faith shine ever new and our lives reveal your light. Amen. *GREAT THANKSGIVING - page 206 P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give our thanks and praise. P: It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise we praise your name and join their unending hymn: C: Holy, holy, holy Lord, - page 207 *WORDS OF INSTITUTION *LORD S PRAYER P: Lord, remember us in your kingdom, and teach us to pray: C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. INVITATION TO COMMUNION P: Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to you. Share in the feast of salvation.
