From the Pastor s Desk H aving just returned from England and Wales I have had some time to think about some of the things that I encountered and experienced. One of the first things that struck me was how blessed I have been in my life to have traveled to the places I have. The encounters with the peoples and the cultures in such places like China, Korea, Spain, Mexico, South Africa and now Wales and England has been so enriching. It certainly would be something I would wish for everyone. One particular experience this time was getting to sing in a church that was a thousand years old. One of the unique features of the church was the Frescos that were painted on the walls of the chancel. A thousand years old, they had at one time been painted over. They have been re-discovered as paint began to peel. They are in the process of being restored, but the artistry is readily apparent. Singing a song from the Renaissance in a space where it was originally conceived was a special moment. But what struck me the most was that on that spot for over 1000 years, the Word of God has been spoken and proclaimed. The thought is amazing. We are not yet 55 years old as a congregation, and here I was in this place. In addition there was another place where Christians had been present since 400 A.D. when the Roman Empire began to dissolve and the Romans left the British Isles. It got me to thinking Will there be a Christian presence on this spot we call Faith Lutheran a thousand years from now? Fifty years from now? Twenty years from now? Will God s Word continue to be proclaimed in this place? I realize that is a pretty serious subject, yet it is a thought that should be a challenge and a joy to us. A challenge in the sense that each of us is being called upon by God to be witnesses for Him. We have a challenge to do everything we can to make sure that God s presence remains a vital part of the history of this part of God s world. We need to be involved in finding ways to continue spreading God s love and grace to all that we see and speak to about the power of God in our lives. The joy is to think that maybe, just maybe, a thousand years from now, there will be people whose lives are being touched by the Grace of God, because we had the foresight to establish and sustain a place of worship and reverence for God in this part of His creation known as Huntington Beach. (Continued on page 3)

Page 3 To be sure, Huntington Beach may not be as glamorous as a little village named Chalgrove, but it is here that God has placed us and it is here that we are called upon to share His word and grace with others. May what we do here be remembered a thousand years from now and for eternity. May God continue to bless us as we seek to do His will in this place. Page 5 Calling all students entering 6 th, 7 th, and 8 th grade! Beginning June 28 th, we are going to start having a weekly gathering in the youth room for students who are interested in going deeper with their faith. The mission of Faith Lutheran Church is to know God s grace and make it known. As a ministry of Faith, the vision behind a weekly youth gathering will be the same. Jesus says in John 13:34-35, A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another. One of the ways in which the outside world recognizes God s presence inside of us is when we display love for each other. When true love, the kind of love that the Father has for us, is demonstrated in a love-starved world, it has a magnetic effect. Our hope is that the ministries of Faith would embody the Father s love so that others would accept the invitation to become a part of God s family. Our weekly youth gathering should be no different. Faith s youth ministry will embrace five core values in seeking to carry out the mission of knowing God s grace and making it known. The first is that we can actually know God the Father through relationship with Jesus. The second is that growing as disciples means increasingly learning how to follow Jesus in our culture today. This includes learning about the person of Jesus, learning about His message and ministry, becoming agents for His kingdom, and fostering a place where passion, zeal, boldness, and creativity are encouraged. The third is believing that others can encounter God through us, the Church, as Jesus body on earth. The fourth is valuing actions that intentionally lead to genuine community. Some of the expected fruit of this will be joy, warmth, proactive love, and friendships. The fifth is putting a premium on prayer, worship, and Scripture study. We seek to become people who enjoy communion with God through these. If these things sound like something you want to be a part of, then join us on Wednesday nights from 6:30pm 8pm for a weekly gathering that will include a combination of community-building activities and devotional time. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Spencer at spencer@faithhb.org.

Greetings! We are having so much fun this summer! In July we had a Pinocchio Puppet Show put on by Pullin Strings, we learned new dance moves from the Rhthym n Dance Company, experienced Tae Kwon Do, and had a Bubble onsite field trip visit. We look forward to this month and attending VBS! Hero Central At Hero Central kids will enjoy an interactive, energizing, Bible based good time as they discover their strength in God. They will become Heroes and explore how to serve God and God s mission for their lives. Vacation Bible School is July 31 st August 4 th from 9:00am 12:00 noon. Our older preschool children love attending VBS to learn about Jesus and participate in all the fun activities. Miss Callie s and Miss Cheryl s classes will be attending this year. The fun continues after VBS with Art Camp with special guest artist Mickie Reinertson. This month we say goodbye to our 2017 Child of Faith graduates. We send them off with God s love and blessings. Please pray for Child of Faith and our children as we end this school year and get ready for the new year. In His Service, Callie Paesano

Page 7 BOLSA CHICA WETLANDS VISITS OUR PRESCHOOL Our preschool celebrates the ocean every June. This year it was topped off on Wednesday June 28 th with a visit by the people from the Bolsa Chica Conservancy. We have had them for the past several years and they always do a great job. These people are very good at working with young children. A few of us big kids enjoyed the program as well. They arrived this year with their van with its large fish tank. It contained a large array of creatures including star fish, sea cucumbers, clams, mussels and a variety other creatures. The most popular was the real live sharks. They also provided pelts of several animals such as a rabbit, squirrel, and coyote for the children to touch. And then there was Elizabeth, a fairly large live King Snake who recently replaced Rosie who passed on after many years. All the children had the opportunity to pet it as well. It s always interesting to see the various reactions of the children when given the opportunity to touch or hold the various creatures. Most touch or hold willingly. A few, usually boys, want absolutely no part of that. And a few, usually girls, really would like to but can t move their fingers that last inch before it s yuck, no way. The children were also given some fabric, stencils of fish and star fish, and fabric paint to participate in a craft to take home at the end of the day. Several actually turned out to be quite good. Maybe we have some future artists among our students. This was the first of several programs and in-house field trips our preschool will be conducting this summer. Programs such as these make our preschool the special place it is. Your preschool board thanks all of you for your continued support. Tom Loppnow

Page 8 Greetings, Faith family! One of the phrases that I have seen circulating this community is that Faith Lutheran Church is a birthplace of ministry. That phrase is proving true again as a few of us are excited to announce a new worship opportunity coming in late August. With the transformation of the youth room into a more comfortable, living room-type atmosphere, we d like to start utilizing that space to strengthen the relationships of our community and worship together in a more relaxed posture. On Friday, August 25 th from 7pm to 9pm in the youth room, we will host our first ever Coffee & Community Night. There will be a chance to fellowship with one another as well as a time for acoustic contemporary worship and prayer. The hope is that this will be a platform for getting to know one another and be refreshed in God s presence in a new way. Family gatherings tend to have an informal and organic feel expect this to be very similar. Come with a joyful and expectant heart! The invitation is open to any and all. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Spencer Behmlander at spencer@faithhb.org. Looking forward to seeing you there!
