Welcome! Welcome to worship! Jesus promises that we will see greater things this winter and spring as we study the Gospel of John. In the very beginning of John, the disciples ask Jesus where he is staying and Jesus says, Come and see. As we follow the words of John s Gospel, we will see that God chooses to stay with us, even under some very surprising circumstances. Women are at the heart of God s story today. Parents, you can find canvas activity bags for your children in the back of the sanctuary. For infants up through age three, the nursery is available. Thank you for joining us today. We welcome you! You are also invited to take an Announcements sheet here at Easter, or visit easter.org for events & activities (Announcement sheets are posted weekly under Events & News). The light of God shines in his face, come and see, He offers all his pard ning grace; come and see. Easter Choir 1977 Augsburg Fortress Children s Message Word JAM Kids! You can go to the Fellowship Hall now to join your Small Group. Have fun learning about Jesus! God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song Lesson: Psalm 42: 1-3 (NRSV) As a deer longs for flowing streams, so my soul longs for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and behold the face of God? My tears have been my food day and night, while people say to me continually, Where is your God? L: The word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Gospel Acclamation: Holy Communion, Setting Three 1978, 2006: Richard W. Hillert, b. 1923. Gospel: John 4: 1-42 (NRSV) Narrator: Now Jesus left Judea and started back to Galilee, but he had to go through Samaria. So he came to a Samaritan city called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob s well was there, and Jesus, tired out by his journey, was sitting by the well. It was about noon. A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus spoke to her. (His disciples had gone to the city to buy food.) Jesus: Give me a drink. Woman: How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria? Jesus: If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, Give me a drink, you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water. continued 5

Woman: Sir, you have no bucket, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? Are you greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us the well, and with his sons and his flocks drank from it? Jesus: Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life. Woman: Sir, give me this water, so that I may never be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water. Jesus: Go, call your husband, and come back. Woman: I have no husband. Jesus: You are right in saying, I have no husband ; you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband. What you have said is true! Woman: Sir, I see that you are a prophet. Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem. Jesus: Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such as these to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth. Woman: I know that Messiah is coming when he comes, he will proclaim all things to us. Jesus: I am he, the one who is speaking to you. Narrator: Just then his disciples came. They were astonished that he was speaking with a woman, but no one said, What do you want? or, Why are you speaking with her? Then the woman left her water jar and went back to the city and said to the residents. Woman: Come and see a man who told me everything I have ever done! He cannot be the Messiah, can he? Narrator: They left the city and were on their way to him. Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, Third Voice: Rabbi, eat something. Jesus: I have food to eat that you do not know about. Third Voice: Surely no one has brought him something to eat? 6 Jesus: My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to complete his work. Do you not say, Four months more, then comes the harvest? But I tell you, look around you, and see how the fields are ripe for harvesting. The reaper is already receiving wages and is gathering fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together. For here the saying holds true, One sows and another reaps. I sent you to reap that for which you did not labor. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labor. continued

Narrator: Many Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the woman s testimony, He told me everything I have ever done. So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days. And many more believed because of his word. They said to the woman, Third Voice: It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the Savior of the world. L: The gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. Sermon: Pastor Steve Thomason Hymn of the Day: For All the Faithful Women verses 1, 8, last Hymnal #419 7

Father is a specific and accessible image of God that Jesus gave us. Jesus did not limit God to this image. References to God as Creator, Parent, Mother, Counselor can be equally as helpful and valid. Another translation of catholic church is church universal Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Prayers of Intercession Each prayer petition will conclude: Pastor: Lord, in your mercy, Congregation: Hear our prayer. The offering is an act of worship. Offering Prayer Great and giving God, come and see how we spend our lives. Be with us as we share our money, the minutes that make our days, and our unique strengths. Abide with us and call us to love the world more fully. Come and see how we spend your love, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, Amen. The Great Thanksgiving All are invited to receive these gifts of God. Holy Communion, Setting Three 1978, 2006: Richard W. Hillert, b. 1923. Children are welcome to come forward for a blessing. Children who have received instruction are welcome to commune. P: It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should in all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ. By the leading of a star he was shown forth to all nations; in the waters of the Jordan you proclaimed him your beloved Son, and in the miracle of water turned to wine revealed your glory. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Communion today is at the table. Grape juice is available in the tray and gluten-free wafers are at the back of the sanctuary near the sound booth. 9
