Pastor s Reflections A couple of weeks ago we celebrated Columbus Day. While it has become a way of celebrating the last spurt of good weather before the winter ice and cold set in and the blessings of the harvest, including apples and pumpkins, the original purpose of marking this holiday is to remember the discovery of this land by the Europeans and the subsequent development of what has become our culture. The landing of Columbus in the new world began a series of explorations and settlements which led to the English colonies and their inevitable conflict with King George, the Declaration of Independence, the Revolutionary War and the establishment of a new nation, the benefits of which we still enjoy today. Because of this development we often think of the our founders as having been mostly English and other northern Europeans. We sometimes forget that the Spanish had as much activity as the English in the exploration and development of the new world. The Spanish settled themselves in Florida, Mexico and California. Remember the establishment of the California missions which had such an influence on the Western portion of our nation. We sometimes forget the contribution of the Spanish as we focus so much of our historical reflection on the establishment of our national government which arose out of the English colonies. Columbus Day also reminds us of the subsequent waves of immigrants who came to these shores from various nations. In our state, on that holiday, we particularly remember the many Italian immigrants who came here from various regions of Italy and who often set up their own individual parish churches to minister to the spiritual needs of the people of their native towns and villages. They were joined by other groups from Canada, Portugal, Poland, Ireland, etc., who did the same. Each time a new group of immigrants came, those who were here before felt a certain discomfort as they feared that their own traditions and ways of doing things might be threatened. Yet as the new immigrants began to fit in and become part of us, the whole culture was enriched. It sometimes takes time for new folk to feel they are part of those who were here first and for those who were here first to feel that the newcomers belong. This is the story of America. It is a story of hope, dreams, fears and success. I couldn t help but think on this recent Columbus Day that the story goes on. New waves of immigrants continue to come to our land. As in times past they meet some resistance born out of fear. While our government continues to discuss the issue of immigration reform we need to reflect on our own attitudes. Most of us are descended from immigrants who faced discrimination when they first arrived. I remember members of my family telling stories of how their grandparents had been mistreated and ridiculed. Yet it is often, we, their descendants, who find ourselves fearful and intolerant of newcomers who are simply coming here for a better life as our forebears did. We ought to support the efforts of our president and Congress to pursue reform of immigration policies. These ought to guarantee fairness and justice for all, new and old. All, new and old, should have equal opportunities to thrive and advance without any having an unfair advantage. We all ought to have an interest in seeing that America remains the same welcoming, and diverse place it has always been. To do otherwise would change us forever.
