LOOKING FOR THAT BLESSED HOPE THE NEW JERUSALEM Tit 2:13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; Tit 2:14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. Tit 2:15 These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee. THE RESTITUTION OF ALL THINGS Act 3:21 Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began. The times of the restitution of all things - The noun rendered restitution apokatastaseos, does not elsewhere occur in the New Testament. The verb from which it is derived occurs eight times. It means properly to restore a thing to its former situation, as restoring a strained or dislocated limb to its former soundness. Hence, it is used to restore, or to heal, in the New Testament: Mat_12:13, And it (the hand) was restored whole as the other ; Mar_3:5; Luk_6:10. 2Pe 3:1 This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance: 2Pe 3:2 That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour: 2Pe 3:3 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, 2Pe 3:4 And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. 2Pe 3:5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: 1

2Pe 3:6 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: 2Pe 3:7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. 2Pe 3:8 But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 2Pe 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. 2Pe 3:10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. 2Pe 3:11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, 2Pe 3:12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? 2Pe 3:13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. 2Pe 3:14 Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless. Isa 65:17 For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind. Isa 51:6 Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look upon the earth beneath: for the heavens shall vanish away like smoke, and the earth shall wax old like a garment, and they that dwell therein shall die in like manner: but my salvation shall be forever, and my righteousness shall not be abolished. THE NEW JERUSALEM Rev 21:1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. Rev 21:2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 2

1. The new heaven and the new earth are born out of an experience very similar to the born again experience of a saint of God. 2. The perfect world of God s first creation was overthrown by Satan through rebellion and sin. But this world was cleansed of its past sin when God repented for it and baptized it with the flood of Noah s day. 3. The world now awaits its final step to a born again experience when it is purged by a baptism of fire. Old things will be entirely destroyed and behold all things shall become new. 4. One of the great changes in the new earth is that there will be no more sea. The greater portion of the present earth is covered by water and these great of water separate the people and nations of the present world. 5. The new world will give us 2/3 more inhabitable area in the new earth along with the New Jerusalem. THE NEW JERUSALEM COMES DOWN 1. Abraham journeyed as a pilgrim and a stranger upon the earth Looking for a city which hath foundation, whose builder and maker is God. 2. This city that John now views coming down out of heaven is the city Almighty God had in mind for the patriarch Abraham and for all the saints of God. 3. The Lord has prepared this city as a home for His Bride, the church. The great beauty of its adorning is unsurpassed by any ever built before it. 1Co 2:9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. 1Co 2:10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. Joh 14:1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. 3

Joh 14:2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. Joh 14:3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. ALL THINGS NEW Rev 21:3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. Rev 21:4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. Rev 21:5 And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful. 1. The great promises of rest to the weary, peace to the sad, and joy to those in sorrow now come to pass. a. No more tears b. No more death c. No more sorrow e. No more pain This will be a glorious day when all the former things in this life shall pass away and all things become new. THE REWARDS OF THE OVERCOMER Rev 21:6 And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely. Rev 21:7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. Rev 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. 4

1. The Water of life: represents eternal sustenance and provision Rev 22:1 And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. Rev 22:2 In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. Psa 36:9 For with thee is the fountain of life: in thy light shall we see light. Joh 4:14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. 2. The Saints of God now come into their inheritance as Heirs and Joint Heirs with Christ Jesus. The born again saints of God who live a righteous life shall inherit the earth. Rom 8:15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. Rom 8:16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: Rom 8:17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. Then heirs - That is, he will treat us as sons. An heir is one who succeeds to an estate. The meaning here is, that if we sustain the relation of sons to God, that we shall be treated as such, and admitted to share his favors. An adopted son comes in for a part of the inheritance, Num. 27. Heirs of God - This expression means that we shall be partakers of that inheritance which God confers on his people. That inheritance is his favor here, and eternal life hereafter. This is an honor infinitely higher than to be heir to the most princely earthly inheritance; or than to be the adopted son of the most magnificent earthly monarch. 5

THE PLIGHT OF UNBELIEVERS Rev 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. 1. This is in direct contrast to the great eternal blessings offered to the overcomers the sad plight of the unbelievers is revealed. 2. The list of sins now given to John are a great warning to the living saints of God lest they find themselves partakers of one of these offences. 3. Some have fallen from grace of God by categorizing sins as lesser and greater but notice the fearful and unbelieving are classed with such sinners as murderers and whoremongers. There are those who categorize laying as white and black lies, but John writes.. All liars shall have their par in the lake which burneth with fire. 6
