Psalm 51 - Have Mercy

Augsburg Confession, Article XII: Repentance

Transcription:

King David s prayer of confession and repentance: Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. Psalm 51:1-2

King David s prayer of confession and repentance: When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer. Psalm 32:3-4

David is a man after God s own heart because he recognized God as his Saviour and he recognized his sin. God changed David s heart. Why do we need to confess our sin to God? It is not until sin is diagnosed that a solution can be applied. Confession keeps us from the sin of hypocrisy.

DAVID RECOGNIZED WHO GOD IS HIS CHARACTER He recognized God s unfailing love and great compassion. This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. 1 John 3:16

DAVID RECOGNIZED WHO GOD IS HIS CHARACTER He recognized God s unfailing love and great compassion. God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. John 3:16-17

DAVID RECOGNIZED WHO GOD IS HIS CHARACTER He recognized God s unfailing love and great compassion. When we stand before God s character we are made to see our sin. Woe is me! I am ruined, for I am a man of unclean lips. Isaiah 6:5

DAVID RECOGNIZED WHO GOD IS HIS CHARACTER He recognized God s unfailing love and great compassion. When we stand before God s character we are made to see our sin. For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. Psalm 51:3

DAVID RECOGNIZED WHO GOD IS HIS CHARACTER He recognized God s unfailing love and great compassion. When we stand before God s character we are made to see our sin. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight. Psalm 51:4

DAVID RECOGNIZED WHO GOD IS HIS CHARACTER He recognized God s unfailing love and great compassion. When we stand before God s character we are made to see our sin. This keeps us from a false repentance a repentance that is based on consequences rather than the horror of sin.

DAVID RECOGNIZED THE COST OF HIS FORGIVENESS Take a bunch of hyssop, dip it into the blood in the basin and put some of the blood on the top and on both sides of the door frame. Exodus 12:22 Only the blood of Jesus Christ can wash away our sins.

RECOGNIZING THE CHARACTER OF GOD AND THE COST OF FORGIVENESS ENABLES US TO ACCEPT GOD S FORGIVENESS Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me and I will be whiter than snow. ~ Psalm 51:7 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. ~ 1 John 1:9

RECOGNIZING THE CHARACTER OF GOD AND THE COST OF FORGIVENESS ENABLES US TO ACCEPT GOD S FORGIVENESS you have put all my sins behind your back. (Isaiah 38:17b) I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions, for my own sake, and remembers your sins no more. (Isaiah 43:25)

RECOGNIZING THE CHARACTER OF GOD AND THE COST OF FORGIVENESS ENABLES US TO ACCEPT GOD S FORGIVENESS As far as east is from west so far has he removed our transgressions from us. (Psalm 103:12) If we confess our sins he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9)
