HOLY COMMUNION The Trnsfigurtion of our Lord Jesus is trnsfigured on the mountin Februry 7, 2016 + 10:30.m. Exploring the promise of God for ll The Holy Spirit gthers us in unity on the first dy of the week, the dy of Christ s resurrection Swiss composer Jen Detwyler (1907-1994) is remembered mostly for the works he wrote for Alphorn. The middle movements of his second trumpet concerto perfectly set the stge for tody s celebrtion of the Trnsfigurtion. In bptism, we re clothed in the white robe of Christ Witnesses to the glory of God in the fce of Jesus will be unble to void reflecting tht glory in the world. It ws true for Moses. It ws doubtless true for eter, Jmes, nd John. We pry tht it will be true of ll of us who see the glory of the Lord in the word nd in the supper nd who re being trnsformed into the sme imge by the Spirit of God. GATHERING RELUDE Concerto No. 2 for Trumpet & Orgn Jen Detwyler Movements III & IV At the sound of the bell, the ssembly stnds nd fces the entrnce. THANKSGIVING FOR BATISM Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, the fountin of living wter, the rock who gve us birth, our light nd our slvtion. Amen. Joined to Christ in the wters of bptism, we re clothed with God s mercy nd forgiveness. Let us give thnks for the gift of bptism. Holy God, holy nd merciful, holy nd mighty, you re the river of life, you re the everlsting well spring, you re the fire of rebirth. Glory to you for ocens nd lkes, for rivers nd strems. Honor to you for cloud nd rin, for dew nd snow; for Minnehh nd Superior; for Clhoun nd Hrriet; for White Ber, Cedr nd Crystl; for Mississippi, Minnesot nd St. Croix. Your wters re below us, round us, bove us; our life is born in you. You re the fountin of resurrection. rise to you for your sving wters: Noh nd the nimls survive the flood, Hgr discovers your well. The Isrelites escpe through the se, nd they drink from your gushing rock. Nmn wshes his leprosy wy, nd the Smritn womn will never be thirsty gin.

At this font, holy God, we pry: rise to you for the wter of bptism nd for your Word tht sves us in this wter. Brethe your Spirit into ll who re gthered here nd into ll cretion. Illumine our dys. Enliven our bones. Dry our ters. Wsh wy the sin within us, nd drown the evil round us. Stisfy ll our thirst with your living wter, Jesus Christ, our Svior, who lives nd reigns with you nd the Holy Spirit, one God, now nd forever. Amen. ROCESSIONAL HYMN (hymn) 317 Jesus on the Mountin ek GREETING AND RAYER OF THE DAY The people who wlked in drkness hve seen gret light! Grce to you, nd pece from God who shines mong us. And lso with you. God speks to us in scripture reding, preching, nd song one God, now nd forever. Amen. WORD CHILDREN S WORD Frewell to Allelui Children re invited to come forwrd; prents re welcome to come with their children. FIRST READING Moses fce shone Exodus 34:29 35 Moses fce shone with the reflected glory of God fter he received the ten commndments on Mount Sini. The sight cused the Isrelites to be frid, so Moses wore veil to msk the rdince of God s glory, tking it off when he spoke directly with God. Moses cme down from Mount Sini. As he cme down from the mountin with the two tblets of the covennt in his hnd, Moses did not know tht the skin of his fce shone becuse he hd been tlking with God. 30 When Aron nd ll the Isrelites sw Moses, the skin of his fce ws shining, nd they were frid to come ner him. 31 But Moses clled to them; nd Aron nd ll the leders of the congregtion returned to him, nd Moses spoke with them. 32 Afterwrd ll the Isrelites cme ner, nd he gve them in commndment ll tht the LORD hd spoken with him on Mount Sini. 33 When Moses hd finished speking with them, he put veil on his fce; 34 but whenever Moses went in before the LORD to spek with him, he would tke the veil off, until he cme out; nd when he cme out, nd told the Isrelites wht he hd been commnded, 35 the Isrelites would see the fce of Moses, tht the skin of his fce ws shining; nd Moses would put the veil on his fce gin, until he went in to spek with him. Word of God come down to us. Thnks be to God. 2 In his debtes with the Corinthins, ul contrsts the glory of Moses with the glory of Christ. The Isrelites could not see Moses fce becuse of the veil. But in Christ we see the unveiled glory of God nd re trnsformed into Christ s likeness. SECOND READING We will be trnsformed 2 Corinthins 3:12 4:2 ul writes to the church t Corinth: We hve such hope, we ct with gret boldness, 13 not like Moses, who put veil over his fce to keep the people of Isrel from gzing t the end of the glory tht ws being set side. 14 But their minds were hrdened. Indeed, to this very dy, when they her the reding of the old covennt, tht sme veil is still there, since only in Christ is it set side. 15 Indeed, to this very dy whenever Moses is red, veil lies over their minds; 16 but when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. 17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, nd where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 18 And ll of us, with unveiled fces, seeing the glory of the Lord s though reflected

in mirror, re being trnsformed into the sme imge from one degree of glory to nother; for this comes from the Lord, the Spirit. 4:1 Therefore, since it is by God s mercy tht we re engged in this ministry, we do not lose hert. 2 We hve renounced the shmeful things tht one hides; we refuse to prctice cunning or to flsify God s word; but by the open sttement of the truth we commend ourselves to the conscience of everyone in the sight of God. Word of God come down to us. Thnks be to God. GOSEL ACCLAMATION The ssembly welcomes the gospel, singing: GOSEL Jesus is trnsfigured on the mountin Luke 9:28 36 The holy gospel ccording to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. The converstion bout Jesus suffering nd deth is enclosed in dzzling foreshdowing of the resurrection. God ffirms Jesus identity, the disciples re stunned speechless, nd Jesus resumes his mission with demonstrtion of his power over evil. Now bout eight dys fter these syings Jesus took with him eter nd John nd Jmes, nd went up on the mountin to pry. 29 And while he ws prying, the ppernce of his fce chnged, nd his clothes becme dzzling white. 30 Suddenly they sw two men, Moses nd Elijh, tlking to him. 31 They ppered in glory nd were speking of his deprture, which he ws bout to ccomplish t Jeruslem. 32 Now eter nd his compnions were weighed down with sleep; but since they hd styed wke, they sw his glory nd the two men who stood with him. 33 Just s they were leving him, eter sid to Jesus, Mster, it is good for us to be here; let us mke three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, nd one for Elijh not knowing wht he sid. 34 While he ws sying this, cloud cme nd overshdowed them; nd they were terrified s they entered the cloud. 35 Then from the cloud cme voice tht sid, This is my Son, my Chosen listen to him! 36 When the voice hd spoken, Jesus ws found lone. And they kept silent nd in those dys told no one ny of the things they hd seen. The gospel of the Lord. rise to you, O Christ. SERMON silence for reflection HYMN OF THE DAY (hymn) 316 Oh, Wondrous Imge, Vision Fir stnz 1 - ll; 2 - men; 3 - trumpet & orgn; 4 - women; 5 - ll AOSTLES CREED A Let us together proclim the fith tht we shre. I believe in God, the Fther lmighty, cretor of heven nd erth. 3

I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who ws conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mry, suffered under ontius ilte, ws crucified, died, nd ws buried; he descended to the ded. On the third dy he rose gin; he scended into heven, he is seted t the right hnd of the Fther, nd he will come to judge the living nd the ded.
