From the Pastor s Desk The three readings today, the third Sunday of Lent, all speak of God s mercy and compassion. During this holy season, Holy Mother Church calls us to repent, that is, to be sorry for our sins and firmly resolve not to commit these again deliberately. Lent is the time for conversion, a change of heart, where we choose love of God and others instead of self-centered or sinful priorities that lead us away from Him. God loves us more that we can ever know or realize and is always willing to take us back despite the most grievous sins we may have committed. Only after we have been freed from sin (in thought, word or deed) can God s grace flow freely in us, mold us to His likeness, and truly be His children. The first reading relates how God, in His goodness and mercy, freed His chosen people from slavery, cared for them as Moses led them through the desert, and eventually led them to the Promised Land. The Exodus story is ours as well. At times we may feel that our life is one of slavery, a seemingly neverending period of a monotonous daily life, or worse, a slavery to sinful situations, relationships or addictions that seem to overpower us. Let us take heart. God journeys with us. All we have to do is to turn to Him for help and He will supply all our needs. In today s Gospel, Jesus speaks about a fig tree that doesn t produce fruit but is given more time. The good news is that we are given many opportunities to learn from our failures and start all over again. We are given another Lent to call upon the Lord who is Kind and merciful. We are given another time to enter into the life of the Church and renew our life. Although God patiently waits for sinners to repent, giving them grace to do so, He will not wait forever. Time may run out; therefore, timely repentance is necessary. Let us take the opportunities that St. Nick s offers us this Lent. We can care for the poor through Operation Rice Bowl. We can gather together for the Stations of the Cross every Friday after the 12:05 PM Mass (English) in the Chapel and at 7:00PM (Spanish) in the Church. We can go for confession from Monday to Saturday before the Noon Mass. We will also have Reconciliation Monday on April 15 th 3-9 PM in the Church. A Lenten Parish Mission (Monday to Wednesday-March 25-27) Aside from the things we can do individually this Lent to grow in faith, there are also spiritual exercises we can do as a parish family. A Lenten Parish Mission is one of these. Thus, I encourage all of you, your family, and friends to be part of this grace-filled opportunity. We welcome Fr. Anthony Chanan, our presenter, who will help us find hope and strength from the Lord during these challenging times. Fr. Anthony serves as a parochial vicar at St. Ephrem Church in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. His talks are motivational, inspiring and message-oriented. The service and presentation start at 7:00 PM. Come as a family; bring a friend. God bless you! Fr. John Francis March 24, 2019 4

Third Sunday of Lent RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CORNER 5 Sister Alice Michael, S.U.S.C. - Director of Faith Formation Contact Information 718 591-6536 We are already at the Third Sunday of Lent. The Third, Fourth, and Fifth Sunday of Lent is very special for those who are preparing to receive Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Communion at the Easter Vigil. The parish of St. Nicholas of Tolentine is very blessed to have two persons who will be receiving these sacraments: SALVADOR AMER and ABRAHAM CASTRO The parishes who have persons who will be receiving the sacraments of initiation during the Easter Vigil are asked to use the readings from Cycle A for the third, fourth, and fifth Sunday of Lent because the Gospels for these Sundays have a baptismal theme: the Samaritan Woman at the Well focuses on the water of baptism; the Man Born Blind focuses on the light that he received (not only the physical light of sight, but also the spiritual light of faith); and the Raising of Lazarus focuses on the theme of the new life which those to be baptized receive. These were the readings used in the early Church. On each of these Sundays, SALVADOR and ABRAHAM will be experiencing the Rite of Scrutiny which will be preparing them to receive the sacraments at the Easter Vigil. Only at the 10:45 Mass will these readings be used; for all the other Masses the readings for Cycle C will be used. As a parish community, we should be praying for them. A VERY SPECIAL REMINDER: The parish mission is this Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. The Lenten season asks that we pray more, be willing to make sacrifices, and be generous in many ways. WHAT AN OPPORTUNITY THESE THREE DAYS GIVE US TO RECEIVE SPECIAL GRACES FROM ALMIGHTY GOD won t you make EVERY EFFORT to participate? I will be happy to take the children apart and we will have our own special Mission. God Bless You! Sister Alice Michael, S.U.S.C. Hermana Alice Michael, S.U.S.C. Directora de Formación de Fe
