Please plan on joining us as we will also have a Special Recognition of Vietnam Veterans. (And please plan to help if you are able!) Hello Brothers, Why did you join the Knights of Columbus? The reason I asked that question last month was due to the low participation in our council meetings and events. In fact, it is always the same members getting involved in council events. So, I got to thinking, "Why did you join the Knights of Columbus? So I would like to give you some of my thoughts on this question. People join groups for a multitude of reasons. I have discovered that a major reason people join groups often results in some form of need satisfaction on the part of the individual. That being said, membership into a group can fulfill many needs, some of which people are not aware of. Therefore, did you join the Knights of Columbus for companionship, survival and security, affiliation and status, power and control or just plain achievement? What category do you fall into? The Knights of Columbus came together many years ago to accomplish several related tasks which have not changed over those years. America has changed. I realize that we have many older brothers that are not able to participate, however, there are many who can. We have many that work, as I do, but I still make an effort to get involved in this organization. Many brothers are married and have children and those children take priority. As Grand Knight I don't want you come to every meeting or every event, but I would like to ask you to consider coming to one or two of our council meetings, and participate in a few of our events, to see what we are doing and meet new brothers. Please give this some thought. Thank you. Vivat Jesus, George S Harding Grand Knight Grand Knight's Corner 1

At our Oct 16 First Degree Exemplification DD Anthony Farrell and our State Deputy, Bob Baemmert, presented John Guererro two awards for the past year: our first Star Council Award since 2009-10, a n d t h e S u p r e m e International Service Program Award, 5th Place, for our H e l p i n g P e o p l e w i t h Disabilities efforts (the Tootsie Roll Drives along with the work parties at Easter Seal Camp Stand by Me. ) Given the special recognition of two of the achievements of his fraternal year at the helm noted above, it is appropriate this month that we interview our most recent Council Grand Knight (and current Assembly Faithful Navigator), John Guerrero. John, of course, has held a number of important Knight positions for us, including as Chancellor, Deputy Grand Knight, and Grand Knight and Trustee (4 times). In fact, it was in 2009 that John introduced The Power of Ten concept to our Council. Mark: First, how long have you been a Knight, and what caused you to want to become one? John: I ve been a Knight for thirteen years and what caused me to want to become one was that I had the need to follow in my father s footsteps. You see, he was a well known knight and Grand Knight. When I was younger I followed him around to functions and activities. Thirteen years ago I was just sitting at home watching TV enjoying my retirement from working for over 30 years. I said to myself, I have to do something different! I knew there was a Knights of Columbus meeting that evening. I grabbed the Form 100 and went to Church, Rm 12. I walked in and handed them the Form 100 and said, I guess I m ready to become a Knight! Mark: Please share with us some thoughts on what it means to you to be a Knight, and what have you enjoyed most, or found most rewarding, about being a Knight? John: It s been a great pleasure to serve my Parish and Community; to evangelize and spread the Gospels, pray the rosary which is what Mother Mary wants us to be doing. Walking around as a Brother Knight witnessing us accomplish our respective goals, like the first Saturday Rosary, ushering, and Parish dinners. All of our accomplishments have been focused on the Power of Ten. The Power of Ten is a tool to promote Council communication. Mark: As Faithful Navigator, what are your hopes, plans and goals for the Assembly this Fraternal Year? John: As Faithful Navigator for the Holy Trinity Assembly I want to accomplish our tasks within our budget, including to sponsor a seminarian, provide a scholarship for a graduating senior, and to promote and support the color corps activities. I d like to duplicate this past Fraternal Year 2016-2017 when we earned the Star Assembly Award. Mark: Finally, who is your favorite Saint? Or, in the same vein, is there a Christian life you find particularly inspiring? John: I d like to recognize the Blessed Santa Marian Kamalen, Our Lady of Fatima, and Our Lady of Guadalupe they all urge us to continue praying the Rosary. Mark: Great, John. Any last words? John: I d like to thank all my Brother Knights for their hard work this past Fraternal Year to accomplish our goal of Star Council Award. If we continue good communications we will accomplish all our goals! Newsletter Editor: Mark Alcamo, at: alcamos@comcast.net, or 360-377-3023.
