THE LAST WORD: from Canon Tom It s good to be back! Thank you for all the goodwill messages I ve received in recent days. It really is good to be back! I feel rested and re-charged, and ready to roll my sleeves up once again. Those of our readers who are in church today (or last Thursday) will be treated to a few photos of my Extended Ministerial Study Leave on our newly installed projection screen (thanks to the work of David Deadman and others in my absence). But for those who will only read all about it, here s a few early thoughts from my time away. In Australia, Clare and I spent significant time with the Bruderhof community. They are a Christian community of families who choose to live together, on shared land. No-one owns anything by right, only what the community provides for their needs. They model their lives on the pattern of the early church in Jerusalem, and there was much about them that we found attractive. It was especially noticeable how connected the whole community were to one another. By working, eating and worshipping together, they form deep bonds and mutually supportive relationships across the generations. Children and young people grow up surrounded by positive role models, and the elderly are cared for, in loving community, until their final days. We found ourselves noticing how different such a way of living is from our highly fractured society even (dare I say it?) the caring community of St Faith s Havant. For the most part, we tend to lead separated lives, with our individual commitments and personal choices sometimes taking precedence over our commitment to each other and the wider community. This is a theme I shall return to in sermon -writing over the coming weeks, no doubt! After Australia, some urgent family needs meant that I never did get to visit Lindisfarne or Iona during my Leave (as many of you will know I had intended to do). Instead, however, I spent about six weeks in total in west/ coastal Wales, reconnecting with my now elderly parents and some of my other family. I had time for riding my motorbike, walking the cliffs, reading books, and yes, playing the Blues in a Welsh night-club! Many insights have been gained as a result which I will undoubtedly unfold in the coming months through sermons. On a personal level, the most significant insight has been the need to maintain a healthy work-rest-play balance (which I know will make some of my staff and PCC colleagues whoop with joy). I m learning that I can t (and shouldn t try to be) everywhere at once...and I hope you ll see a more relaxed (possibly even thoughtful!) Rector from time to time. Do feel free to remind me of this pledge! Canon Tom 8
