THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT MARCH 24, 2019 From the burning bush, Moses is called by God to lead his people out of slavery into freedom (1, Ps). The parable of the fig tree speaks, on the one hand, of God s patience, but of the urgency of the call to conversion, on the other (3). Like the Hebrews of old, we too have failed to heed God s call thinking ourselves to be self-righteous (2). TOGETHER LET US GO FORTH JUNTOS SIGAMOS ADELANTE CAMPAIGN PRAYER The Together Campaign As we begin the campaign we are asking each family to pray about a 5 year pledge. For most parishioners this is a manageable way to make a gift that fits into their budget and allows each family to plan ahead. About 90% of parishioners who pledge choose a monthly payment plan. We are hoping that every family would consider a courageous pledge and one that will help us build a new school, and a new outdoor gathering space. Below is a chart that may assist in determining how to support our campaign: Eternal Father, through your Beloved Son Jesus and the intercession of Our Lady of the Lake, pour out your Holy Spirit on our Campaign. You have blessed Our Lady of the Lake Parish abundantly. Thank you for all those who came before us to provide our beautiful church and campus. May the gifts and labor we now offer begin in your mercy and be brought to completion by your saving help. Open our minds to your thoughts. Open our hearts to your generosity. Open our hands to the work you have prepared for us, so that we may hand on with increase that which we received from the faithful hands of others. We ask this through Christ, Our Lord. Amen. $30 per month = a total 5 year pledge of $1,800 or $1.00 per day $60 per month = a total 5 year pledge of $3,600 or $2.00 per day $83 per month = a total 5 year pledge of $5,000 or $2.75 per day $125 per month=a total 5 year pledge of $7,500 or $4.00 per day $167 per month=a total 5 year pledge of $10,000..or $5.50 per day $200 per month=a total 5 year pledge of $12,000..or $6.58 per day $250 per month=a total 5 year pledge of $15,000..or $8.25 per day $333 per month=a total 5 year pledge of $20,000..or $11.00 per day $417 per month=a total 5 year pledge of $25,000..or $14.00 per day Online pledges: visit TogetherGoForth.org and click Donate. To give securely and directly, be sure to select Our Lady of the Lake Parish, LHC to ensure your pledge helps our parish

SUNDAY REFLECTION FOR LENT A CALL TO REPENTANCE ST. Francis of Assisi once invited a young friar to go with him into town to preach. Francis and the young friar spent all day walking through the streets and then came home. When the day s journey was done, the young friar was disappointed and asked Weren t we supposed to preach today? Francis replied, Son, we have preached. We were preaching while we were walking. We were seen by many and our behavior was noted. It is of no use walking anywhere to preach unless we preach wherever as we walk! He summed up his idea in these words Preach the Gospel everywhere, and if necessary, use words. To him witnessing to Jesus wasn t merely quoting some words out of the Bible from time to time but one who lives by the word of God each day. Lent basically is a season of growth and maturation in the faith. This is what God and the Church hope to harvest at the Paschal Feast. Increase in faith and holiness, increase in membership through spiritual rebirth and increase in love for God and others. Yes, Easter will invite us to a life of witnessing to the fact of the resurrection which has to be practical for all to see. The gardener in today's Gospel asked the owner of the vineyard to give the barren fig tree another chance to produce fruit. He promised to dig around it and manure it, to give it one last chance to prove itself. This practically suggests that we too need to nurture our faith as individuals and as a Church so as to bear the kind of fruit God wants from us before He returns. We can only achieve this by seriously considering the invitation to repentance which is the main theme of today's readings. Today, we celebrate the Lord who frees us from our slavery to sin, if only we listen to His warning to repent. St. Paul in the second reading gives us a kind reminder of the consequences of deliberately going contrary to God s will. He carefully traced the death of the Israelites to their inability to please God. That is to say, because they sinned against God. Hence, Paul concluded by warning us that: All these happened as a warning, and it was written down to be a lesson for us who are living at the end of the age. In today s gospel, Jesus was very direct in his words when he said: Unless you repent you will perish. One might say that this is too harsh to come from Christ who is merciful and compassionate. The truth is that when Jesus speaks this way, it does not diminish his compassion and mercy. Rather, he does so because he actually cares for us and sees what we cannot see. He simply warns us of the negative consequences of living a sinful life and wants us to repent and live a better life. The Gospel reminds us that we have time on this earth to change our lives. We celebrate a God of second chance who expects us to use the time well. This should not be seen as a threat, but an invitation. It's to the glory of God the Father if we bear much fruits. The Kingdom of God becomes a reality in our midst if we bear fruits of holiness. Let us therefore ask today for this grace of desiring change in our lives as we open ourselves to the leadership of God through His Word so that when he returns He will harvest abundantly from our lives. Fr. Julius

Psalm 103 The Lord is kind and merciful. 8:45 am Mass Psalm 95 If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts. Offertory Song Hosea Gregory Norbet Come back to me with all your heart, don t let fear keep us apart. Trees do bend, though straight and tall; so must we to others call. Refrain: Long have I waited for your coming home to me and living deeply our new life. The wilderness will lead you to your heart where I will speak. Integrity and justice, with tenderness, you shall know. You shall sleep secure with peace; faithfulness will be your joy. SPIRITUAL COMMUNION PRAYER (For those who are not able to receive Communion at this time) My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen. Words and music used with permission. Communion Songs Change Our Hearts Rory Cooney Refrain: Change our hearts this time, your word says it can be. Change our minds, this time, Your life could make us free. We are the people Your call set apart, Lord this time change our hearts. Brought by your hand to the edge of our dreams. One foot in paradise, one in the waste. Drawn by your promises, still we are lured by the shadows and the chains we leave behind. Now as we watch you stretch out your hands, of fring abundances, fullness of joy. Your milk and honey seem distant, unreal, when we have bread and water in our hands. Stand By Me Tom Kendzia Refrain: Stand by me, stand by me. Lift me up from the restless sea. When I am lost, when love can't be found, when no one cares, Lord, stand by me. When the storms of life are raging, Lord stand by me. When the current pulls me under, Lord, stand by me. When the rising waters toss me like a ship upon the sea, You who rule the wind and water, Lord, stand by me. In the midst of persecution, Lord, stand by me. When my enemies surround me, Lord, stand by me. When the tyrant wields his terror and the armies wage their might, when the darkness overwhelms me, Lord, stand by me. Closing Song Jerusalem, My Destiny Rory Cooney Refrain: I have fixed my eyes on your hills, Jerusalem, my destiny! Though I cannot see the end for me, I cannot turn away. We have set our hearts for the way; this journey is our destiny. Let no one walk alone. The journey makes us one. In my thirst, you let me drink the waters of your life. Here among you I have met the savior, Jesus Christ. Prayer to Saint Michael, the Archangel St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell, Satan and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Words and music used with permission. CCLI License #1680760 is printed with copyright permission. All rights reserved.
