TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME If we want to know what Jesus parable is about in today s gospel, it seems that we don t need to work too hard because Saint Luke tells us right at the beginning: Jesus told his disciples a parable about their need to pray always and not to lose heart. This parable has often been used to bring comfort to us about our prayer life. But could there be a more challenging message for those who take stewardship seriously? Widows were the poorest and most vulnerable of people in Jesus time. Oppressive legal and economic structures were the norm. Could it be that we are also encouraged to pray persistently for the poor, the weak and the vulnerable as we hear their cry for justice? And that we must not lose heart that we can effect change in their lives? WORLD MISSION SUNDAY Next week, we will celebrate World Mission Sunday. Its theme this year is Mercy Changes the World. Pope Francis invites the entire Church to support the young mission dioceses in Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Latin America and Europe where priests, religious, and lay leaders serve some of the poorest of the poor. Please keep the missions in your prayers and be generous in next week s collection for the Society of the Propagation of the Faith. WORLD MISSION SUNDAY My dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Mercy Changes the World! On next weekend s World Mission Sunday, Pope Francis invites each of us to be part of that change, calling us to announce the mercy of God, the beating heart of the Gospel. On this 90th World Mission Sunday, we join our brothers and sisters around the world who gather at the Lord s Table to celebrate our common vocation as missionaries. Our prayers and financial help, through the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, support the work of the Mission Church, its witness to Christ, and service to the poor. In his message for World Mission Sunday, our Holy Father wrote, Let us not close our hearts within our own particular concerns, but let us open them to all of humanity. I echo these words, asking you to open your hearts to every corner of the globe to Asia, where six million children receive an education from Religious Sisters in some 16,000 Church-run elementary schools; to the Pacific Islands, where 1,000 young men are preparing for the priesthood, to bring the Lord s healing hope and peace to those in need; to Africa, where those who are sick are provided with loving care at 6,400 Catholic hospitals and small clinics. Grateful for your generosity of spirit and confident of your missionary commitment to share the joy of the Gospel with the poor, I pray for blessings for you and your families! Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend John R. Gaydos Bishop of Jefferson City CCD CLASSES Wednesday, October 19 St. Lawrence: Classes begin with Mass at 6:45 p.m. St. Anthony: Classes begin with Rosary at 6:45 p.m. WED IN CHRIST Pray for Katie Blomberg & Doug Beck who were married at St. Lawrence Church on Saturday, October 15. May their married life be filled with many graces from the Lord! CATHOLIC STEWARDSHIP APPEAL Thanking God for the many gifts he has given us, we are obliged to share what we have bene blessed with. This is the time of year that we take the opportunity to walk together and share our gifts with other Catholics of the diocese by donating to the Catholic Stewardship Appeal. Sometimes it s difficult to envision how one pledge can make a difference. However, each gift no matter what the amount does make a difference. And it is a sign that we are part of something larger the local Church known as the diocese of Jefferson City. Ask the Holy Spirit for guidance as you consider your participation this year in this important annual event. ST. ANN'S MEETING St. Ann's meeting on Tuesday, October 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the church basement.
