More Bible Stories That Illustrate Immanuel Principles All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 The more I know of the Immanuel Approach, the more I realize that we are on firm Biblical grounds. While we can site doctrine, it helps to have these principles illustrated in the stories of the Bible. Studies included in this article are: Woman and the Disciples at the Samarian Well; Four Friends and the Paralytic; The Demoniac of Gadarenes; The Blind Man Who Asked For More; Paul Considered Everything Loss For The Knowledge of Jesus; Two Disciples Walking To Emmaus; Jacob realizes that God had been with Him throughout His life; Zacchaeus Becomes Like Jesus. For more information on this topic, please see: Appendix 10 Bible Stories That Illustrate Immanuel Principles in my book, Immanuel: A Practicum. 1. Woman and the Disciples at the Samarian Well John 4:4-26 But He needed to go through Samaria. 5 So He came to a city of Samaria which is called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. 6 Now Jacob s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied from [His] journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour. 7 A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give Me a drink." 8 For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. 9 Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, "How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?" For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. 10 Jesus answered and said to her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, Give Me a drink, you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water." 11 The woman said to Him, "Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do You get that living water? 12 "Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as well as his sons and his livestock?" 13 Jesus answered and said to her, "Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, 14 "but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life." 15 The woman said to Him, "Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw." 16 Jesus said to her, "Go, call your husband, and come here." 17 The woman answered and said, "I have no husband." Jesus said to her, "You have well said, I have no husband, 18 "for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly." 19 The woman said to Him, "Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet. 20 "Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you [Jews] say that in Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship." 21 Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. 22 "You worship what you do not Page 1 2014 Patricia A. Velotta www.immanuelpracticum.com

know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. 23 "But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. 24 "God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." 25 The woman said to Him, "I know that Messiah is coming" (who is called Christ). "When He comes, He will tell us all things." 26 Jesus said to her, "I who speak to you am He." John 4:27-42 And at this point His disciples came, and they marveled that He talked with a woman; yet no one said, "What do You seek?" or, "Why are You talking with her?" 28 The woman then left her waterpot, went her way into the city, and said to the men, 29 "Come, see a Man who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?" 30 Then they went out of the city and came to Him. 31 In the meantime His disciples urged Him, saying, "Rabbi, eat." 32 But He said to them, "I have food to eat of which you do not know." 33 Therefore the disciples said to one another, "Has anyone brought Him [anything] to eat?" 34 Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work. 35 "Do you not say, There are still four months and [then] comes the harvest? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest! 36 "And he who reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit for eternal life, that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together. 37 "For in this the saying is true: One sows and another reaps. 38 "I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored, and you have entered into their labors." 39 And many of the Samaritans of that city believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, "He told me all that I ever did." 40 So when the Samaritans had come to Him, they urged Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days. 41 And many more believed because of His own word. 42 Then they said to the woman, "Now we believe, not because of what you said, for we ourselves have heard [Him] and we know that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the world." The Samaritan Woman is concerned with where to worship. Jesus tells her Who to worship. She is concerned with rules and religion; Jesus is pointing her to freedom and relationship. The Disciples are without vision and concerned with earthly needs. Jesus has an eternal perspective and concerned with His Father s will. Jesus Gives Big Answers To Our Little Questions. So often we are concerned with what is right in front of us rather than the big picture. We ask Jesus limited and narrow questions and He answers so much more than we have asked or thought. And many of the Samaritans of that city believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, "He told me all that I ever did." John 4:39 When Jesus corrects us, we don t seem to mind! We readily agree. His love is so convincing and captivating. Her repentance is not included in the story, but along with His love comes the will and grace to repent. 2. Four Friends and the Paralytic Mark 2:3-6 Then they came to Him, bringing a paralytic who was carried by four men. 4 And when they could not come near Him because of the crowd, they uncovered the roof where He was. So when they had broken through, they let down the bed on which the paralytic was lying. 5 When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, "Son, your sins are forgiven you." Jesus Alone Is The Healer. As coaches, we are to bring people to Jesus. Our strength is our confidence in Him not our confidence in ourselves, our background, out titles and positions, or our education. In the Immanuel Approach, Jesus gets all the glory for what He does as long as we leave our friend, client, patient, congregant in His loving, wise hands. Our job is to turn them to Jesus knowing that He is a far better healer than we are. 3. The Demoniac of Gadarenes Mark 5:1-15 Then they came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gadarenes. 2 And when He had come out of the boat, immediately there met Him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, 3 who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no one could bind him, not even with chains, 4 because he had often been bound with shackles and chains. And the chains had been pulled apart by him, and the shackles broken in pieces; neither could anyone tame him. 5 And always, night and day, he was in the mountains and in the tombs, crying out and cutting himself with stones. 6 When he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and worshiped Him. 7 And he cried out with a loud voice and said, "What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God that You do not torment me." 8 For He said to him, "Come out of the man, unclean spirit!" 9 Then He asked him, "What is your name?" And he answered, saying, "My name is Legion; for we are many." 10 Also he begged Him earnestly that He would not send them out of the country. 11 Now a large herd of swine was feeding there near the mountains. 12 So all the demons begged Him, saying, "Send us to the swine, that we may enter them." 13 And at once Jesus gave them permission. Then the unclean spirits went out and entered the swine (there were about two thousand); and the herd ran violently down the steep place into the sea, and drowned in the sea. 14 So those who fed the swine fled, and they told it in the city and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that had happened. 15 Then they came to Jesus, and saw the one who had been demon possessed and had the legion, sitting and clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid. John 8:32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. John 8:36 Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed. Our Relational Behavior After Healing Has Taken Place Is Very Different From Our Non Relational Behavior Before Healing. This man was demon possessed and an exaggerated example, yes, but when we are non relational or triggered back to old traumas, we can be someone no one wants to be with. Our VLE can convince us that no one is to be trusted and that we must protect ourselves. After we are healed by the Truth, we are at peace with righteousness and joy in the Holy Spirit. NOTE: In the opening prayer, we ask Jesus to appoint a representative for all of the evil spiritual forces that are present. Legion was one such representative for what might have been 2,000 of them. That representative demon spoke for all of them in v. 12. 4. The Blind Man Who Asked For More Mark 8:22-25 Then He came to Bethsaida; and they brought a blind man to Him, and begged Him to touch him. 23 So He took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the town. And when He had spit on his eyes and put His hands on him, He asked him if he saw anything. 24 And Page 3 2014 Patricia A. Velotta www.immanuelpracticum.com

he looked up and said, "I see men like trees, walking." 25 Then He put His hands on his eyes again and made him look up. And he was restored and saw everyone clearly. We Can Ask For More Help In The Healing Process. In Immanuel Approach, we can ask Jesus for more help until we feel the complete healing and are in 100% peace. 5. Paul Considered Everything Loss For The Knowledge of Jesus. Philippians 3:4-8 though I also might have confidence in the flesh. If anyone else thinks he may have confidence in the flesh, I more so: 5 circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of the Hebrews; concerning the law, a Pharisee; 6 concerning zeal, persecuting the church; concerning the righteousness which is in the law, blameless. 7 But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ This Bible story has two applications. One is about the receiver who is willing to go to dark places in his past for the truth about himself and his life so that he can know the Truth in Person. The second is about the coach who is willing to turn the receiver to Jesus instead of taking over the session. We coaches get to gain the knowledge of Jesus by watching Jesus heal when we choose not to interfere with His work. 6. Two Disciples Walking To Emmaus. Luke 24:13-32 Now behold, two of them were traveling that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was seven miles from Jerusalem. 14 And they talked together of all these things which had happened. 15 So it was, while they conversed and reasoned, that Jesus Himself drew near and went with them. 16 But their eyes were restrained, so that they did not know Him. 17 And He said to them, "What kind of conversation is this that you have with one another as you walk and are sad?" 18 Then the one whose name was Cleopas answered and said to Him, "Are You the only stranger in Jerusalem, and have You not known the things which happened there in these days?" 19 And He said to them, "What things?" So they said to Him, "The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a Prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20 and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him to be condemned to death, and crucified Him. 21 "But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened. 22 "Yes, and certain women of our company, who arrived at the tomb early, astonished us. 23 "When they did not find His body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said He was alive. 24 "And certain of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but Him they did not see." 25 Then He said to them, "O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! 26 "Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?" 27 And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself. 28 Then they drew near to the village where they were going, and He indicated that He would have gone farther. 29 But they constrained Him, saying, "Abide with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent." And He went in to stay with them. 30 Now it came to pass, as He sat at the table with them, that He took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight. 32 And they said to Page 4 2014 Patricia A. Velotta www.immanuelpracticum.com

one another, "Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?" We Can Be With Jesus Without Recognizing Him. While the best thing the coach can bring to the prayer time is confidence in Jesus, the best thing the receiver can bring is a willingness to report all that is going through her mind. So often a receiver will report that her mind is blank when the problem is simply that they don t recognize Jesus promptings. He is with us. We just need to faithfully report. 7. Jacob realizes that God had been with Him throughout His life. Genesis 28:16 Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, "Surely the LORD is in this place, and I did not know it." We experience Jesus in every scene of our lives as He takes us back in memories. We find that He was always with us, Faithful, Faithful One. 8. Zacchaeus Becomes Like Jesus. Luke 19:1-10 Then Jesus entered and passed through Jericho. Now behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus who was a chief tax collector, and he was rich. And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not because of the crowd, for he was of short stature. So he ran ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see Him, for He was going to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up and saw him, and said to him, "Zacchaeus, make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your house." So he made haste and came down, and received Him joyfully. But when they saw it, they all complained, saying, "He has gone to be a guest with a man who is a sinner." Then Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, "Look, Lord, I give half of my goods to the poor; and if I have taken anything from anyone by false accusation, I restore fourfold." And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because he also is a son of Abraham; for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost." We become like Him when we see Him for Who He really is. By seeing Jesus and being with Him, Zacchaeus becomes like Him restoring what he had stolen and giving to the poor. In other words, he began to care about the people instead of taking advantage of them. Scripture taken from the New King James Version, copyright 1982 by Thomas Nelson, Inc. Page 5 2014 Patricia A.
