Little Questions, Big Answers For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways," says the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts. Isaiah 55:8-9 Talking to Jesus often causes me to marvel at His ability to answer my little questions with such big answers that are so much deeper and broader than I would know to ask. Studies included in this article are: Pharisee Named Nicodemus; Woman of Samaria By The Well of Jacob; John The Baptist In Prison; Disciples of John and the Pharisees; Disciples James and John; Sadducees; A Man With Many Possessions; Peter And Taxes; Martha At The Burial of Lazarus; Mother of Zebedee s Sons And The Disciples; Pilate And The Chief Priests; Pharisees Disciples and the Herodians; Lawyers; Woman in the Crowd; Person Jesus Met On The Way To Jerusalem; Some of the Sadducees About the Christ Being the Son Of David; Thomas and The Way; Pilate s Court For additional information on this topic: please see: Jesus Knows Our Hearts The Pharisee Named Nicodemus John 3:2-15 Question: This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, "Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him." Answer: Jesus answered and said to him, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." Question: Nicodemus said to Him, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother s womb and be born?" Answer: Jesus answered, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 "Do not marvel that I said to you, You must be born again. The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit." Question: Nicodemus answered and said to Him, "How can these things be?" Answer: Jesus answered and said to him, "Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not know these things? Most assuredly, I say to you, We speak what We know and testify what We have seen, and you do not receive Our witness. If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Page 1 2013 Patricia A. Velotta www.immanuelpracticum.com

Man who is in heaven. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. The Woman of Samaria By The Well of Jacob John 4:7-26 Question: Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, "How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?" For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. Answer: Jesus answered and said to her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, Give Me a drink, you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water." Question: The woman said to Him, "Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do You get that living water? Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as well as his sons and his livestock?" Answer: Jesus answered and said to her, "Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life." Question: The woman said to Him, "Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet. Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship." Answer: Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." Question: The woman said to Him, "I know that Messiah is coming" (who is called Christ). When He comes, He will tell us all things." Answer: Jesus said to her, "I who speak to you am He." John The Baptist In Prison Matthew 11:2-6 Question: And when John had heard in prison about the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples 3 and said to Him, "Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?" Answer: Jesus answered and said to them, "Go and tell John the things which you hear and see: The blind see and the lame walk; the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear; the dead are raised up and the poor have the gospel preached to them. And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me." Page 2 2013 Patricia A. Velotta www.immanuelpracticum.com

Disciples of John and the Pharisees Mark 2:18-22 Question: The disciples of John and of the Pharisees were fasting. Then they came and said to Him, "Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?" Answer: And Jesus said to them, "Can the friends of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them they cannot fast. But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days. No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; or else the new piece pulls away from the old, and the tear is made worse. And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine bursts the wineskins, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. But new wine must be put into new wineskins." The Disciples James and John Luke 9: 54-56 Question: And when His disciples James and John saw this, they said, "Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, just as Elijah did?" Answer: But He turned and rebuked them, and said, "You do not know what manner of spirit you are of. For the Son of Man did not come to destroy men s lives but to save them." And they went to another village. The Sadducees Matthew 22:23-32 Question: The same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Him and asked Him, 24 saying: "Teacher, Moses said that if a man dies, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife and raise up offspring for his brother. Now there were with us seven brothers. The first died after he had married, and having no offspring, left his wife to his brother. Likewise the second also, and the third, even to the seventh. Last of all the woman died also. Therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife of the seven will she be? For they all had her." Answer: Jesus answered and said to them, "You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God. For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels of God in heaven. But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God, saying, I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living." A Man With Many Possessions Mark 10:17-21 Question: Now as He was going out on the road, one came running, knelt before Him, and asked Him, "Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?" Answer: So Jesus said to him, "Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. 19 "You know the commandments: Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and your mother. Question: And he answered and said to Him, "Teacher, all these things I have kept from my youth." Answer: Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, "One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me." Peter And Taxes Matthew 17:24-27 Question: When they had come to Capernaum, those who received the temple tax came to Peter and said, "Does your Teacher not pay the temple tax?" He said, "Yes." Answer: And when he had come into the house, Jesus anticipated him, saying, "What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth take customs or taxes, from their sons or from strangers?" Question: Peter said to Him, "From strangers." Answer: Jesus said to him, "Then the sons are free. Nevertheless, lest we offend them, go to the sea, cast in a hook, and take the fish that comes up first. And when you have opened its mouth, you will find a piece of money; take that and give it to them for Me and you." Martha At The Burial of Lazarus John 11:21-27 Question: Then Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You." Answer: Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again." Statement: Martha said to Him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day." Answer; Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Jesus Question: Do you believe this?" Martha s Answer: She said to Him, "Yes, Lord, I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world." The Mother of Zebedee s Sons And The Disciples Matthew 20:21-28 Question: And He said to her, "What do you wish?" She said to Him, "Grant that these two sons of mine may sit, one on Your right hand and the other on the left, in Your kingdom." Answer: But Jesus answered and said, "You do not know what you ask. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?" They said to Him, "We are Page 4 2013 Patricia A. Velotta www.immanuelpracticum.com

able." So He said to them, "You will indeed drink My cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with; but to sit on My right hand and on My left is not Mine to give, but it is for those for whom it is prepared by My Father." Question: And when the ten heard it, they were greatly displeased with the two brothers. Answer: But Jesus called them to Himself and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who are great exercise authority over them. Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many." Pilate And The Chief Priests Mark 15:2-5 Question: Then Pilate asked Him, "Are You the King of the Jews?" Answer: He answered and said to him, "It is as you say." Question: And the chief priests accused Him of many things. Answer: But He answered nothing. Question: Then Pilate asked Him again, saying, "Do You answer nothing? See how many things they testify against You!" Answer: But Jesus still answered nothing, so that Pilate marveled. Pharisees Disciples and the Herodians Matthew 22:16-22 Question: And they sent to Him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that You are true, and teach the way of God in truth; nor do You care about anyone, for You do not regard the person of men. Tell us, therefore, what do You think? Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?" Answer: But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, "Why do you test Me, you hypocrites? Show Me the tax money." So they brought Him a denarius. Question: And He said to them, "Whose image and inscription is this?" Answer: They said to Him, "Caesar s." Answer: And He said to them, "Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar s, and to God the things that are God s." Answer: When they had heard these words, they marveled, and left Him and went their way. Page 5 2013 Patricia A. Velotta www.immanuelpracticum.com

Lawyers Luke 11:45-52 Question: Then one of the lawyers answered and said to Him, "Teacher, by saying these things You reproach us also." Answer: And He said, "Woe to you also, lawyers! For you load men with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers. 47 "Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. 48 "In fact, you bear witness that you approve the deeds of your fathers; for they indeed killed them, and you build their tombs. 49 "Therefore the wisdom of God also said, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and persecute, 50 "that the blood of all the prophets which was shed from the foundation of the world may be required of this generation, 51 "from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah who perished between the altar and the temple. Yes, I say to you, it shall be required of this generation. 52 "Woe to you lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge. You did not enter in yourselves, and those who were entering in you hindered." Woman in the Crowd Luke 11:27-28 Statement: And it happened, as He spoke these things, that a certain woman from the crowd raised her voice and said to Him, "Blessed is the womb that bore You, and the breasts which nursed You!" Answer: But He said, "More than that, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it! A Person Jesus Met On The Way To Jerusalem Luke 13:22-30 Question: And He went through the cities and villages, teaching, and journeying toward Jerusalem. Then one said to Him, "Lord, are there few who are saved?" Answer: And He said to them, "Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I say to you, will seek to enter and will not be able. When once the Master of the house has risen up and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and knock at the door, saying, Lord, Lord, open for us, and He will answer and say to you, I do not know you, where you are from, then you will begin to say, We ate and drank in Your presence, and You taught in our streets. But He will say, I tell you I do not know you, where you are from. Depart from Me, all you workers of iniquity. "There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, and yourselves thrust out. They will come from the east and the west, from the north and the south, and sit down in the kingdom of God. And indeed there are last who will be first, and there are first who will be last." Some of the Sadducees about the Christ Being the Son Of David Luke 20:41-44 Jesus Question and Answer: And He said to them, "How can they say that the Christ is the Son of David? Now David himself said in the Book of Psalms: The LORD said to my Lord, "Sit at My right hand, till I make Your enemies Your footstool." Therefore David calls Him Lord ; how is He then his Son?" Page 6 2013 Patricia A. Velotta www.immanuelpracticum.com

Thomas and The Way John 14:1-6 Jesus statement: "Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. And where I go you know, and the way you know." Question: Thomas said to Him, "Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?" Answer: Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. Pilate s Court John 18:33-38; 19:8-11 Question: Then Pilate entered the Praetorium again, called Jesus, and said to Him, "Are You the King of the Jews?" Answer: Jesus answered him, "Are you speaking for yourself about this, or did others tell you this concerning Me?" Question: Pilate answered, "Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered You to me. What have You done?" Answer: Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here." Question: Pilate therefore said to Him, "Are You a king then?" Answer: Jesus answered, "You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice." Question: Pilate said to Him, "What is truth?" And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, "I find no fault in Him at all. and Question: Therefore, when Pilate heard that saying, he was the more afraid, and went again into the Praetorium, and said to Jesus, "Where are You from?" Answer: But Jesus gave him no answer. Question: Then Pilate said to Him, "Are You not speaking to me? Do You not know that I have power to crucify You, and power to release You?" Answer: Jesus answered, "You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above. Therefore the one who delivered Me to you has the greater sin." Page 7 2013 Patricia A.
