We will be judged, and we will be judged on our kindness to others. Our final judgment will be based on how kind we were to those who needed our kindness. Unfortunately, the word 'kind' seems to have lost much of its power. I hope that we can once again empower this word because our salvation depends on it. There is nothing more important in this whole universe than the kindness we show to one another. And this kindness has nothing at all to do with mere politeness or being nice. This kindness is the heart of what it means to love. Without kindness, marriage is just an empty shell. Without kindness, there is no true friendship. Without kindness, children die from neglect. Without kindness, the sick and the aged lose hope. Without kindness, life is not worth living. But when we let kindness be the main force that moves our heart, we will discover a power for life and love and hope and healing that we could hardly imagine. As Jesus describes it, kindness is so powerful that it actually touches the divine. Every time we do a kindness to another human being, we do it to Christ. Our kindness touches Jesus, who is God. Our kindness touches the divine. In fact, it is guaranteed to do so. As we look at this Gospel, one thing should be perfectly clear...what is asked of us is what we can do. We are not commanded to do impossible things. The King did not say, "I was sick and you healed me, or I was in prison and you freed me." But simply, you welcomed me, you visited me, you gave me some food and drink, you clothed me. These are things that each of us can do. We all have different capacities to love and to give. Each of us needs to be aware of our limitations, but we also need to be aware of our possibilities. At times, we sell ourselves short, thinking that we can't do very much in this world to help make things better. That's a thought we need to get rid of at the first opportunity. Every single person has something irreplaceable to give to another person. We all have something we can offer to some other person that will make a difference in that person s life. This is the life and love that Jesus Christ our King offers to us. It is the life and love we now offer to others. Remember we will be collecting turkeys on Sunday from 7am to 1pm on the Rectory side of the church for our Parish Thanksgiving Turkey Drive. Please help us help the hungry poor. We invite all parishioners to join us for our 39 th Annual New Milford Community Interfaith Thanksgiving which will be celebrated on Sunday, at 4pm at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church on River Road. Please, come and join with our community leaders and our brothers and sisters from Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, St. Matthew s Lutheran Church, and New Milford Presbyterian Church, as we offer this special Thank You to God for his many blessings on our community. White Bags for non-perishable food donations to the New Milford Good Will Fund are in the front vestibule of the church. Please bring your white bag directly to the celebration. A free will offering will be taken up during the service. Thursday is Thanksgiving Day. Please join us as we gather for Mass at 8:30am to give thanks to God the giver of all good gifts! The Rectory and Religious Education offices will be closed on Thanksgiving Day and the following Friday. Advent is Coming! On Saturday, November 29 th, we will celebrate the beginning of a new Church year. Our Parish Advent Giving Tree will be in place on Saturday, November 29 / Sunday, November 30 at all Masses. CHRIST THE KING CHURCH OF THE ASCENSION S GIVING TREE Starting next weekend we invite you to Share in the Spirit of Christmas by participating in our parish s traditional Giving Tree outreach program. Besides our own local gift giving to children in the area, we also provide gifts to local nursing homes, homeless shelters, a local shelter for unwanted teenage boys, and to children in communities who would, were it not for our program, receive nothing for Christmas. Please note that due to the requirements some of our charities, and our delivery teams, most gifts will be due back by Sunday, December 14 th. However, some will be due back at an earlier date. It is imperative that you observe the dates we will publish in next week s bulletin for the return of gifts. Please do not bring in gifts after this time as they may not be delivered to the various charities. It is important you do not take an ornament that cannot be returned on time as this may result in someone not receiving a gift this year. Please also remember to securely attach your ornament to the package so that the gift will go to the correct recipient. Details on what each ornament means will appear in next week s bulletin. If you have any questions, or would like to volunteer to help deliver some of these gifts, please call Joan Stephens @ 201-836- 6684. May God continue to bless you for your generous support of this ministry of love and care. **Please note that unwrapped toys will be given to the Bergen County Sheriff s Department for distribution to local children in need.
