Kindergarten-2nd April 18-19, 2015 Matthew 14:22-33; Joshua 1:9 Adv. Bible for Early Readers (pp. 1140-1141, 249) Connect Time (15 minutes): Five minutes after the service begins, split kids into groups and begin their activity. BRAVE Journey: STORM Jesus wants you to be brave. As kids enter the room, ask them to tell you a time they had to be brave last week. Large Group (30 minutes): Begin 20 minutes after the service starts. Model what it looks like to be engaged in large group. Small Group (15 minutes): Keep kids in small groups until parents arrive. If you all have extra time at the end, you can review the video and songs together. As kids leave, encourage them to share the picture they drew with the person who picks them up. This week is called storm because there is no avoiding trials in this life. But in today s story, we see that Jesus calls us to be brave because he can handle any storm we face! Pray for the Holy Spirit to help you communicate that to kids.

GOAL: Connect Time is all about engaging kids in an activity that allows them to connect with each other right away while simultaneously piquing their curiosity for Large Group and preparing their minds for what they re going to hear. I DARE YOU *Break into small groups for this activity. In pairs or individually, ask kids to complete the following dares to earn a piece of candy (let kids pass if they d don t want to do a dare): o Try to lick your own elbow (no licking other people s elbows!) o Do a crabwalk across the room o Balance a spoon on your nose for 10 seconds o Act like a gorilla and pretend to pick bugs out of your friend s hair o Sing a favorite song in a funny voice o Sing the I m a Little Teapot song in an English accent and do all the motions. o Make up a crazy dance and keep the moves going for 10 seconds At the end, make sure every kid has gotten a piece of candy (even if they didn t all do dares). Debrief: o Were these dares hard? Why or why not? o Why did you do them? o Did they require bravery? Why or why not? If you have time, ask kids to share the best and worst parts of their week. Before you head into Large Group, remind them of your expectations for behavior: (1) be kind, (2) listen when somebody speaks, and (3) follow the leader s instructions.

Goal: Kids will (1) recall Peter s bravery, (2) understand what bravery means, (3) recognize that Jesus calls and equips us all for bravery and (4) identify one way they can demonstrate bravery this week. Why? It can be easy to avoid difficult situations. But it s important for kids to know that life is full of challenges and that Jesus actually calls us to be brave. Tip: If kids are fearful, encourage them with the words from the Bible verse or the words of Jesus in the story of Peter. You can find those words in Matthew 14:22-33. REVIEW THE STORY 1. What s one brave thing you ve done? 2. What s one brave thing you ve seen someone else do? 3. What does it mean to be brave? 4. What brave thing did Peter do in today s story? 5. Did Jesus want Peter to be brave? How do you know? 6. Does Jesus want you to be brave? How do you know? 7. Why can we be brave when we follow Jesus? (Consider why Peter was brave; also refer to the verse and use this as a chance to review it together.) MAKE IT PERSONAL Spread the blue paper on the floor and pretend it is water by drawing waves on it. Have kids sit or stand on the water (depending how much room you have). Have kids think of one way they could be brave this week, like Peter was brave when he walked on water (might be what kids thought of during the I m Not Afraid music video). Share. Kids should write/draw their brave thing on the blue paper. *Pray together, asking God to give us bravery this week. Then switch blue paper with another group. Stand on theirs and pray for them to be brave this week! See if kids want to pray out loud too. Then return to your original wave. MEMORIZE THE VERSE Stay on the wave and say the verse out loud together. (verse card) Lead the kids first. Then repeat it several times. (You can use silly voices like surfer dude voice, underwater voice, British accent, etc.) (Continue on the following page.)

2 Walk around to practice walking on water. Each time you repeat the verse, see if kids can fill in the blanks on their own by saying the word you stopped on. (Have them fill in the blanks as a group in case some kids don t have strong memorization skills. This should be a fun way to remember God s faithfulness.) Then give kids a Peter walking on water coloring sheet to work on. If you have extra time, make up more dares for the group (or let kids make them up)!

1 Everybody is going to face something that requires bravery at some point in life. Today s goal is for kids to see every day as an opportunity to be brave, and realize that bravery is made possible through trust in God! Recap last week s lesson so kids are on the same page. But be careful to use language that doesn t make kids feel like they missed something or are outsiders. *Click to play intro music Hi everybody! Welcome to Kids Club. It s great to see you here. We are now on the second week of our all-church journey, which is when everybody at Crossroads talks about the same things. Last week, we talked about how Jesus wants us to follow him. And sometimes he asks us to do things that seem hard, so we have to be brave. That s why we started today with some fun dares. In fact, I m going to practice being brave with you guys. I need a volunteer to choose your favorite dare from Connect Time. Then you can dare ME to do it. Do I have a volunteer? (Choose a kid and let him/her dare you to do something. Then do it, even if you have to be brave!) Wow, I felt kind of silly! I definitely had to be brave to do that. Did anybody else have to be brave to complete one of those dares? (Let kids respond.) Why? (Let same kids respond.) Great point. Now, those dares were really silly! But sometimes it takes bravery to do something hard or to do something even though other people might laugh at us. One other thing that I needed to be brave to do was when (share an example of a time you ve had to be brave). What are some times you guys have been brave? (Let 4-6 kids respond.) You re right! (Try to summarize why those things require bravery.) PETER WAS BRAVE We ve started talking about a guy named Peter (who used to be called Simon), and he did a lot of things that required bravery. Some of you weren t here last week, and that s OK! We re glad to see you today. But last week, we found out Peter had a special job to follow Jesus and show others how to follow Jesus.

But sometimes Jesus asks us things that are hard for us to do, because he wants us to trust him to help us. And today, we re going to hear about something brave Peter did as he followed Jesus. We re going to watch a video about it. As you watch, see if you can figure out the brave thing Peter did. Video: God s Story / Peter Walks on Water So what did Peter do that was brave? (Let kids respond.) Yep, he walked on water! Why did he do that? (Let kids respond.) Great thoughts he probably wanted to experience it and do what Jesus did. After all, Jesus was walking on water and Peter was following Jesus! Plus, Jesus told him to Come so Peter obeyed! Now, raise your hand if you would have been afraid to walk out onto the water in the middle of a storm (let kids respond). I probably would have been! But do you think Jesus WANTED Peter to be brave and to walk on water? (Let kids respond.) Yes! In fact, when Peter got scared and started sinking, Jesus told him he should have had faith, which means he should have been brave and kept trusting Jesus and stayed on that water! Being afraid of walking on the water makes sense to us, but it didn t to Jesus. He is in control of everything and he wants US to be brave and to trust him. WE CAN BE BRAVE Let s think about what it means to be brave. Can anybody tell me? (Let kids respond.) Yes, it means we are ready to follow Jesus, even when it s hard. We can do it with Jesus help. We don t have to walk on water in the middle of a storm but we do face other things that are hard. Let s look at some examples and play a little game. Everybody, stand up! (Let kids stand.) OK, if I show and tell you something where the person was brave, show me your strong muscles like this (model). If I show and tell you something where the person was NOT brave, shake your head and say nope (model). Ready? (Show the following pictures and describe the reaction of the person. Let kids respond. If the kid wasn't brave, ask how he/she could have been brave!) This kid is afraid of the dark, but his parents asked him to go to bed so he s obeying. This kid s little sibling was really annoying her, but she chose to be kind anyway. This kid broke a chair, but he didn t want his babysitter to get mad so he lied and said he didn t. This kid watched a movie with his friends that he wasn t supposed to watch. This kid saw that one of her classmates didn t have lunch. She shared hers, even though she knew she d get hungry later. JESUS MAKES US BRAVE Wow, you guys did a great job! The crazy thing is, we can ALL be brave because JESUS makes us brave. Remember our Bible verse, Joshua 1:9. It s a promise God makes to us:

Joshua 1:9 This is my command be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the LORD your God is with you wherever you go. (Lead the kids in reading it out loud.) Great job! That promise means no matter what you face, you can be strong and fearless. YOU can be brave. Why? (Let kids respond.) Because GOD is with you. And guess what? The story of Peter also shows us why we can be brave no matter what. To find out what it shows us, we re going to turn to our friend Shrimpita. Let s check it out: Video: Shrimpita / Jesus Walks on Water Why can we be brave when we re following Jesus? (Let kids respond.) Yes, because Jesus can do ANYTHING! He is completely powerful. Let s spend some time talking to him about that. RESPOND Think of one hard thing you ll probably have to do this week. It can be anything, like being kind to a sibling who annoys you or sharing your food or toys when you don t feel like it. Think about that thing, and then think about how Jesus wants us to be brave. As we watch this next music video, if you want, you can tell Jesus you d like to be brave and ask him to help you. Music Video: I m Not Afraid WORSHIP Pretty cool that Jesus loves us enough to help us with anything, huh? That means we really can always be brave! Let s sing another song to remind ourselves that we belong to Jesus and he loves us so much!
