WHY DO BAPTISTS STRESS THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT? Scripture: John 16: 7-14 INTRO: CERTAIN GREAT BIBLE DOCTRINES ARE NEGLECTED BECAUSE THEY HAVE BEEN PERVERTED AND ABUSED. ONE EXAMPLE IS THE HOLY SPIRIT. BECAUSE SOME HAVE GONE TO SEED ON IT AND HAVE BUILT ALL KINDS OF FALSE THEORIES AROUND IT, OTHERS HAVE JUST LEFT IT ALONE. YET, WHEN THIS IS DONE YOU FAIL TO OBTAIN A TRUE PICTURE OF THE X'N FAITH. GOD'S WORK IN THE INDIVIDUAL DOES NOT END AT SALVATION--IT CONTINUES THRU-S-A-NCTf-F-I8-AT-IGN -AND- THIS-I& 'r.he WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. BUT THIS IS NOT THE ONLY REASON THAT BAPTISTS STRESS THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, FOR THERE ARE MANY MORE. Baptists Stress the Work of the Holy Spirit Because of His Work: I. IN THE CREATION OF THE WORLD --Gen. 1:2 "And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. 1. The H. S. is as eternal as God the Father (& Son who also participated in creation) -- ~ Did not begin at Pentecost 2. The H. S. shares an equal relationship with the Father & the Son -- Bridge Sentence: "Why?"-- You wouldn't hav~ 'SF'~ ~ to live in without the creative work of the H. S. I. IN THE INSPIRATION OF THE BIBLE --II Peter 1:21 "For prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of old spoke as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.'~ pf,1 V/V't,4-3~~ "'~Moo ~(I,: ~ -- II Tim. 3: 16 11 All scripture is given by inspiration of God. 11 --ILLUS: 66 Blocks of stone in desert placed there by 40 different men... (Master plan, Master architect) --ILLUS: 40 different l)le.tl, 66 different p.o.ok s, 3 different l~ngua~es, over 1, 500 ~ and yet one continuous story- The story of redemption. --Bridge Sentence: "Why?" -- You wouldn't have a world to live in, you wouldn't have a Bible to read if it weren't for the wr,rk of the H. S.

111. J.!\J l. t1l;, V U!\J 11!\I Ui-n lu!\i U.1:"" v.t1.kll> 1. i::>!v!u\jll> l.kl'. --NOTE: The first time we see the work of the H. S. in the public ministry of X is also the first time we see all 3 person of the Trinity together--at his baptism, the inauguration of X's ministry. --Mark 1:10-11 "And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove desce nding upon him: And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." --NOTE: FROM THAT MOMENT UNTO TODAY, the Holy Spirit has been actively engaged in the continuation of X's ministry. 1. BY CALLING ATTENTION TO CHRIST --John 16:13b & 14a "Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth is come... he shall not speak of himself... He shall glorify me." 2. By Reminding Us of the Teachings of Christ --John 14:26b "he shall teach you all things and bring all things to your rememb., whatsoever I have said unto you. --Bridge Sentence: "Wh.y? "--Because of his work (I,II,III). N. IN THE SALVATION OF THE LOST --NOTE: X teaches that the H. S. begins this whole process called salvation. 1. Thru Conviction --John 16:8-11 "And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness and of judgment: Of sin, because they believe not on me; Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged." (1) Of your personal sin of unbelief (vs. 9) (2) Of Christ's perfect rightr""c,nocc which you have failed to attain (vs. 10).(3) Of God's judgment before... w~ 1.,-. ch you will stand (vs. 11) 2. Thru Conversion --John 3: 6b "That which is born of the Spirit is spirit." --~ The H. S. is the active agent in salvation. He is the catalyst that take s your faith in X and God's ability to forgive and out of this brings salvation. "Wh.y? II Because - 1.- l {

V. IN THE SANCTIFICATION OF THE SAVED --Phil. 1:6 "~ l ng confident of this very thing, that he (the H, S -i )which hath begun a good work in you (salvation) will 'feep,4)~if~rm it (sanctification) until the day of Jesus Christ." --NOTE: Sanctification is the continuation of what X did for us in salvation throughout the rest of our lives. It is "working out your own salvation." Sanctification means, "Being set aside" such as temple vessels. In the X'n life it is both an ACT and a PROCESS. AN ACT-- in the initial experience of being "set aside" when saved. A PROCESS-- in the continuing experience of "setting &side~-every- part of our life and being in dedication to X. --QUESTION: But how can the H. S. work today in,my life as a Christian? 1. By Comforting You --John 14:16 "I will pray the Father and h:l shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever". 2. By Teaching You --John 14:26 "The Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost... he shall teach you all things. 11 3. By Guiding You in Life's Decisions --John 16:13 "When he, the Spirit of truth is come, he will guide you into all truth. 4. By Assuring You --Rom. 8: 16 "The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that WE ARE THE CHILDREN OF GOD." 5. By Filling Your Life --(He is in us) I Cor. 3: 16 "Know ye not that ye are the temple of God and that the Spriti of God DWELLETH IN You." --(He wills to fill and control us) Eph. -5~8 "And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; b u:lbf. FTLLED WITH THE SPIRIT! II. --BUT WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU ARE F D? '.;Q" r1-,dj This passage in Eph. 5-6 goes on the say that{v.sf B1aii), (l)vss. 19-20 -You will have a happy, singing, positive, thankful faith. (2) vs. 21 - We will be gracious, kind and considerate of each other. (3) vss. 22-24 - Wives will have right relations with their husbands.

(4) vss. 25-33 - Husbands will love their wives and treat them with kindness and respect. (5) 6:1.,-3 - Children will honor and obey their parents. (6) 6:4 - Parents will be just in their dealings with their children. (7) 6:5-9 - Employers and employees will be fair and honest with one another 6. By Producing the "Fruit" of the Spirit in You --Gal. 5:22-23 "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meef(ness, temperance: against such there is no law. 11 --NOTE: Not one word is mentioned either here or in the Eph. 5 & 6 passage about unintelligible verbage. The H. S. is a very practical person. 7. \Vhat About "Unknown" Tongues? (1) Pentecost -- other languages (2) At Corinth -- a. An erroneous assumption --I Cor. 14 - word "Unknown" 11 times, italics. b. An immature church --NOTE: The most difficult, immature & unspiritral of all the churches to which Paul wrote. --.!:...:.. L:_ Members divided into~ Lawsuits brought against each other Open immorality tolerated (son & stepmother) Lord's Supper a time to get drunk Some denied the bodily res. of X o. A pagan influence --NOTE: Corinth at center of Greek pagan worship. i.e. Temple of Greek goddess ~hrodite (Venus) - her worship included ~ ec c ~peaking -"?.' ~ (3) What was it? ::l:t _ -' --H. H. Hobbs: "Tongues e ability fo{ one to speak languages other than his own to enable the gospel to be preached guickly to all people. It was a temporary gift which would fulfill its function and pass away (I Cor. 13: 8). The same ability today is derived through language study. (\Vhat Baptists 11 Believe, p. 52).

(4) Who is your pattem--christ or the Corinthians? --Not one shred of evidence that Jesus ever spoke 11 in tongues" Yet; a. He was BORN of the Spirit (Lu. 1:35) b. He was FILLED with the Spirit (Lu. 4:1) c. He was BAPTIZED of the Spirit (Lu. 1:22) d. He was BAPTIZED with the Spirit (Lu. 3:16) --NOTE: Neither did Jesus ever suggest that hi s followers II speak in tongues 11 VI. IN THE UNIFICATION OF THE CHURCH --I Cor. 12 :12-13a 11 For as the body is one and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is X. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body. 11 --NOTE: Where ever the H. S. has been presented aod accepted in his proper role he has brought peace, harmony ~nd unity. Where he has been presented in error there has been disharmony, division and confusion. - I Cor. 14: 33 "For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints. 11 --NOTE: God's H. S. gives the church unity and peace. Paul urges us to keep the peace and to preserve the unity. --Eph. 4: 3 "Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 11 CON: Baptists stress the work of the H. S. because --Rev. 22:lZ "And the Spirit and the Bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.

ounc t In h<i.q.-,n o 10graphy, Col. Harland Sanders of Kentucky Fried Chicken fame says that he was always a God-fearing man. In every venture he gave God a tenth of the profits. Yet he knew that if he died, God probably wouldn't take him to heaven. Woried, he traveled to Australia to a special church convention for the answer. He didn't find it. One day, Sanders was walking down a street in,i.ouisyille Keo!Pck-y, when there Rev. Waymon Rodger of Louisville's Evangef Tabernacle invited him to some evangelistic services. Several days later, Sanders went. At age 79, he claimed the promises of Rom. 10:9. "When I walked out of that church that night, I knew I was a different man. All my tithing and good deeds had never given me the sense of God's presence that I knew then." he sav~.

2233 @iii Answer Paul tells us to live victor10us1y amt to avoid excesses of the flesh. Mood~ once illustrated this truth as follows: "Tell me," he said to his audience, "How can I get the :1ir out of this glass?" One man said, 'Suck it out with a pump." Moody replied, 'That would create a vacu,um and shatter he glass." After many impossible suggesions, Moody smiled, picked up a pitcher >f water, and fill ed the glass. "There," he aid, "all the air is now removed." He then vent on to show that victory in the Chrisian life is not by "sucking out a sio eefe. nd there,"b ut rather by being filled w.ith 1e Spirit...., -Mrt: Ruh.. J.A:1 1--

Chapter 6:9-20. (E:::::::::=:!:;::;.:.:,,,, Venus was the principal Deity of ~orinth. Her Temple was one of the most magnificent buildings in the city. In it a thousand Priestesses, Public Prostitutes, were kept, at public expense, there always, always ready for Immoral Indulgence, as worship to their Goddess. Some of the Cormthian Christians, having been used to :i religion that Encouraged Immoral Living, were finding it a little hard to adapt themselves to their new religion which Prohibited Immoral Living. Paul had said, in discussing certain things, that All Thing~ are Lawful (12)! Some of them evidently were quoting this to justify their Promiscuous Sexual Indulgence. Paul positively states that i1 does not so apply; and positively, in unmistakable language, prohibit~ Christians from such Indulgences.
