WHY DO BAPTISTS STRESS THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT? Scripture: John 16: 7-14 INTRO: CERTAIN GREAT BIBLE DOCTRINES ARE NEGLECTED BECAUSE THEY HAVE BEEN PERVERTED AND ABUSED. ONE EXAMPLE IS THE HOLY SPIRIT. BECAUSE SOME HAVE GONE TO SEED ON IT AND HAVE BUILT ALL KINDS OF FALSE THEORIES AROUND IT, OTHERS HAVE JUST LEFT IT ALONE. YET, WHEN THIS IS DONE YOU FAIL TO OBTAIN A TRUE PICTURE OF THE X'N FAITH. GOD'S WORK IN THE INDIVIDUAL DOES NOT END AT SALVATION--IT CONTINUES THRU-S-A-NCTf-F-I8-AT-IGN -AND- THIS-I& 'r.he WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. BUT THIS IS NOT THE ONLY REASON THAT BAPTISTS STRESS THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, FOR THERE ARE MANY MORE. Baptists Stress the Work of the Holy Spirit Because of His Work: I. IN THE CREATION OF THE WORLD --Gen. 1:2 "And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. 1. The H. S. is as eternal as God the Father (& Son who also participated in creation) -- ~ Did not begin at Pentecost 2. The H. S. shares an equal relationship with the Father & the Son -- Bridge Sentence: "Why?"-- You wouldn't hav~ 'SF'~ ~ to live in without the creative work of the H. S. I. IN THE INSPIRATION OF THE BIBLE --II Peter 1:21 "For prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of old spoke as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.'~ pf,1 V/V't,4-3~~ "'~Moo ~(I,: ~ -- II Tim. 3: 16 11 All scripture is given by inspiration of God. 11 --ILLUS: 66 Blocks of stone in desert placed there by 40 different men... BY CALLING ATTENTION TO CHRIST --John 16:13b & 14a "Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth is come... he shall not speak of himself... He shall glorify me." 2. By Reminding Us of the Teachings of Christ --John 14:26b "he shall teach you all things and bring all things to your rememb., whatsoever I have said unto you. --Bridge Sentence: "Wh.y? "--Because of his work (I,II,III). N. IN THE SALVATION OF THE LOST --NOTE: X teaches that the H. S. begins this whole process called salvation. 1. Thru Conviction --John 16:8-11 "And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness and of judgment: Of sin, because they believe not on me; Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged." It is "working out your own salvation." Sanctification means, "Being set aside" such as temple vessels. In the X'n life it is both an ACT and a PROCESS. AN ACT-- in the initial experience of being "set aside" when saved. A PROCESS-- in the continuing experience of "setting &side~-every- part of our life and being in dedication to X. --QUESTION: But how can the H. S. work today in,my life as a Christian? 1. Paul positively states that i1 does not so apply; and positively, in unmistakable language, prohibit~ Christians from such Indulgences.
