Introduction to the day Though we sometimes doubt and often resist God s desire to protect and save us, our God persists. In holy baptism, God s people have been called and gathered into a Godinitiated relationship that will endure. Lent provides the church with a time and a tradition in which to seek the face of the Lord again. Lent provides another occasion to behold the God of our salvation in the face of the Blessed One who comes in the name of the Lord. FOR THE ORGAN/LAVINOVA RELUDE, LEASE QUIET OUR VOIES, ELL HONES AND HEARTS. LEASE STAND AS ABLE WHERE THERE IS AN * (ASTERISK) BELL RINGING - JOHN SHRYOK GREETINGS 2

*BRIEF ORDER FOR ONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS (WOV p. 10) In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: leanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus hrist our Lord. Amen If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Most merciful God, we confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus hrist, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus hrist was given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the hurch of hrist, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen 3

*RAYER OF THE DAY (WOV p. 30) The Lord be with you. 7

And also with you. Let us pray. Eternal God, it is your glory always to have mercy. Bring back all who have erred and strayed from your ways; lead them again to embrace in faith the truth of your Word and to hold it fast; through Jesus hrist your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen FIRST READING: Genesis 15:1-12, 17-18 A reading from Genesis. 1 After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, Do not be afraid, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great. 2 But Abram said, O Lord GOD, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus? 3 And Abram said, You have given me no offspring, and so a slave born in my house is to be my heir. 4 But the word of the LORD came to him, This man shall not be your heir; no one but your very own issue shall be your heir. 5 He brought him outside and said, Look toward heaven and count the stars, if you are able to count them. Then he said to him, So shall your descendants be. 6 And he believed the LORD; and the LORD reckoned it to him as righteousness. 7 Then he said to him, I am the LORD who brought you from Ur of the haldeans, to give you this land to possess. 8 But he said, O Lord GOD, how am I to know that I shall possess it? 9 He said to him, Bring me a heifer three years old, a female goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtledove, and a young pigeon. 10 He brought him all these and cut them in two, laying each half over against the other; but he did not cut the birds in two. 11 And when birds of prey came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away. 12 As the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram, and a deep and terrifying darkness descended upon him. 17 When the sun had gone down and it was dark, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces. 18 On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, To your descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates. READER The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 8

HOIR WILL SING: I HAVE DEIDED TO FOLLOW JESUS SALM: salm 27 1 The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom then shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life; of whom then shall I be afraid? 2 When evildoers came upon me to eat up my flesh, it was they, my foes and my adversaries, who stum- bled and fell. 3 Though an army should en- camp against me, yet my heart shall not be afraid; 4 and though war should rise up against me, yet will I put my trust in him. 5 One thing have I asked of the LORD; one thing I seek; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life; 6 to behold the fair beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple. 7 For in the day of trouble he shall keep me safe in his shelter; he shall hide me in the secrecy of his dwelling and set me high up- on a rock. 8 Even now he lifts up my head above my enemies round about me. 9 Therefore I will offer in his dwelling an oblation with sounds of great gladness; I will sing and make music to the LORD. 10 Hearken to my voice, O LORD, when I call; have mercy on me and answer me. 11 You speak in my heart and say, Seek my face. Your face, LORD, will I seek. 12 Hide not your face from me, nor turn away your servant in displeasure. 13 You have been my helper; cast me not away; do not forsake me, O God of my salvation. 14 Though my father and my moth- er forsake me, the LORD will sustain me. 15 Show me your way, O LORD; lead me on a level path, because of my enemies. 16 Deliver me not into the hand of my adversaries, for false witnesses have risen up against me, and also those who speak malice. 17 What if I had not believed that I should see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living! 18 Oh, tarry and await the LORD s pleasure; be strong, and he shall com- fort your 9

heart; wait patiently for the LORD. SEOND READING: hilippians 3:17--4:1 A reading from hilippians. 17 Brothers and sisters, join in imitating me, and observe those who live according to the example you have in us. 18 For many live as enemies of the cross of hrist; I have often told you of them, and now I tell you even with tears. 19 Their end is destruction; their god is the belly; and their glory is in their shame; their minds are set on earthly things. 20 But our citizenship is in heaven, and it is from there that we are expecting a Savior, the Lord Jesus hrist. 21 He will transform the body of our humiliation that it may be conformed to the body of his glory, by the power that also enables him to make all things subject to himself. 4:1 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, my beloved. READER The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. *GOSEL ALAMATION (WOV p. 31) 10

*GOSEL: Luke 13:31-35 The Holy Gospel according to Luke, the 13 th chapter. Glory to you, O Lord. 31 At that very hour some harisees came and said to [Jesus,] Get away from here, for Herod wants to kill you. 32 He said to them, Go and tell that fox for me, Listen, I am casting out demons and performing cures today and tomorrow, and on the third day I finish my work. 33 Yet today, tomorrow, and the next day I must be on my way, because it is impossible for a prophet to be killed outside of Jerusalem. 34 Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! 35 See, your house is left to you. And I tell you, you will not see me until the time comes when you say, Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. The Gospel of the Lord. raise to you, O hrist. HILDREN'S TIME SERMON *REED (WOV p. 32) I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus hrist, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under ontius ilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell.* On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic hurch, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, 11

*THE RAYERS the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen Seeking the grace, mercy, and love of almighty God, we offer our prayers for the church, for people in need, and for all of creation. ompassionate God, call your people to stand firm as citizens of heaven. As we are humbled by your wondrous love, nurture such mercy in our hearts and ministries. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. Display your faithfulness to creation in the changing of the seasons. Orchestrate the great song of praise that comes from rivers, birds, mountains, livestock, and wind. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. Drown out the terror in the world with acts of lovingkindness and generosity. Release political leaders from pride and fear to act justly and to serve citizens. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. Rush to answer those who cry out to you in time of trial (especially). Give shelter to your vulnerable children, and cover them in the comfort of your mothering wings. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. Grant solace to people who long to be parents, but have faced difficulty in bearing or adopting children. Build life-giving parent and child relationships for the sake of all. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. Build up your holy community of saints through the work of bishops and missionaries (like atrick, whom we commemorate today). And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. *REFAE (WOV p. 36) It is indeed right and salutary that we should at all times and in all places offer thanks and praise to you, O Lord, holy Father, through hrist our Lord. You bid your people cleanse their hearts and prepare with joy for the paschal feast. Renew our zeal in faith and life, and bring us to the fullness of grace that belongs to the children of God. And so, with the hurch on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: *SANTUS (WOV p. 36) 14

*GREAT THANKSGIVING (WOV p. 37) Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord, heaven and earth are full of your glory. In great love you sent to us Jesus, your Son, who reached out to heal the sick and suffering, who preached good news to the poor and who, on the cross, opened his arms to all. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Remembering, therefore, his death, resurrection, and ascension, we await his coming in glory. our out your Holy Spirit, that by this Holy ommunion we may know the unity we share with all your people in the body of your Son, Jesus hrist our Lord. GOSEL MESSAGE March 17, 2019 SEOND SUNDAY IN LENT Here and Now There may be a credible argument to be made for living life fully in the now. It might go like this: Yesterday is no more, tomorrow may never come, so be present in the present because it s all you ve got. Some harisees, members of the group of religious interpreters of God s law who so often appear as Jesus adversaries, showed up at a critical hour with an urgent and, by all indications, well-intentioned warning for him: he was in the crosshairs of killers. Herod, the embodiment of law and order for the Roman Empire (more accurately, the incarnation of an empire s brutal force an offense of power not left behind in the first century), wanted Jesus dead. Jesus, not ignoring the harisees or their warnings, nonetheless rejected them with the sort of loving intensity a mothering hen might have for her brood of chicks. With an eternal right here, right now challenge to the power and the authority of both Herod and empire, Jesus refused to flee from tomorrow s trials; he refused to withdraw from what might come. He stayed in the now. When everything seems to be going wrong, the one who is Alpha and Omega holds by faith a course toward hope. Jesus, who is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow, stands firm when certainty breaks apart in storms of chaos, when doom leases the moment, and when the long, sharp claws of tragedy and sorrow cut close. Jesus way among demons and despair is to heal yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Jesus way of hope transcends the pinnacles upon which vacant optimisms teeter yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Neither counsels of caution nor threats from empire, not the demise of prophets nor rejection from his own can stall the blessed hope that comes in the name of the Lord.
