FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH MOUNT JOY, PENNSYLVANIA 11 AM Morning Worship- -March 24, 2019 Third Sunday in Lent PRELUDE WELCOME - LIFE IN THE CHURCH Announcements & Concerns CALL TO WORSHIP from Isaiah 55:1-13 Leader: Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and you that have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. People: Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen carefully to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food. Incline your ear, and come to me; listen, so that you may live. All: For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. People: For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return there until they have watered the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and succeed in the thing for which I sent it. All: For you shall go out in joy, and be led back in peace; the mountains and the hills before you shall burst into song, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands. GATHERING PRAYER Holy God, we gather today as your people who are created by you, and people who depend upon you for each day of our existence. We live by your word and hunger for your wisdom. Holy God, fill us with you wisdom, your word, and all that is good from you. Let us rejoice as the trees and all of creation in your presence. Amen. *Song of Praise to God PRAYER OF CONFESSION AND PARDON As the Deer #9 Renew Hymnal All: In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! All: Thanks be to God! Lectio Divina Lectio Divina Lectio Divina is a spiritual practice using scripture for prayer and contemplation. It is a way of being open to what God might be saying to you through scripture. When reading a passage of scripture, read it slowly until you feel you are at a place where the Spirit is speaking to you. 1. Read this word, phrase or verse slowly and repeatedly. 2. Then meditate on it; quiet your thoughts in prayer to be open to what message might come to you. 3. Then pray and respond to that message. 4. Then pray again this time expressing love and thanks to God. The steps of Lectio Divina are: Lectio/ Read, Meditatio / Meditate, Oratio/ Pray, Contemplatio/ Contemplate Lectio Divina is a spiritual practice using scripture for prayer and contemplation. This church is a thoroughly evangelical church in the historic sense of that word and our basic purposes are to bring people to a saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ, to build them in the Christian faith and life, and to enlarge missionary participation to the extent that all may come to hear of and believe in Christ Jesus as Lord and Savior. Friend and stranger, to such a church as this you are welcome.
