St. Bonaventure M Y D E A R S I S T E R S A N D B R O T H E R S I N C H R I S T, he city of Marawi in the Philippines woke up to a terror- illed orning on M 23, 2017. A local terror group (the Maute group) that has pledged allegiance to Islaic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has besieged the city and was wreaking havoc to the once quiet and productive city. They started to burn hoes and buildings, occupied governent of ices and even hospitals. They entered a Catholic church, toppled down and trapled upon sacred iages of Jesus Christ, the Blessed Virgin Mary and the saints. They burned down the church before they left. They set up a check-point at a bridge that would have been an escape route for the frightened civilians, and set their sights on Christians who were leeing the carnage. At one point, there was a group of 8 en who tried to pass through the check-point. The terrorists asked the one by one: Are you Christian? When the en said Yes, they were gunned down and thrown on a grassy side of the road. The words of Jesus in tod s Gospel are very challenging. He said, Do not fear those who deprive the body of life but cannot destroy the soul. He calls us to be brave and be ready to stand up for hi, and not be afraid of anything. Just like Jereiah in the First Reading when he was being persecuted even by his own friends he chose to trust in the saving power of God, and said, The Lord is with e, like a ighty chapion. Those victis of violence in the Philippines entioned above and those who suffered the sae fate in the past for being Christians becae silent artyrs as they stood up for their faith in God. For ost of us, the challenge is how to stand up in front of an increasing hostility to the Gospel that has becoe prevalent in our society tod. In the past, situations and actions that were universally recognized as orally wrong are now considered acceptable and anybody who raises an objection and speaks about orality based on Gospel truths are attacked and called intolerant. But Jesus told us not to be afraid, and instead told us who we should fear: the one who can destroy both body and soul in Gehenna. No, God does not desire to use His power to destroy us; but rather he wants to lead us and to protect us with his fatherly love. We should not fear God s love, but we ust fear our own tendency to turn aw fro Hi by our wrong choices which will lead to our own destruction. God desires our salvation. We only have to s yes to Hi even if we have to s no to ourselves. GOD LOVES YOU ALL VERY DEARLY. In Christ, FR. ROMY Notes: Deacon Charlie Voss has taken a edical leave fro active inistry. He has taken residence in Virginia while undergoing treatent for prostate cancer. According to the Of ice of the Diaconate, he is of icially no longer assigned here at Resurrection Parish. Please continue to pr for his recovery. This Sund (June 25), we shall be having a going-aw reception for Fr. Jose Cornelia whose assignent with us will end on June 30. Please join us at 11:00 AM in Philip Hall to thank Fr. Jose and to wish hi the best on his new assignent. Next weekend, we shall welcoe our new Parochial Vicar, Fr. Wilfred Joseph Yinah, V.C. He is a priest belonging to a counity called Via Christi (The W of Christ) fro Nigeria. As one counity, let us pr for God s continued blessing and guidance through our priests.

CDA The good news tod is that we have reached 108.6 % of our parish goal of $60,000. Currently 224 failies have pledged 65,172 toward the diocesan appeal. Thank you for your contributions. The usic inistry of Resurrection will once again be hosting a suer usic skills class. This year, we are going back to basics! So if you have never read usic but want to learn about it, or if you want a refresher course on very basic usic notation, please join us! This class will be based on the book: H R M : F M N M E By Roger Evans It is under $10 on Aazon and will serve as a nice reference for you after the suer, and we will be using it extensively throughout the sessions. The dates of the class will be: June 29, July 6, July 20, Aug. 3, Aug. 17, Aug. 31, fro 7 to 9, in Shepherd s Den. Please RSVP to Penni Scott at the parish of ice, or you can stop by the usic area after Mass to RSVP "But who do you s that I a?" What if Jesus asked this question tod? How would people respond? Soe ight focus on his role in history, sing, "You are the founder of the Christian religion." Others ight describe his work: "You are a teacher, a healer, a spiritual guide." Perhaps there are soe who would identify hi by his character, suggesting that he is a loving, generous, copassionate, and forgiving role odel. But surely soe would answer in the sae spirit as Peter in tod's reading, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." This is a profound stateent of faith. To call Jesus "the Christ" is to profess that he is the Messiah, the long awaited savior of God's people. To call hi the Son of God is to profess that he is not only a iracle-working an, he is also divine. Aong the disciples being questioned, Peter was the one who responded with this real insight into Jesus' identity. "Flesh and blood has not revealed this to you," Jesus replied to Peter, "but y heavenly Father." In other words, recognizing Jesus as our savior and our God isn't soething we igure out on our own. It's a spiritual insight that coes through faith. Jesus did any aazing things while he walked the earth. He gave us a powerful exaple of love and forgiveness and he offered us teachings that help direct our lives. But we are called to see even ore than these historical facts; as Christians we are called to recognize hi as the Christ. Through faith, we know who Jesus really is: our God and our Savior. Thus, we are called to give hi ore than our respect and adiration as a rearkable an. We are called to give hi our full allegiance and to worship hi as the one true God. There are two ws of spreading light: to be the candle or the irror that re lects it. Edith Joseph Navarro, Raquel Horne, Ji & Judy Porter, Ignacio Villaverde, Mary Douglas, Marvin B., J.
