PARISH LENTEN SERVICE PROJECT MAISON DES AMIS During the season of Lent, we are called to PRAYER, FASTING, and ALMSGIVING. This year in an effort to truly live out God s call of service to the poor and needy, our parish has adopted for our Lenten project, Maison des Amis, House of Friends. Maison des Amis is a non-profit organization that operates a state-licensed group home for people with mental illness. Without Maison des Amis, the clients served there would be homeless, roaming the streets, and sleeping in doorways. The doors of Maison des Amis were opened to the Baton Rouge community on Thanksgiving Day in 1986. People with chronic mental illness become increasingly estranged and often have no place to live. Maison des Amis takes care of up to 46 adults whose mental illness has left them homeless in the Baton Rouge region. Maison des Amis is located on Convention Street and deeply appreciates the generosity of those who donate to their cause. Sickness should not condemn anyone to the streets. In what has become an organized and coordinated effort by our parishioners to reach out to the clients of Maison des Amis, there are many opportunities for service, including the cooking and serving of a meal, which can be coordinated. There are other needs such as painting and work day activities to participate in. You are kindly asked to make your donation by using the special envelopes for Maison des Amis located in Church. Items which you may bring to the Church Office at your convenience include travel size toiletries, such as: Soap Shampoo Mouthwash Deodorant Toothpaste Brand new EXTRA LONG Twin Bed Blankets Crochet Supplies Brand new EXTRA LONG Twin Bed Sheets Maison des Amis Home is desperately in need of new furniture and if you are so disposed to donating any item such as a new chair or a new small chest of drawers to be used next to the residents beds, you may call and speak to Deanie Smith at (225) 928-6207. I cannot tell you enough how anything we do for this project will be greatly appreciated by the neediest of the needy in Baton Rouge. Once again, this is an area where our Church Family at Mercy can make an incredible difference. I would want everyone to know that whatever we do for this cause, big or small, will truly be in the Lenten spirit of ALMSGIVING. It is what Jesus would want us to do for the very neediest. I was hungry, I was homeless, I was ill, I was forgotten and you came to me. 8 OUR LADY OF MERCY PARISH
