THE TRANSFIGURATION OF OUR LORD Transfigured for Our Transformation March 2 & 3, 2019 AS WE GATHER At the end of Moses long and storied life, the Scriptures say, His eye was undimmed, and his vigor unabated (Deuteronomy 34:7). Nevertheless, the day came for even Moses to lay down and let go of his life. Perched atop Mount Nebo, Moses may have reflected on the highpoints of his 120 years and the legacy he was leaving behind. God had other matters for Moses attention: The Promised Land, where a greater prophet, God s own beloved Son, Jesus, would be born and live and do good, laying down His life so that all people might live through Him. At the edge of Moses life and death, God invited Moses to dwell not on the past, but to trust God s promises for the future. Could Moses have known then that he would later speak with the Son of God atop the mountain on the day of Jesus transfiguration? Who knows what wonderful things are in store for people like us who trust God s promises as Moses did? 10:30 PRE-SERVICE BELLS Come Now is the Time to Worship WELCOME MINISTRY MOMENT Panther Palooza HANDSHAKES & HUGS Praise the Lord, all nations! Extol him, all peoples! For great is his steadfast love toward us, and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever. Praise the Lord! (Psalm 117, ESV) PREPARATION OPENING HYMN #487 Come, You Faithful, Raise the Strain Come, you faithful, raise the strain Of triumphant gladness! God has brought His Israel Into joy from sadness, Loosed from Pharaoh s bitter yoke Jacob s sons and daughters, Led them with un-moistened foot Through the Red Sea waters. Tis the spring of souls today: Christ has burst His prison And from three days sleep in death As a sun has risen; All the winter of our sins, Long and dark, is flying 1 From His light, to whom is giv n Laud and praise undying. Now the queen of seasons, bright With the day of splendor, With the royal feast of feasts Comes its joy to render; Comes to gladden faithful hearts Which with true affection Welcome in unwearied strain Jesus resurrection! For today among His own Christ appeared, bestowing His deep peace, which evermore Passes human knowing. Neither could the gates of death Nor the tomb s dark portal Nor the watchers nor the seal Hold Him as a mortal. Alleluia! Now we cry To our King immortal, Who, triumphant, burst the bars Of the tomb s dark portal. Come, you faithful, raise the strain Of triumphant gladness! God has brought His Israel Into joy from sadness! INVOCATION & OPENING SENTENCES Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Pastor: Exalt the LORD our God; worship at His footstool! People: Holy is He! Pastor: The LORD is great in Zion; People: He is exalted over all the peoples. Pastor: Let them praise your great and awesome name! People: Holy is He! Pastor: Exalt the LORD our God, and worship at His holy mountain; People: for the LORD our God is holy! CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION Pastor: Loving God, you desire a relationship with all people that is grounded in your love, nurtured by truthfulness, and experienced as freedom living under your gracious reign. People: We admit that we are by nature turned away from your love, we are at home in dishonesty, and we are enslaved by ways of sin and death. Because of Jesus life, death, and resurrection for us, we ask that you continue to forgive us, transform us, and heal us according to your steadfast love, which endures forever. 2

Pastor: God is gracious and merciful and has come in the person of Jesus giving His life to demonstrate how much He loves you and all people. Therefore, as a called and ordained servant of Jesus, and by His authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. HYMN OF PRAISE Page 187 Glory be to God on high: and on earth peace, goodwill toward men. We praise Thee, we bless Thee, we worship Thee, we glorify Thee, we give thanks to Thee, for Thy great glory. O Lord God, heav nly King, God the Father Almighty. O Lord, the only begotten Son, Jesus Christ; O Lord, God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sin of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For Thou only art holy; Thou only art the Lord. Thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen. SALUTATION & PRAYER OF THE DAY Pastor: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Pastor: Let us pray. O God, in the glorious transfiguration of your beloved Son you confirmed the mysteries of the faith by the testimony of Moses and Elijah. In the voice that came from the bright cloud you wonderfully foreshowed our adoption by grace. Mercifully make us co-heirs with the King in His glory and bring us to the fullness of our inheritance in heaven; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. WORD OLD TESTAMENT READING Deuteronomy 34:1 12 (The death of Moses) Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is opposite Jericho. And the LORD showed him all the land, Gilead as far as Dan, all Naphtali, the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the western sea, the Negeb, and the Plain, that is, the Valley of Jericho the city of palm trees, as far as Zoar. And the LORD said to him, This is the land of which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, I will give it to your offspring. I have let you see it with your eyes, but you shall not go over there. So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the LORD, and he buried him in the valley in the land of Moab opposite Beth-peor; but no one knows the place of his burial to this day. Moses was 120 years old when he died. His eye was undimmed, and his vigor unabated. And the people of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days. Then the days of weeping and mourning for Moses were ended. And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him. So the people of Israel obeyed him and did as the LORD had commanded Moses. And there has not arisen a prophet since in Israel like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face, none like him for all the signs and the wonders that the LORD sent him to do in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh and to all his servants and to all his land, and for all the mighty power and all the great deeds of terror that Moses did in the sight of all Israel. Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. EPISTLE Hebrews 3:1 6 (Jesus, the Son, is worthy of more glory than Moses.) Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God's house. For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself. (For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.) Now Moses was faithful in all God's house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, but Christ is faithful over God's house as a son. And we are his house, if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope. Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. 5:00 & 8:00 ANTHEM This is My Beloved Son Pepper Choplin 10:30 ANTHEM Come Let Us Sing Sleeth Pastor: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the ninth chapter. People: Glory to you, O Lord. 4

HOLY GOSPEL Luke 9:28 36 (The transfiguration of Jesus) Now about eight days after these sayings he took with him Peter and John and James and went up on the mountain to pray. And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was altered, and his clothing became dazzling white. And behold, two men were talking with him, Moses and Elijah, who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. Now Peter and those who were with him were heavy with sleep, but when they became fully awake they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. And as the men were parting from him, Peter said to Jesus, Master, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah not knowing what he said. As he was saying these things, a cloud came and overshadowed them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my Son, my Chosen One; listen to him! And when the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and told no one in those days anything of what they had seen. Pastor: This is the Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to you, O Christ. NICENE CREED I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. OFFERING As your offering is collected, please sign our attendance book located at the end of the pew. If you are a visitor, please leave your address and phone. After you are finished, please pass the book along to others in your pew, and return the book to the center aisle. You may check the register to see the names of those to greet after the service. 10:30 BELLS DURING OFFERING Praise to the Lord PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH Pastor: Let us pray for the whole church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. Almighty God, as your Son was transfigured before his disciples, grant us to see his glory, worship him in spirit and truth, and follow him all our days. People: Grant us to grow in faith, be renewed in Christian life, and walk with Christ day by day. Pastor: Lord of the church, we pray for peace in the world, for the strengthening of the holy Christian church, and for the unity of the Church in doctrine and in life. 7 People: Bless this holy house, that those who enter here may do so in faith, reverence and the right fear of you, our God. Pastor: Lord of the nations, we pray for our country, the president and all those in public office; for this city and her leaders, and for all who seek to serve and protect our community. People: Bless also your faithful children to live as good citizens and to love their neighbors as they love themselves. Pastor: Lord of love, we pray for the holy Christian church on earth, for all pastors and missionaries, teachers and church workers, especially our Together in Mission partners, Pastor Chuck Ferry and family and Rachel Meyer. People: Bless our pastors and those who serve us in the Lord s name. Give to them the support and encouragement they need and lead them to preach and teach the truth of your Word. Pastor: Lord of all, we pray for travelers, that they may be kept safe; for those who suffer for the sake of Christ; for those who defend our nation, and those who labor for lawful order. People: Be their refuge and strength in times of difficulty and grant them all joy and peace through faith in Christ. Pastor: For those who suffer from illnesses of body or mind; for the healing grace of body and blood, that those who suffer may know God s strength, comfort and peace in their afflictions especially Russell, Cliff, Susan, Marlene, Nancy, Grant, Henry, LuEva, Nancy, Marge, Dolores, Dick, Herb, Cindy, Arlene, Shirley, Russ, Gladys, John, Arlene, Jack, Shirley, Jonathan and Sarah. People: In your great mercy, provide for all according to their need, grant them healing and restoration in due time, and fill them with hope in Christ. Pastor: Father in heaven, give us ears that hearken to your voice speaking through your Word. Bless us with faith in our hearts to receive Christ s blessed Sacrament in repentance for forgiveness of sin and renewal of life. People: Give us a sense of holy awe at the glory of Christ present in and given to us in the Means of Grace. 8

Pastor: Father of us all, bless the fellowship of your people gathered around your Word and table of our Lord. Grant that the lonely may find companionship in the community of faith, and the homebound to be kept in prayer and sustained through the gracious visitation of God s people and their pastor. People: Open our eyes to see the opportunities to serve the least among us. Pastor: Lord, your power is beyond compare and your glory beyond understanding. Open our hearts to know you through the glory of your Son, whose saving will and purpose have rescued us from sin and death and made us your own people by Baptism and faith. For to you, O Lord, belongs all honor and glory, worship and praise, blessed and eternal Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and to the end of the ages. THE LORD S PRAYER SACRAMENT PREFACE Pastor: The Lord be with you. People: And with thy spirit. Pastor: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them up unto the Lord. DISTRIBUTION Those guests who desire to commune who are members of another LCMS congregation may do so; if you are coming from another church background, please see the pastor or an elder first. Refrain: HYMN #641 You Satisfy the Hungry Heart Soloist Refrain & verses 1 & 2 Congregation joins refrain & verses 3-5 You satisfy the hungry heart With gift of finest wheat. Come give to us, O saving Lord, The bread of life to eat. As when the shepherd calls his sheep, They know and heed his voice; so when you call your fam ly, Lord, We follow and rejoice. With joyful lips we sing to you Our praise and gratitude That you should count us worthy, Lord, To share this heav nly food. Is not the cup we bless and share The blood of Christ outpoured? Do not one cup, one loaf, declare Our oneness in the Lord? The myst ry of your presence, Lord, No mortal tongue can tell: Whom all the world cannot contain Comes in our hearts to dwell. You give yourself to us, O Lord; Then selfless let us be, To serve each other in your name in truth and charity. 9 10

HYMN #644 The Church s One Foundation The Church s one foundation Is Jesus Christ, her Lord; She is His new creation By water and the Word. From heav n He came and sought her To be His holy bride; With His own blood He bought her, And for her life He died. Elect from every nation, Yet one o er all the earth; Her charter of salvation: One Lord, one faith, one birth. One holy name she blesses, Partakes one holy food, And to one hope she presses With every grace endued. Though with a scornful wonder The world sees her oppressed, By schisms rent asunder, By heresies distressed, Yet saints their watch are keeping; Their cry goes up, How long? And soon the night of weeping Shall be the morn of song. Through toil and tribulation And tumult of her war She waits the consummation Of peace forevermore Till with the vision glorious Her longing eyes are blest, And the great Church victorious Shall be the Church at rest. Yet she on earth has union With God, the Three in One, And mystic sweet communion With those whose rest is won. O blessed heav nly chorus! Lord, save us by Your grace That we, like saints before us, May see You face to face. HYMN #631 Here, O My Lord, I See Thee Face to Face Here, O my Lord, I see Thee face to face; Here would I touch and handle things unseen; Here grasp with firmer hand the eternal grace, And all my weariness upon Thee lean. Here would I feed upon the bread of God, Here drink with Thee the royal wine of heav n; Here would I lay aside each earthly load, Here taste afresh the calm of sin forgiv n. This is the hour of banquet and of song; This is the heav nly table spread for me; Here let me feast and, feasting, still prolong 11 The brief bright hour of fellowship with Thee. COMMON DISMISSAL I have no help but Thine; nor do I need Another arm but Thine to lean upon. It is enough, my Lord, enough indeed; My strength is in Thy might, Thy might alone. Mine is the sin, but Thine the righteousness; Mine is the guilt, but Thine the cleansing blood; Here is my robe, my refuge, and my peace: The blood, Thy righteousness, O Lord, my God. Too soon we rise; the vessels disappear; The feast, though not the love, is past and gone; The bread and wine remove, but Thou art here; Nearer than ever; still my shield and sun. Feast after feast thus comes and passes by, Yet, passing, points to that glad feast above, Giving sweet foretaste of the festal joy, The Lamb s great marriage feast of bliss and love. POST-COMMUNION THANKSGIVING Pastor: Let us pray. Gracious God, our heavenly Father, you have given us a foretaste of the feast to come in the Holy Supper of your Son's body and blood. Keep us firm in the true faith throughout our days of pilgrimage that, on the day of His coming, we may, together with all your saints, celebrate the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom which has no end; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. BENEDICAMUS & BENEDICTION Pastor: Let us bless the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. Pastor: 12 The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace.
