On November 9th, as a school community we remember, commemorate and pray for those who gave their lives so we all could live in peace and freedom the Remembrance Day assembly is planned for 10:30 a.m. Students are encouraged to bring a loonie as a small donation towards a poppy. This month we celebrate the virtue of Justice which is one of the building blocks in developing moral intelligence in young people. This theme of Justice ties in with the Catholic Graduate Expectation of Responsible Citizen - one who gives witness to Catholic social teaching by promoting peace, justice and the sacredness of human life. On November 20th you will receive your child s Progress Report. Parent-teacher interviews are scheduled to take place on Thursday, November 22nd and Friday, November 23rd. The parent-teacher meeting is an opportunity for you and your child s teacher to discuss your daughter/son s progress to date and set goals. We are looking forward to another great month ahead! Warmest regards, C. Mills Principal Prayer for Remembrance Day Let us pray for all who suffer as a result of conflict, and ask that God may give us peace: for the men and women who have died in the violence of war, each one remembered by and known to God; may God give peace. For peacemakers and peacekeepers, who seek to keep this world secure and free; asking for gifts of wisdom and resolve in the search for reconciliation and peace; may God give peace. O God of truth and justice, as we honour the past, may we put our faith in your future; for you are the source of life and hope, now and for ever. Amen.

Integration of our Catholic Faith 2 Faith Activities NOVEMBER CATHOLIC VIRTUE: JUSTICE I will treat others in a just, equitable and unbiased manner. I will play by the rules, take turns and share. I will be respectful of others. 2018 CHRISTMAS OUTREACH Every year, the staff at St. Edward asks that any appreciation you would like to show them at Christmas be in the form of a donation of gift cards purchased from stores such as Walmart and No Frills. These are then donated to The St. Vincent de Paul Society and Dismas. When making such a donation, parents are invited to cut out the angel tree decoration that will be provided and write on it their family name. The angels will be hung on our Christmas tree in the foyer. Please look out for the letter, as gift cards will have to be passed on to St. Patrick s church in early December. Thank you. FAITH ACTIVITIES AT ST. EDWARD Preparation for the sacraments is a joint mission between the home, church and school. Throughout the year, parents will receive information from St. Patrick s church regarding preparations for the Blessed Sacraments. Our grade 2 Reconciliation will be held at St. Patrick s church December 8th at 11:00 a.m. If you have any questions regarding sacramental preparation, it is important that you contact the Parish at (905) 294-5955. Advent Mass takes place on December 7th at 10:30 a.m. All are welcome to attend! TREATY RECOGNITION WEEK-NOVEMBER 5-11 The York Catholic District School Board celebrates Treaty Recognition Week, November 5-11, 2018. The YCDSB recognizes Treaty Week as part of our ongoing journey of healing and reconciliation. As we continue this journey together, we gratefully acknowledge that our York Catholic schools rest on traditional territory of the Chippewas of Georgina Island and The Mississaugas of the Credit First Nations. During Treaty Recognition Week, we acknowledge the many Treaties that the Canadian Government signed with the First Peoples of this land. These Treaties compel all people in Canada, all of us, to be Treaty people. Each of us has an obligation to ensure that the Treaties be honoured. We celebrate the contributions of Indigenous peoples to the development of Canada. Indigenous peoples were the first stewards of the land, waters and resources. Indigenous peoples offered assistance to the first European travelers to this region, and shared knowledge for survival in what was, at times, a harsh climate. We journey in relationship with Indigenous People of this land; a relationship among neighbours based on honour and deep respect. http://www.aadnc-aandc.gc.ca REMEMBRANCE DAY Ms. Fraser and Mme Liu grade 7 students have been preparing a special presentation for us on Remembrance Day. Please join us for our Remembrance Day gathering on November 9th at 10:30 a.m.

BULLYING PREVENTION WEEK: NOVEMBER 19-23 Bullying Prevention Week begins on Monday November 19th. This is a week set aside by the Ministry of Education. At St. Edward, Bullying Prevention is a year-round focus. Our goal is to create and sustain a safe and positive school climate. To recognize this week, we had an early special presentation by Coby Elimelech, a motivational speaker and magician, on October 25th for the entire school body. He amazed students and staff alike with his magic show and inspired everyone by sharing his personal story of bullying and the important lessons and messages he learned. On November 5th, Magician Coby is providing a parent only evening sharing important information on all forms of bullying with parents. Please see flyer attached to the newsletter for more information. CROSS COUNTRY Congratulations to our Cross Country team! It placed 3rd at the area finals on October 3rd. 8 November 2018 Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s), Active Transportation and Mental Health Did you know that Active Transportation can strengthen child and youth mental health, which helps children and youth perform better academically, form social relationships, promote positive emotional feelings that increase self-worth and overall make healthier lifestyle choices? Children s Mental Health Ontario reports that as many as 1 in 5 children and youth in Ontario will experience some form of mental health problem and that 70% of mental health problems start during childhood or the teenage years (CMH, 2018). Why Is Strong Mental Health Important for Children? Strong mental health allows kids and youth to: Think more clearly, Develop socially and emotionally, and Learn new skills more effectively. (MHA, 2018) It also helps to: Build confidence, Increase self-esteem, and Provide a positive mental outlook on life overall. (MHA, 2018) All of these benefits have significant positive impacts on children as they grow and enter different phases of life. A child with strong mental health is a child more likely to succeed and deal with challenges in all aspects of life, including transitions into high school, college/university and work or starting their own family one day. Use Active School Travel To Stay Mentally Fit! Active School Travel (AST) is an easy way for parents/guardians to strengthen the mental health of children and youth. Simply walking and/or wheeling to and from school leads to increased social connectedness, which can boost confidence and self-esteem and encourage positive behaviour and skills. In adults, it also helps manage stress and promotes wellness. Active School Travel is simple and can easily be added into your daily routine!
