Prayer Chain We at St.Andrew s are known as friendly people. We are brothers and sisters in Christ. As such, we care for each other and one very special way of doing this is to pray for each other. There are times in all our lives when our needs seem huge or overwhelming or desperate. This is when prayer is a blessing to both those of us who pray and especially to the one in need. God is our help and strength but we do have to ask! Philippians 4:6 says Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. We then watch and see His work in and through us and give Him the praise. Our Prayer Chain is always available for whatever need. Requests go to our team through email so quickly distributed! Many come through our Pastors, Duncan and Monica, but requests can also be phoned or emailed to Pat Boyes or myself. Please consider joining this ministry and bring us closer together as loving, caring people of God. Patricia Leach newsletter.standrews.scarborough@gmail.com Page 3

200 TH ANNIVERSARY ST. ANDREW S PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, SCARBOROUGH, ONTARIO As a special project to celebrate the 200 th year, the Mission & Outreach Committee suggested to the congregation that they contribute to the fund to provide running water in the homes of the First Nations Village of Pikangikum, a remote Northern Ontario, community. The congregation embraced this project wholeheartedly and donated $37,600. A cheque was presented in June 2018. What would it be like not to be able to wash children or their clothes! To have to use an outhouse in sub-zero temperatures and to have to melt snow, cut the ice from the river to obtain water unclean water! Families with the greatest need are chosen by the Village Elders to have the infrastructure installed in their homes to provide clean running water. Where this has taken place, the incidence of skin diseases has decreased because of the improved cleanliness resulting in increased attendance at school. The added self-respect is a factor in preventing youth suicide. Training has taken place to provide jobs as youth are able to do much of the installation. Youth are also being trained to work in the new sawmill as they now have permission to cut down the trees in the Pikangikum forest. They are able to use their own wood to build village houses. We're excited to finally launch "Fearless Conversations," St. Andrew's new young adult ministry! We invite anyone between the ages of 18-30 to join us after the service on the 1st and 3rd week of the month starting on January 6, 2019, where we ll share a meal and have-- you guessed it--fearless conversations. Don't worry, we'll start slow, and it's the more the merrier, so feel free to bring a friend. For more information (or to start the conversation early) contact Cricket at kirushanthan.krish@gmail.com The Pikangikum Working Group is a non-profit charitable organization of skilled, people who wish to use their expertise to improve and help this First Nations Village and who have won the respect of the Village Elders. newsletter.standrews.scarborough@gmail.com Page 5

About the Presbyterian Church in Canada taken from (presbyterian.ca/about/more) A bit of our history... Presbyterians in Canada The roots of The Presbyterian Church in Canada are Scottish (our mother Church was the Church of Scotland which is Presbyterian), but our Canadian heritage includes the work and witness of French Huguenots (Protestant) settlers who came to Canada in the 1600s. Of course, many people have come, and continue to come into our denomination from other branches of the Christian Church. Many Presbyterians in Canada have their churches named after Reformers, particularly John Calvin (a Frenchman) and John Knox (a Scot who was influenced by Calvin s teachings). John Calvin (1509-1564) has often been called the father of Presbyterianism. Calvin lived in Geneva, Switzerland. From there, Presbyterianism spread through Europe. Calvin, like other reformers, worked hard to develop a church where everyone, not just the clergy, shared responsibilities. Schools were established to provide education for both clergy and laity. John Knox (1515-1572), after studying with Calvin in Geneva, returned to his native Scotland to establish Presbyterianism. It soon spread to northern Ireland, the United States and Canada. In 1875 several groups of Presbyterians formed a union and called themselves The Presbyterian Church. Our Church has been independent since then. Today, The Presbyterian Church in Canada has about 1,000 congregations with members coming from many national and racial backgrounds. For example there are now 20 Korean congregations. Within our denomination there are many different languages and styles of worship. There are congregations that worship in English, French, Korean, Chinese, Taiwanese, Hungarian, Spanish and Portuguese. In the 1990s The Presbyterian Church in Canada has welcomed new Korean and Ghanaian congregations. newsletter.standrews.scarborough@gmail.com Page 7
