Opportunity Profile for CAMPUS PASTOR WORNALL CAMPUS Colonial Presbyterian Church Wornall Campus 9500 Wornall, Kansas City, Mo. 64114 www.colonialkc.org 816.942.3272

POSITION OVERVIEW The Campus Pastor is a role that requires many of the same gifts and tendencies of Lead Pastors. The Campus Pastor is responsible for the overall leadership and spiritual growth of attendees, members, and staff at the Wornall campus. This includes leading and shepherding the congregation, aligning to, internalizing and carrying the vision to the campus, building teams and developing leaders who carry out ministry strategies, overseeing the development of healthy disciples and creating a high functioning campus that makes a positive difference in our community. Please read the job description closely and prayerfully consider if this fits your gifting and motivation. We are looking for a passionate partner in ministry who will work hard, trust God, not neglect their family, and enjoy the adventure of Kingdom service at Colonial! Additional resources including the job description, Staff Core Values, EPC Essentials, Membership Covenant, and our leadership diagram can be found at www.colonialkc.org/pastorsearch. WHO WE ARE OUR GUIDING CONVICTIONS OUR MISSION: OUR PRIORITIES: To help people become passionate selfless followers of Christ Encounter God, Grow with Others, Impact People OUR LEADERSHIP We are an elder-led church (the word Presbyterian comes from the Greek word presbyteros which means elder ). The responsibility for governance is shared among 15 ruling elders (lay leaders) and 5 teaching elders (pastors) who are referred to as the Session. Day to day management is entrusted to the Executive Leadership Team, Management Team, and ultimately to the entire staff (see attachments for more detail). Because we are a multi-site church, the primary vision and direction of the congregation is articulated and led by the Lead Pastor as agreed upon by the Session. However, each campus has a Campus Council composed of elders, the chair of deacons, and the Campus Pastor. The Campus Councils help provide direction and oversight to the local congregations as they seek to reach and disciple their respective communities.

OUR THEOLOGY Colonial is delighted to be associated with the Evangelical Presbyterian Church (EPC) that holds to this conviction regarding theology: In the Essentials--Unity; In the Non- Essentials--Liberty; In All Things Charity. That quote fits us very well. Colonial is large enough to house a diversity of opinions with regard to non-essential matters, such as charismatic gifts or eschatology. We are Reformed, but those maintaining a wide variety of other theological positions feel completely comfortable as a part of our fellowship. That being said, we are fully untied around the EPC s Essentials of the Faith. The essentials are non-negotiable. ESSENTIALS OF OUR FAITH All Scripture is self-attesting and being Truth, requires our unreserved submission in all areas of life. The infallible Word of God, the sixty-six books of the Old and New Testaments, is a complete and unified witness to God s redemptive acts culminating in the incarnation of the Living Word, the Lord Jesus Christ. The Bible, uniquely and fully inspired by the Holy Spirit, is the supreme and final authority on all matters on which it speaks. On this sure foundation, we affirm these additional essentials of our faith. 1. We believe in one God, the sovereign Creator and Sustainer of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. To Him be all honor, glory and praise forever! 2. Jesus Christ, the living Word, became flesh through His miraculous conception by the Holy Spirit and His virgin birth. He who is true God became true man united in one Person forever. He died on the cross as a sacrifice for our sins according to the Scriptures. On the third day He arose bodily from the dead, ascended into heaven where, at the right hand of the Majesty on High, He now is our High Priest and Mediator. 3. The Holy Spirit has come to glorify Christ and to apply the saving work of Christ to our hearts. He convicts us of sin and draws us to the Savior, indwelling our hearts. He gives new life to us, empowers and imparts gifts to us for service. He instructs and guides us into all truth, and seals us for the day of redemption. 4. Being estranged from God and condemned by our sinfulness, our salvation is wholly dependent upon the work of God s free grace. God credits His righteousness to those who put their faith in Christ alone for their salvation, and thereby justifies them in His sight. Only such as are born of the Holy Spirit and receive Jesus Christ become children of God and heirs of eternal life. 5. The true Church is composed of all persons who through saving faith in Jesus Christ and the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit are united together in the body of Christ. The Church finds her visible, yet imperfect, expression in local congregations where the Word of God is preached in its purity and the sacraments are administered in their integrity, where scriptural discipline is practiced, and where loving fellowship is maintained. For her perfecting she awaits the return of her Lord.

6. Jesus Christ will come again to the earth personally, visibly, and bodily to judge the living and the dead, and to consummate history and the eternal plan of God. Even so, come, Lord Jesus. (Rev. 22:20) 7. The Lord Jesus Christ commands all believers to proclaim the gospel throughout the world and to make disciples of all nations. Obedience to the Great Commission requires total commitment to Him who loved us and gave Himself for us. He calls us to a life of self-denying love and service. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. (Eph. 2:10) Those who serve on staff and those who become members at Colonial are asked to yield to these Essentials of the Faith without reservation. If those who serve on staff or those who are part of the membership have a change of heart in regards to the Essentials, they are expected to let an Elder know so that we might find a path forward with truth and grace. The EPC also looks to the Westminster Confession of Faith and its Standards as our system of doctrine. Both ministers and members of the EPC are permitted to hold exceptions regarding the details of Westminster, but they should be able to demonstrate in scripture where and why they disagree. The Old and New Testaments will always serve as our first and final authority in all theological matters. OUR HISTORY Colonial s history is a God-story. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, Colonial has made disciples and championed the Gospel in the Kansas City Metro for over 60 years. Colonial's story began in the late 1940 s as members of South Presbyterian Church discerned a call from God to extend their ministry into what was then the growing suburban development in southern Kansas City. After outgrowing their space in a local elementary school, the group took on the name of Colonial and built a small chapel on the corner of Wornall and Bannister in 1953. Under the leadership of Pastor Norman Krebbs, Colonial quickly grew to 600 members which led to further expansion of the facility. In 1964 Colonial called Dr. Ted Nissen as senior pastor. When Pastor Ted s passion for the Gospel and young people intersected with the Jesus Movement in the late 60 s and 70 s, Colonial experienced incredible growth, particularly in the youth ministry. The new growth inevitably led to unforeseen space challenges, even after a fire in 1981 led to the construction of our current 1100 seat sanctuary! Because our campus was becoming landlocked and crowded, Pastor Ted began to look south in the early 90's with the thought of moving Colonial to the new frontier of southern Johnson County. After Colonial purchased land in 1996, it became clear to the leadership that God was not

calling Colonial to move south, but rather to create a second campus while remaining present and vital in South Kansas City. After several years of the start-group meeting in a local school, and after a great amount of prayer and sacrificial giving, the Quivira campus opened its doors in 2002, making Colonial one of the first multi-site churches in the United States. Just months before the Quivira site opened, Pastor Ted retired and shortly after went to be with the Lord. Pastor Doug Rumford then served Colonial as Senior Pastor with distinction from 2001-2006. When Pastor Doug responded to a call in California, Colonial called Pastor Jim West to serve as Lead Pastor in March of 2008. By 2010, the Elders discerned that the time had come to leave the PC(USA), and after a prayerful process, Colonial entered the EPC in August of 2010. Colonial also set out eliminate close to 10 million in debt and obligations associated with the Quivira Campus in November of 2011. Thanks to the goodness of God, we became debt-free on Dec. 30 th, 2016! New challenges and new opportunities are once again before Colonial. After 60 years, the Wornall Campus is now located on one of the most diverse corners in the entire metro. For several years now we have been learning what it means to be a multicultural congregation with a love for our neighbors who hail from various socioeconomic and racial backgrounds. Our Quivira Campus continues to see huge amounts of local development with large numbers of new residents moving into south Johnson County, so the fields are ripe for Kingdom harvest at both sites! OUR CAMPUSES We are two campuses united by a common mission, a common message, and a common board of Elders. Though there are many similarities between our campuses, each campus is challenged to contextualize ministry, programs, and outreach efforts based on the nature of their respective communities. Lead Pastor Jim West serves as the primary Teaching Pastor at both sites, though other pastors are provided opportunities to preach based on giftedness and effectiveness in the pulpit. WORNALL Our original campus is in a diverse community in South Kansas City not far from the state line. Though historically a destination church, we have made a concerted effort to serve and disciple our economically and racially diverse community We have always had a strong emphasis on the ministry to children and youth. Wornall s weekday Preschool is famous in the metro with an enrollment of over 200 students. Our children s ministry continues to grow

and currently exhibits the integration of urban and suburban that we hope to see throughout the congregation at Wornall. Our youth ministry boasts two incredible Youth Houses (one for Sr. High and one for Middle School), though our numbers are currently lower than in years past. That is likely attributable to the hard work of racial and socio-economic integration, which takes a longer break in period among the youth than among the children (and probably even longer among adults!). Our Youth Ministry is blessed to benefit from 18 Summer Staffers (college students) who reside and serve at Colonial for 10 weeks each summer. Several of those students are devoted to serve the Wornall campus ministries each summer. Wornall is home to many of our deeply beloved seniors who have helped shape and establish Colonial as a leading church in our city over the past 60 years. Because we have so many seniors who have long committed to serve Jesus at our Wornall location, our average age is a bit older than most growing churches. Our hope, therefore, is to see a new wave of younger families, singles, and youth discover the love of Jesus and the love of a multigenerational congregation at Wornall. We are confident that this kind of growth is happening and will happen with greater regularity when God s chosen servant occupies the Campus Pastor position. Thankfully we are NOT stuck in worship wars or backward ways. In fact, our senior saints are very missional minded (for the most part!) and quite willing to suffer changes in order to reach and disciple a younger and diverse population. We do not see our seniors as a liability they are an incredible asset, and they are worthy of honor. QUIVIRA Our second site is in a growing suburban community in southern Johnson County, KS Quivira shares the same emphasis on children and student ministry Though the community surrounding Quivira is more homogeneous, we recognize the opportunity to grow by reaching, serving, and discipling those in our neighborhoods including a plethora of international residents from many countries around the world who have taken high-level jobs and live just down the street from many of our members. WHAT IT WILL TAKE TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THIS POSITION The right candidate will: SEEK GODLY LIFE-CHANGE IN THEMSELVES AND OTHERS

Continually abide in Jesus and have his/her life shaped through prayer Live an authentic, contagious, and Jesus-like life that others will desire Make disciples - have a consuming drive to see others restored to a growing, dynamic relationship with God through Jesus BUILD RELATIONSHIPS AND EARN A HEALTHY FOLLOWERSHIP Connect well with others both individually and in large groups Be an inspiring leader for the ministry team and the congregation Empower others through invitation, challenge, and equipping LEAD COLLABORATIVELY AND DECISIVELY Develop relationships with elders, staff, and high level volunteer partners who can execute the ministry Have an ability to listen to ideas with discernment and to move the right ideas forward AS GOD LEADS, SET GOALS AND ACHIEVES RESULTS Take initiative Develop God-sized goals, design strategic plans to achieve them, and then communicate clearly so that members and staff can pull together toward a common vision Equip, empower, and monitor progress to ensure shared Kingdom success HOW DO I APPLY If you believe you might be a qualified and interested candidate for this position, please PRAY about that for a few days, and then submit your resume or Personal Information Form (PIF) to: Kristel Haynes Human Resources Director khaynes@colonialkc.org Candidates who qualify for further consideration will be notified and asked for additional content. All applicants will be notified as to our intent within 30 days from the date of their application.
